Title: Lip Service - A New Rolling Stones Podcast
Post by LipService on Sep 18th, 2025 at 4:14am
Hey everyone! Newbie here, and first-time poster, so please be gentle...!

I just wanted to get in amongst my fellow Stones fans to share something I’ve been working on, that I'm sure will be of interest.

I’ve just launched a brand new podcast all about The Rolling Stones, called Lip Service. It’s a deep-dive interview series that explores the Stones’ music, history, and legacy, told through conversations with the people who know them best. Across the first season you’ll hear from friends, managers, producers, collaborators, photographers, and even members of their current touring band; all people who’ve been right there in the middle of it all.

I'd love to give you some clues as to who's coming up, but I'm bound to secrecy! Just know that I've got great access, and I promise you'll appreciate all the guests! New episodes will drop every two weeks, each one digging into a different corner of the Stones’ world through the voices of those who’ve helped keep them rolling through the years.

Please allow me to introduce myself: I’ve been a music journalist for over 20 years, and was the founding editor of Clash Magazine. I’ve written for GQ, The Telegraph, Classic Rock, Radio Times, and more, but most importantly, I’ve been a Stones fan all my life. This show is a proper passion project: over six months in the making, it's something I’ve made for people like us, who can never get enough of the stories behind this incredible band.

You can find Lip Service on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, or anywhere you get your podcasts. (I'll share direct links once I'm allowed to on here!) We’re also on all the socials @StonesLipPod if you want to follow for updates and behind-the-scenes bits.

I really hope you’ll give it a listen, and if you enjoy it, please spread the word to any other Stones fans you know.

I’d love to hear what you think.  8-)

Episode 2 is now live, in which I speak with the lovely Bernard Fowler.

Check it out to hear the story of Bernard's path from New York's pioneering club scene to The Rolling Stones, including his surprising first meeting with Mick Jagger, and how he almost ruined his chances of touring with him!

We talk about him coming on board for Steel Wheels, how he navigated those turbulent waters, and how he found his place sharing a stage with them, making his voice not only fit in the equation but enhance it.

He also has a pretty strong argument for why the Stones' story is far from over...!  ;D

Hope you enjoy the listen!

Thank you! Appreciate it!

Season 1 is complete, but I'm now in production of season 2, so I'd love to hear from you guys with any suggestions of people from the Stones' world - then or now - you'd like for me to interview.

Do bear in mind that Mick and Keith are rather tricky to pin down...!  ;D

I think VooDoo would be a great interviewee...he has much radio experience too...
The RS fandom is a force to be reckoned with...
and a small tribute to founding member Gazza (RIP) would be very much appreciated.

The obvious one especially after Bernard Fowler and the number of years he sang with her and what he said about her in this interview is Lisa Fischer.

Perhaps a much tougher one for a whole host of reasons, but someone who would be fascinating is Marlon Richards. In many ways, he grew up with the band as it grew and changed, and he also has the cross Atlantic upbringing which is also part of the band's makeup. Things like his relationship with Mick and his perspective of Mick and Keith's relationship would be fascinating.

That's a great idea - maybe one for later down the line, as I'm really trying to establish the inner circle narrative first.

I've read up on Gazza on his tribute thread - a much valued and missed member of the community, no doubt.

Oh, Lisa is very much on the list already!

Marlon is a great shout too - though he definitely keeps to himself, so could be a challenge!

Thanks for the suggestions!

Tingly?! Thank you!!! I aim to please! ;D

Aaaaaannnnndddd.... Episode 4 is now live!

In it, I speak with Prince Stash, and not only do we discuss his entire life and career, but we focus, of course, on his close friendship with Brian Jones.

Stash talks about their first meeting in Paris, and how he felt he'd found a soul mate. He talks of Brian's inherent musicality, the distance - both figuratively and literally - between himself and the Stones, their adventurous sense of fashion, and of course their 1967 drug bust and its terrible aftershocks, which had a devastating effect on Brian.

We talk Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Keith, Anita, Sharon Tate, and everything and everyone in between.

I hope you enjoy it!

Well, it's rolled around again - time for another new episode!

This time, it's the turn of my good friend, Tony King: legendary promotions man, industry exec, tastemaker, fixer, éminence grise, and close friend of the Stones.

