Title: Charlie Tribute Show at Ronnie Scott's, London 6/12/2021
Post by Gazza on Dec 6th, 2021 at 11:29am
Quite a few rumours going around of a tribute show happening in London tonight

- Darryl Jones flew in to London a few days ago

- Stonesdoug posted there's a private Stones gig for 220 people this evening and that Ben Waters is also playing

- some have stated that Ronnie Scott's is prebooked for a private party, although the website doesnt indicate this to be the case (although the Upstairs bar seems to not have a booking)

Guess we'll hear more later.  Or not!

Ronnie Scott's

"Bluesey New Orleans infused gumbo to classic standards.
6 December – Private Event"

Darryl reported as flying to London

may not be a formal Stones performance, just a memorial gathering, with music of course

all reports agree: if it happens, absolutely no fans will be admitted

the name of the upstairs venue at Ronnie Scott's: Voodoo Lounge

Ronnie Scott's is less than half a mile from the original site of the Marquee at 165 Oxford Street where the Stones played their first show in 1962. If this turned out to be their last ever show it really would be a case of them coming full circle.

"According to Ben, the Watts family asked that no pictures be taken, though
there was an official photographer. Bill was there but didn't play. Ben also said
the Stones played Down the Road Apiece and Shame Shame Shame.
Ben's being very respectful and circumspect about what he's sharing, as you
would and should fully expect. Lots of well known faces there and I imagine
other artists played too. Charlie's friend since the age of 5, Dave Green was
there. This all from Ben's Facebook page btw, I'm no insider!"

Yes, Ben confirmed the content of the Stones 2-song set in a reply to an enquiry on his facebook post.

Musicians confirmed as playing during the evening :

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood, Darryl Jones, Steve Jordan, Lisa Fischer, Bernard Fowler and Tim Ries accompanied by Lila Ammons, Mark Flanagan, Dave Green, Jools Holland, Gilson Lavis, Ben Waters, Tom Waters and Axel Zwingenberger.

(thanks to Martin Elliott at stonessessions.com)

Interesting that Lisa was there and Sasha wasn't.

Ben confirmed to me on facebook that it was organised by Seraphina and Charlotte Watts.

TRIBUTE ACT Rolling Stones stars reunite for bandmate Charlie Watts celebration in London – four months after drummer died aged 80

THE Rolling Stones took the stage for an impromptu jam last night to celebrate the life of fallen bandmate Charlie Watts.

They gathered at the drummer’s favourite jazz club, Ronnie Scott’s, in the heart of London’s Soho.

The Watts family had invited his closest friends, fellow musicians and extended family to the intimate event which followed his death on August 24th aged 80.

On an emotional night, Mick Jagger attended with partner Melanie Hamrick, Keith Richards with wife Patti Hansen and Ronnie Wood with wife Sally.

The three core Stones members gave heartfelt renditions of R&B classics Shame Shame Shame and Down The Road Apiece, the latter first appearing on their second album in 1965.

Also present but not performing was original bassist Bill Wyman who left the band in 1993. He was there with wife Suzanne Accosta to make it a special reunion for Charlie.

TV host and piano whizz Jools Holland compered the evening and led the house band.

This included Dave Green, Watts’ close friend from childhood and bass player in many of his jazz bands down the years.

He was joined by fellow members of their outfit, The ABC & D Of Boogie Woogie, Ben Waters and Axel Zwingenberger.

Stones’ sax player Tim Ries played a tune he composed for the evening, Blues For Charlie, and this was followed by Lisa Fischer singing Trouble in Mind.

Then she was joined by Bernard Fowler, a long-time Stones guest vocalist, to duet on another gospel song, Up Above My Head.

But the final act of the evening was Mick, Keith and Ronnie singing, “Well there's a place you really get your kicks/It's open every night about twelve to six.”

And of course, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. RIP Charlie Watts.

I'm sure they have their reasons, but it's a pity Bill couldn't join them for the two songs.

the line up on that brief video clip of 'Down the road apiece' seems to have a few guests :

Axel Zwingenberger - piano
Dave Green - stand up bass

(both from Charlie's 'ABC & D of Boogie Woogie' band. Dave Green grew up across the street from Charlie in Wembley and was playing in jazz bands with him since the late 50's)

and I think (going by the hat) that's Jools' Holland's guitarist Mark Flanagan standing behind Ronnie.

Not sure where Darryl is. Maybe getting the drinks in or else he's also there but off-camera.  I guess it's possible he only played on 'Shame Shame Shame'

I thought the same thing but with Mick Taylor as well.

Love Keef's outfit for the evening.

Doesn't look like it.

Serious amount of piano players in that line up, so the evening clearly wasn't crying out for more ivory-ticklers.
