Title: The Rolling Stones - The Brian Jones Years! (new book)
Post by Sleepy City on Aug 15th, 2024 at 11:57am
Hi all, I've a new book out that may be of interest to some (see link below).  Believe it or not, this was at least partially inspired by Gazza's passing: I'd been making notes on and off for 2 or 3 years, but the excellent 'Hangfire Podcast' youtube channel posted an interview with Gary a couple of days after he died, where he spoke about 5 of his favourite Brian-era tracks. This both renewed my enthusiasm, and made me think how unpredictable life is - so I finally got on with it!  Anyway, here it is:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0DD7RLWW8

(If you like the book, please spread the word!)

Yes it is (and excuse the typo on the back cover, now corrected!).

Click on "Look Inside" below, and you can read a sample:

Yes, it's available on kindle/ebook.  I only uploaded it yesterday, and it can take several days for it to appear on all Amazons.

You have a very good recomendation, as Nico Zentgraf posted this on his FB page "The Rolling Stones Complete"

Haven't read it yet, but Peter Checksfield is a real author, I have his book Undercover which is researched very well.

That's quite a good recommendation Peter

That's brilliant! Nico's a great guy.

I did probably my favourite ever interview to promote that book.

I agree, but are you sure it's Nicky? Sounds more like Stu to me (yes, I know Nicky played on the rest of BB). Nico's site certainly lists Stu for this song.  I like to think it's the final time the original six jammed on an old Blues song.

Well, I'm not sure if it's Nicky or Stu, according to many reliable sources it's Nicky. and trust me, it sounds much more like Nicky to me

I am a fan and researcher of Nicky since 1998, I made this one: http://www.rocksoff.org/nicky.htm

I have heard a lot of not released jams and studio sessions with Nick and Stu, Stu is more boogie woogie oriented and Nicky had the blues feeling

Lovely tribute. I have explored this site thoroughly (many times), a nice combination of well-researched facts and irreverent humour.

Hope you enjoy it (and any Amazon reviews are highly appreciated).   :)

Incidentally, Cleo Sylvestre was on the BBC TV programme 'Antiques Roadshow' last night, bringing along a few Stones-related bits and pieces (including a magazine front cover of her with the band + her Stones-backed single).

@Sleepy City...wondering if you ever watched the latest documentary, The Stones and Brian Jones

https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B0CH764CGW/ref=atv_dp_share_cu_r

I watched it not too long ago. I really enjoyed it.
It didnt come across to me like there was an agenda or slant by the producers.
It was missing references and content to/with Ian Stewart (who was clearly there)...but overall, I really enjoyed it.

I did watch it, but apart from the pre-fame footage that I'd never seen before, I found it a little disappointing, with far too much emphasis on old girlfriends recollections. It was also factually misleading, implying that Brian's parents never saw him perform with the Stones, yet Bill's book 'Stone Alone' names two occasions when this happened.

As you have your greatest Stones Covers compiled...wondering what your thoughts are on these...and will any make the revised edition???

The entire album is here:

Citadel was the first single I believe

I've only listened to 'Citadel'... it's OK, but I prefer The Damned's 1981 cover.

I've no plans to update that book. Oddly enough, I put more effort into that one (130 interviews!) than any other of my books and I'm quite proud of it, but it's also one of my very worst sellers. I guess most Stones fans just aren't interested in a book about cover versions!  :o

Nothing wrong with a bit of irreverent humour (as opposed to irrelevant!).  The hilarious "Keithfucious" page is an example of what I mean, not something you'd see on sites that take themselves (and the band) too seriously.  ;D

I love my own Keithfucius page, (to laugh at your own jokes is a good sympthom)

I have not edited it in years, I think more than 20 years as the libnk to the message board is to the "Novogate" years... I think it needs more wisdom from the one an only Keithfucius

Note: The "Keithfucius say" instead of "Keithfucius says", is intentional since day one... both, Keithfucius and the narrator have accent, you know  ;D ;D ;D

Thank you, Paranoid Android!   :)

I've reposted your review below (hope that's OK):

Be advised, this book is NOT a biography.
Nor is it a snapshot of the times.
It is a nice reference book, mostly in chronological order.
It is all the timelines from the inception of the Rolling Stones until that fateful day, July 3, 1969
when Brian Jones departed this planet and went 2000 light years from home.

I found this book most enjoyable on a few recent flights I took.
Where by reading it while listening to songs on the recordings cited in the book, my flights, well, flew by quickly. I suspect I will be doing more of this on upcoming Sunday mornings while drinking my coffee and trying to decide how else to further procrastinate on life's small tasks.

Kick back listen, read, enjoy!