Tony first saw the Stones in late 1963, accompanied by Chrissie Shrimpton, while working in promotions under Tony Hall at Decca. By 1965, he'd been poached by Andrew Loog Oldham, was working at Immediate Records, and had made firm friends with the group - notably Charlie Watts, who was endeared to Tony after he saved his cat's life!

We talk about life in the Immediate office, how he'd often find Keith sleeping there, and how Tony was the unofficial joint roller of the place...! He shares his views on ALO and Brian Jones, and recalls memories of his time spent with the band in the '60s.

After some brief '70s recollections of Stones-related moments during his time working with John Lennon, we then jump forward to the 80s, when he reconnected with the band ahead of Steel Wheels, and Tony's tenure over 20 years and 6 global tours with them.

If you've read Tony's fantastic book, The Tastemaker, you'll know how great his stories are, and appreciate that due to our own close friendship, he's at ease with opening up and talking about his great, long career and relationship with the Stones.

Really hope you enjoy this one! Check it out here:

What a great interview, and what an interesting guy he is. It's interesting how he has a similar cadence and style of speaking as Mick and Keith even though he's not from Kent. In many ways, he can speak to the true essence of the band because he's one of the only people other than the band still around from the earliest days. He knows them in ways that no one really does. He also seems like a genuinely kind person.

🚨 **NEW EPISODE KLAXON**  ;D

Episode 6 of Lip Service dropped yesterday, and features my interview with the great Gered Mankowitz.

You all know his photos - they’re on the cover of Out Of Our Heads, December’s Children, Got Live If You Want It!, and Between The Buttons - and that they truly define the Stones’ visual identity at their glorious mid-60s peak.

Gered reveals the full stories behind those shoots, as we discuss his time with the band and the incredibly intimate sessions he enjoyed with them - on stage, in the studio, at home, and even on horseback while cowboying in Arizona…!

It’s a great chat, and I hope you enjoy listening to it!

Find it on Spotify  HERE.

Episode 7 is here.... and this is one for all you Charlie fans!

I caught up with Paul Sexton, who wrote the great book Charlie's Good Tonight - the only authorised biography of Mr Watts, written with full cooperation from the Stones, as well as Charlie's family and friends.

We talk about how the book came to be, and how he gained the trust of not just the Stones, but also Charlie's sister, who had never before spoken publicly about her brother. We talk about the journey Paul went on to get the book written - delving into Charlie's past, and pulling the curtain back on an intensely private man. We discuss his collecting habit, his fantastic style, his dabbling with heroin in the '80s, and how it was jazz music that saved him from self-destruction.

It's a lovely chat, and one that really celebrates Charlie in a warm and affectionate way. He'd no doubt be highly embarassed to have us talking about him...!

Hear it on Spotify HERE. Hope ya dig it!

A belated Happy New Year to you, friends!

After taking a well-deserved break over the holidays, season one of Lip Service resumed today with the latest episode - a little something different but definitely fascinating, that I hope you'll all enjoy.

This week, we meet Ray Winkler: CEO and Design Director of STUFISH Entertainment Architects, and the man responsible for shaping the Stones’ live stages for over 30 years.

Mentored by the late Mark Fisher, Ray began working with him in the mid-1990s at the company that would later evolve into STUFISH, before joining the Stones’ touring family for the first time on the ‘Bridges To Babylon’ tour. From that point on, he became central to translating the band’s identity into vast, immersive stage environments.

Beyond his longstanding work with the Stones, Ray has designed landmark shows and tours for Adele, Elton John, U2, ABBA, Beyonce, and many of the world’s biggest artists, designing how live music looks, feels, and moves at the highest level.

In our conversation, Ray takes us inside the creative and logistical pressures of building a Stones tour, from the sheer scale of the operation to the challenge of keeping things fresh for a band that has already done everything. He also shares what it’s like responding the band’s instincts, adapting designs as tours evolve, and how keeping up with technology, sustainability, and audience expectations is future-proofing his company.

Guess what? I'm back to let y'all know that episode 9 is here...!

This week, we meet Robert Greenfield, author of the cult classic STP: A Journey Through America With The Rolling Stones, one of the most vivid accounts of the Stones at their magnificent, hedonistic peak, and the first book ever written from inside a major rock tour.

