Title: Setlist discussions
Post by ronnie-woody on May 3rd, 2024 at 6:02am
Thought we maybe could need a thread like that^^

apart from only one Keith song due to him obviously not being 100% fit, I have some other thoughts:

Do you think that as the tour goes on, they will maybe rotate GOOMC for Shattered or BMHO? I sure do hope so, would make it more interesting imo

Also I think they should rotate either YCAGWYW or Gimme Shelter with Midnight Rambler, cause this is still a band routed in the blues and what they're doing rn (or rather said Mick) is pure entertainment, being more focused on clapping and waving than on playing music, alas why he also won't play guitar on Mess it Up or WWW (I just saw he did at least on the 2nd part of Angry which I loved!!) which frankly is disappointing seeing how imo he is a really decent guitar player for not actually being a guitarist and I love to see him play the guitar...same goes for him playing the harp, sure he added that part in Miss You but imo it's nothing against him playing the harp on MR...

I hope that this development is just due to Keith not being at 100% so Mick obviously has to carry the show, but I hope as soon as Keith is feeling alright again they will play some more demanding songs like CYHMK probably...

I can't complain about setlists, come on! it's The Rolling Stones... They are in their 80s and still rolling!

When I was at the Houston show I was enjoying all songs, my first surprise was Rocks Off after Out of Time, they day before I was singing and dancing that song with my Rocks Off Tee

Second surprise was only one song by Keith. The new versions of Miss You ( I have always loved this song live, I know many hate it), Gimme Shelter, as well as Sweet Sounds of Heaven, made me feel I was in heaven

The only one I really missed was Midnight Rambler... it's hypnotic, it’s fantastic… it’s one of the best songs to watch during a show

See you soon in another show

If Keith starts doing Tell Me Straight soon (once he is fit again and can properly sing) and they add MR at every other show (doesn't have to be every show but every 2nd or 3rd), I will have nothing to "complain" about anymore LOL, I just wanna see them play live and am grateful they are on tour again...
It's obvious Keith only does one song atm cause his voice is fucked up from being sick, so I really hope he'll feel better soon <3
And MR just is my fave live song ever, I have told my friends countless times before that if I went to a Stones show and all they played was MR 10 times in a row, I'd still leave happy, so for me this is the one song they absolutely cannot skip but they did now twice and this is what's mainly upsetting me about the setlist  :-X  :-[ :-/
But apart from that I'm excited to get to hear as many new songs as possible and maybe if lucky Fool to Cry once more because two years ago in Berlin this one was magical <3

I also really hope that they won't just keep switching around MiU and WWW but add more songs of the new album...Dreamy Skies or Get Close would be amazing!

Plus I wish at some shows throughout the tour they'd scratch YCAGWYW and play Rambler again instead...the former gets boring af when you go to more than 1 show, Rambler instead always is a total highlight...I really hope they just omitted it so far because Keith isn't at 100% and hasn't been moving a lot so far and this song always is the one where he is doing most (apart from singing his own songs of course)...but I heard his solos all were great in Glendale, so hopefully his voice will also be alright again soon...I bet at the latest in NYC we'll get 2 Keith songs again

In order to procrastinate using this public holiday to clean my flat as intended, I was thinking about Midnight Rambler and how they haven't always been playing it at every tour (or at least not every show of every tour)

They haven't even been playing it at some of the shows that were recorded for live DVDs, so I just looked up some of the shows they published on DVD (some of which are my fave shows ever to watch) where they didn't play Rambler, those include:

- Shine A Light 2008 (19 songs in total)
- Live at Copacabana Beach 2006 (19 songs in total)
- No Security San Jose 1999 (18 songs in total)
- Bridges to Buenos Aires 1998 (18 songs in total)
- Live at Hampton Coliseum 1981 (26 songs in total)
- Some Girls Live in Texas 1978 (17 songs in total)

Did they really play 26 songs at the Hampton Coliseum in 1981 or is this a compilation of some.sorts after all? I tried to exclude compilations like Ladies and Gentlemen that include footage of an entire tour and focused on sole concerts

This list is making me feel better about them not playing MR yet and I'm hoping they will play it in Foxboro/Boston at least because the Boston strangler :P

Omg I only just realised NOW that apart from Rambler they also scratched SFM but nobody has been complaining about that xD well it's alright to leave it out, but not playing Rambler just seems to take away from their very essence in some way imo, even if they have left it out before many times, as I researched this morning, but still...either Rambler ot CYHMK would be so so great to have..

I watched it some years ago and therefore don't recall all the songs they played at Copacabana, but when I made this (incomplete) list, I only looked up things on Wikipedia, maybe the article was wrong...they also didn't play it at the Wiltern show in 2003 tho (I've been listening to this CD basically non-stop the past few days, but they played CHYMK)

Seeing how for whatever reason they aren't playing MR they should bring back their cover of Rock Me Baby as a rotation song lol I know that won't happen but I'm really enjoying that song on the Wiltern CD...

Yes in 2017 in Zurich and Paris...I went to the Munich show back then so I got Just Your Fool and Ride 'em On Down from Blue&Lonesome...but they also played Dancing With Mr D there which was incredible!

So I was thinking, do you think they brought back Rambler in order to mix up the setlist a bit for NJ2 and because of the "did you hear about the Boston..." for Foxboro? Or do you think they maybe brought it back because since NJ2 Keith is fully fit again (seeing how he also did TMS for the first time there) and he couldn't handle it before because it's such a long and demanding song? Or maybe because Mick missed playing the harp for more than 10 seconds during Miss You?

