Duh. I've been busy, and have only listened to the thing twice. Didn't sound like this version at the time. |

I thought IORR was first recorded without keef, who was then angry and overdubbed the shit out of it with his own guitars ?

Dunno about him being 'angry' but yes, the original demo recorded at The Wick (Ronnie's house and until recently the residence of Pete Townshend) in December 1973 featured Mick on vocals and guitar, Ronnie on guitar and bass, Kenney Jones on drums and David Bowie on backing vocals and 'handclaps'. Willie Weeks overdubbed his bass part later. Keith overdubbed some guitar parts and Stu added piano. Bowie's part was pretty much erased. Mick Taylor, Bill and Charlie don't play on the released version.
The original demo was cut when Mick got together with Ronnie to work on some songs for Woody's 'I Got My Own Album To Do'. They wrote and cut two songs together at The Wick - 'It's Only Rock 'n' Roll' and 'I Can Feel The Fire'. Mick decided to keep IORR for the Stones, so the trade-off was that Mick would leave his co-writing credit off 'I Can Feel The Fire' (although he's featured as co-lead vocalist) and Ronnie would do the same for IORR. Not the brightest financial move Ronnie ever made, although it would hardly be the last time he would make a business decision regarding the Stones that would cost him millions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJL08CfldPw Considering he got a co-writing credit on a song that he didnt compose and which sold zillions whereas the original co-writer got merely acknowledged with the meaningless 'inspiration by Ron Wood', I think Keith was the big winner with this one! |

"It's only rock 'n' roll, but I like it" does sound like a throwaway phrase Ronnie would come up with during a solo-record jam. More of a throwaway than he imagined, though...
