Title: I never knew this - Merry Clayton and Jack Nitzsche Post by andrews27 on Mar 19th, 2022 at 11:36am
Merry Clayton cut the original version of The Shoop-Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss) in 1963, arranged and conducted by Jack Nitzsche. This is a year ahead of Betty Everett, who had the hit with it in 1964...because the arranging and conducting were better - downright historic, IMHO.
Betty Everett put more bottom range into her vocal, which may be Nitzsche's bad call as well. Not enough shoop in it, not to mention a naive approach to arranging multiple instruments, while swooping strings and forceful horns carried the day for Everett. https://secondhandsongs.com/performance/2939 What would Betty Everett have done with Gimme Shelter? |

One of my favorite pictures of Merry, three of the singers there have recorded with The Rolling Stones