Personally I think it's a mix of all of those because from yesterday's soundcheck I got the impression that Mick might have missed playing the harp, he was playing a really long harp solo, I really loved to be able to hear that

What a great vote for Orlando...

[list bull-redball]
  • Out Of Control
    [list bull-greenball]
  • Rocks Off
    [list bull-blackball]
  • Bite My Head Off
    [list bull-blueball]
  • She's a Rainbow

    I hope this doesn't Mess It Up for Atlanta and Philly (did you see what I did there?!? )

    She's A Rainbow is a clear winner historically, the casual fan vote will play big here  Odds: 4:3
    Out Of Control...Huge fan fave...Those who's ever seen this live knows how amazing it is live  Odds: 5:1
    Bite My Head Off...Love the in studio version...It sounded good at Racket and it's new...super fans will vote for this  Odds: 10:1
    Rocks Off...what can I say...it's a dark horse at times, depending on the other choices...this one is tough to call Odds: 7:1
                     I say play it anyway!!!

    EDIT:
    As of 2:35pm EDT, IG polls show:
    BMHO = 13%
    SAR = 45%
    OOC = 13%
    Ro = 29%

    Did they actually rehearse Gomper or did you put this in there in order to see if someone will actually fact-check?  ;D

    Does anyone know when Keith last played Little T&A on a tour before this one? Yesterday while waiting at the airport in Orlando I got bored and made a list of all the songs that I have heared live so far (will post later) and I remembered I heard Keith play Before They Make Me Run in 2018 <3

    I feel kinda honoured that this was his last post...but it's also really rough to see, like one day someone's just there, merrily posting, then the next they're gone forever...this truly is showing us once more that we gotta apprecciate all the time we're being given and cherish even the small moments

    Seeing that we're in the setlist discussion thread, yesterday I wanted to look something up setlist wise because I have been thinking about this a lot lately and for the very first time noticed how freaking much time and heart Gazza put into making all these lists and stats, this truly will be his legacy and it's so much apprecciated!

    (Btw since I'm a millennial too dumb to handle old websites lol I did not find the overview of songs per decade but just songs played per show by tour, anyone know where this other site is?)

    I think you are right because I have seen multiple people referring to this, so it's basically like hive memory or something^^ but I'm glad they handled it like that and Mick already was aware before the show that he wouldn't be up to delivering 100% because in Lyon and Gelsenkirchen in 2022 they just scratched one song and ended up playing only 18 when Mick wasn't at 100%

    I just made a post about YCAGWYW on IG and also wanted to share it here because I'm also kinda curious what your impression of this might be. (There also is another one of my pictures accompanying it)

    https://www.instagram.com/p/C7_ZlnLsULO/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

    Admittedly , this is not my favourite one of the warhorses and before I saw them live this tour, I was repeating myself by saying they should just drop it in favour of another Hackney Diamonds song. However, I think they definitely need a song that's a little quieter like that in their set because I felt like they have picked up the speed incredibly compared to the other tours I have witnessed live since 2017 and basically are rushing through their set these days, or at least it feels like it. It's not necessarily a bad thing because it emphasises that Keith's and Ronnie's guitar playing has improved rather than declined with age these past few years, and Steve on the drums is definitely a new driving force behind their powerful performances.

    However, in some moments I'm wishing Charlie back, not just for the sake of having him back, and certainly not because I'm one of those people who hate Steve simply for not being Charlie, I love Steve. But due to his age Charlie was forced to play some songs a little slower and give everyone a break which e.g. let to this beautiful acoustic set on the B stage on Charlie's last tour in 2019. I really wish they'd do something like that again because I feel like that the songs wouldn't just fly by in a rush, but that you could actually breathe for a moment and enjoy. Probably by playing Dead Flowers and Sweet Virginia in Atlanta that's the closest they came in years to reproducing this small but special acoustic set.

    So yeah I know I'm rambling but anyway, I'm glad after all that they're playing YCAGWYW 🙏🏻

    I don't really know in which thread to post this but I'm currently on a train and 2 rows in front of me is an arabic looking guy, maybe in his early 20s and he is listening to music through his headphones but it's still audible and at first he was listening to some live version of Honky Tonk Women and now Start Me Up!! I did not expect that from just looking at him that he would be the demographic for being into the Stones, how neat  ;D (well I mean I'm also not the demographic of a typical Stones fan lol but still xD)

    But well, setlist discussion thread to maybe bridge the gap to why the Stones are sticking so much to their warhorses lol

    Edit: now he is listening to Brown Sugar...how weird would it be of me to just get up and start talking to him?  ;D (oh bummer I have to change trains in 2 minutes xD)

    The warhorse ship sailed away  a long TIME ago. They are committed (and forever more) will be primarily be playing stadiums (and the large wad of cash that goes with it) which means the setlist is always going to be geared to the causal fan who knows the Stones from their copy of Hot Rocks. Long time fans (like myself) would have loved arena tours geared to deep cuts (the catalogue of great songs the Stones have to choose from is unprecedented) but that would require a creative direction the Stones refused to make. Enjoy them! They’re putting on entertaining shows. They also do play a couple of deep cuts each night (if you’re lucky) currently occupying the 5 and 6 slots on the setlist. The only show on the current tour that I’m tempted to attend (aside from the one I’ve already attended) is the one at Ridgedale MO.
