Title: I never knew this - Merry Clayton and Jack Nitzsche

Merry Clayton cut the original version of The Shoop-Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss) in 1963, arranged and conducted by Jack Nitzsche. This is a year ahead of Betty Everett, who had the hit with it in 1964...because the arranging and conducting were better - downright historic, IMHO.

Betty Everett put more bottom range into her vocal, which may be Nitzsche's bad call as well.  Not enough shoop in it, not to mention a naive approach to arranging multiple instruments, while swooping strings and forceful horns carried the day for Everett.

What would Betty Everett have done with Gimme Shelter?

One of my favorite pictures of Merry, three of the singers there have recorded with The Rolling Stones
