Title: Is Mick typically the musical leader, as in One Plus One?
Post by StickyStones on Jun 18th, 2024 at 2:41pm
I'm watching a bit of One Plus One.

In one section, he's instructing Brian and Keith on the chordal structure of the song, the melody on guitar and kinda monitoring them as they play their acoustics and guiding them

In another bit of the film, he's telling Keith how to start the solo ("it should start off very cool") and how the structure is - that the solo comes in after the 3rd verse.

On the sessions for She's A Rainbow, he's instructing Nicky to start off the piano intro more staggered, slower.

Is he typically like that in the studio, or are these just moments captured where he was?

I don't doubt that Mick can be that way and also was like that in this docu (I have never watched this btw) but judging from newer intervies with both Mick and Keith about the making of HD this isn't how he behaved while tbey last were making an album...Mick seemwd very open to Keith's suggestions and Keith told him how to improve songs and when he didn't like something and Mick seemed to trult value and apprecciate Keith's input

In the beginning Brian was the leader, some years later Mick became the leader, and he is the leader nowadays

Keith is Keith

And it works very well that way.

I think the Recording Stones are under Jagger's thumb...the Touring Stones, a different machine altogether,
are still under the watchful eye of Musical Director Chuck Leavell with input from Jagger where it may be needed

I dont even think Chuck is on HD (will confirm shortly)...Though on HD, I honestly think the reigns were handed over to
Producer extraordinaire, Andrew Watt.
I think we will see HD make at least 2 appearances in the Grammy categories next year.
Watt has the clout to push this for Best Album/Song/Rock Single /Rock Performance as well as Best Non-traditional (or similar) Gospel

Not to hijack this thread...but since I mentioned it, heres the Grammy info for nominations:

I hope the voting won't take place just on IG again because that was a clear disadvantage for the Stones due to their older fan demography, almost nobody over 45 seems to have IG...