Originally published in 1974, the book captured the Stones’ infamous 1972 US tour from its core, chronicling the songs, cities, excess, humour, and human fallout of life on the road at its most extreme. Rather than just mythologising the chaos, Robert’s method was to write it as he saw it; a quiet observer taking notes as the greatest rock and roll band in the world simply did their job.

The New Yorker had earned the group’s trust as the UK’s Associate Editor of Rolling Stones - his low-key presence and brilliant, expressive feature on their 1971 ‘Goodbye Britain’ tour led him to the south of France later that year, where he conducted what became Keith Richards' first truly in-depth interview at his villa, Nellcôte, during the making of ‘Exile On Main Street’.

In our conversation, Robert reflects on his formative years as a writer, the stark contrast between the Stones’ final days in Britain and their explosive return to America, and the extraordinary cast of characters that surrounded the band. He shares personal insights into Mick, Charlie, and Mick Taylor, the realities behind the infamous C*cksucker Blues documentary, and how a lifetime spent telling other people’s stories has shaped his own.

This is the sensational Stones of the ‘70s up close and unfiltered, told by someone who was there, paying attention, and writing it all down.

Episode 10 is here already, guys. I hope you're all enjoying it so far - a little light relief in amongst everything else that is going on in the world...!

This week on Lip Service, we meet Stephen Kijak, director of one of my favourite Stones films, Stones In Exile, which of course documents their self-imposed exile in the south of France and the making of ‘Exile On Main St’.

Stephen had the absolute pleasure of actually visiting the Stones' personal archive warehouse in London, sifting through dozens of reels of previously unseen film in preparation for the project. Can you imagine what he saw and heard?!

In this episode, he talks about that unique experience, his nerve-wracking first meetings with Mick and Keith, and how he earned their approval before interviewing the entire band - including Mick Taylor, Bobby Keys, Anita Pallenberg and all Nellcôte survivors - for their version of events.

He told me how he navigated the contrasting perspectives of his stars, how he almost missed premiering the film with Mick at Cannes, and how the whole experience went on to influence his later work as a cultural documentarian.

It's a cool insight into a fan-favourite film, and nicely continues the 'Exile' theme from the last episode with Bob Greenfield.

Find it on Spotify here. For all other platforms, find it here.

Enjoy!  :D

Hey y'all.

The penultimate episode of season one has just dropped today. In it, we meet Karl Denson, the sax man who's toured with the Stones since 2014, following in the footsteps of the late, great Bobby Keys.

Karl talks about his development as an artist and his immersion in jazz and funk at an early age, playing in the West Coast jazz scene, and later moving into pop. This took him on the road with Lenny Kravitz as Lenny's career was taking off, before co-founding The Greyboy Allstars in the '90s, and then his own band, Tiny Universe. Then, as it turned out, it was Lenny who recommended him for the Stones gig, after dropping his name over dinner with Mick Jagger!

It's a really good listen. I hope you enjoy this rare insight from the heart of the Stones' current touring group.

You can get it on Spotify HERE. All other platforms linked from HERE.

Well, we have come to the end of season 1...!  :-[

The final show of this run meets Chris Kimsey, the renowned engineer/producer who worked with the Stones from the 'Sticky Fingers' sessions, through 'Some Girls', 'Emotional Rescue', 'Tattoo You', 'Undercover', and up to 'Steel Wheels'.

Chris takes us inside the control room on all those albums, talking through the punk-influenced 1977 sessions in Paris, the vault searches undertaken to find lost gems for 'Tattoo You', and to the sunny climes of Montserrat, where we find out exactly what Keith Richards serves at his barbecues!

I had great fun recording this one - I met Chris in the famed Olympic Studios, birthplace of countless Stones classics. It was great to be there where so much magic happened and captured on tape. And Chris saw so much of the Stones' evolution - he assisted Glyn Johns in the '60s, so was there for the Brian, Mick Taylor AND Ronnie Wood years, and has quite the perspective from being ever present in the studio.

You can find it on Spotify HERE.

Season two is currently in production and will return later this year. I'll be here in the meantime!  :D

Thank you for listening. I hope y'all enjoy it!
