We'll Keep Rolling for Our Charlie Exclusive: Rolling Stones to continue US tour within weeks and 'do Charlie Watts proud' Charlie Watts will be remembered by his former bandmates as they are set to go ahead with their US tour in the drummer's memory By Tom Bryant Head of Showbiz The remaining Rolling Stones have paid heartfelt tribute to Charlie Watts as they vowed to go ahead with their US tour in the drummer’s memory. The band are due on stage in St Louis, in Missouri, on September 26, with further shows planned until November. Despite their heartache, a source said: “It goes without saying” that the band would play the No Filter tour, which was derailed last year by Covid. He said: “They will want to honour him and celebrate his amazing musical legacy. They will want to do Charlie proud.” And Small Faces drummer Kenney Jones told the Mirror it was the right decision adding: “They have got to continue. Charlie would have wanted that." |

The Sun:
ROLLING ON The Rolling Stones WILL go ahead with their US tour next month and pay tribute to late Charlie Watts on stage by Simon Boyle THE Rolling Stones plan to pay an emotional tribute to late drummer Charlie Watts on next month’s tour. The group have been devastated by 80-year-old Charlie’s death on Tuesday but insist he would have wanted them to continue their US tour. Mick Jagger, 78, Keith Richards, 77, and Ronnie Wood, 74, are due to resume their No Filter Tour in St Louis, Missouri, on September 26. A music insider said: “The band want to make the show a celebration of his life. "He was like a brother to them but they know he would have hated the thought of them cancelling shows. “Charlie had given them his blessing to tour without him following his operation, so they will honour his wishes.” |

I think the tour will go ahead, mostly for insurance / contractual reasons. They'd already confirmed Charlie wouldnt be playing on it anyway.
Whether it should go ahead or whether the band will really want to go ahead are two different things, I guess. |

It wont be great without Charlie, it might be good, just ok, or it could sound all wrong. I'll be whispering to my friends "that song didn't sound good without Charlie, did that sound as good to you? " IT JUST CAN'T BE AS GOOD ANYMORE! But I'll still go for MICK and KEEF and RONNIE because I love those guys.

Does anyone really know what they'll be doing yet. Or indeedr what trousers they'll be wearing? Who said that? With his trousers around his ankles, no doubt.
It's doubfulf the band have a clue yet themselves. But they have a habit of pulling great crackers out of their barrels The photo of Charlie and Keith cradling 'the babies'/the twins is lovely. It's Nappy Days. It's Spock being rejuvenated. it's Charlie hanging out lingerie in a garden in the '60s |

speculation, yes, but there's mounting circumstantial evidence:
1) they knew all along charlie's illness was terminal, though of course they didnt know when. the cover stories assured charlie his privacy. 2) rehearsals have been ongoing since approx Aug 20, and possibly before that (darryl canceled an appearance for aug 15 "due to a rolling stones obligation". there was also a report that steve jordan signed on sometime in july). musical director chuck leavell can drill the band if/when both mick and keith need to be elsewhere 3) private jet travel to and from the UK, discretely, as necessary, using all the quarantine-free exemptions available to the rich (private doctor, daily testing, private check-in/customs etc.). the boston-area location cuts down on flight time and the jet has comfortable bedrooms and full communications 4) robert kraft undoubtedly providing logistical assistance boston globe today: "we’re told that singer Mick Jagger and guitarists Keith Richards and Ron Wood had been holed up in Boston for more than 10 days" in (and out of) boston, very probably. holed up, no. |

someone on facebook (so very important) told me that I'm not friends with the stones so have no right to give my opinion on whether the tour should go ahead.
The Stones are best friends he said, so only the should decide if they should continue touring. All the time I was thinking that mick & Keith would read my FB posts and take notes, but this person set me straight. |

Those maniacs at IORR are working on it as they all have a degree in Contact Law and know the inside operations of a tour of this type and know what each member of the Stones thinks about the roadmap ahead. |

i don't remember the specifics, but some biographer was able to figure out by mick's school schedule, that it had to be a tuesday, and for some other reason, it could only have been one of two such tuesdays (and i think there is still a dispute as to which one). anyway, Time Is On Our Side gives it as Oct 17, and that's what it says on the plaque, so that's what i celebrate the plaque's nice, but personally i would have gone with a sorta colossus-of-rhodes statue that you could ride up inside and look out at the town through the eyes of mick and keith. an english statue of LIBERTY, as befits these two freedom fighters As to the importance of the oct 61 date, the best testimony we have, aside from charlie's quote above, is of course keith's letter to his aunt patty... "You know I was keen on Chuck Berry and I thought I was the only fan for miles but one mornin' on Dartford Stn. (that's so I don't have to write a long word like station) I was holding one of Chuck's records when a guy I knew at primary school 7-11 yrs y'know came up to me. He's got every record Chuck Berry ever made. He is called Mick Jagger and the greatest R&B singer this side of the Atlantic and I don't mean maybe. I play guitar (electric) Chuck style we got us a bass player and drummer and rhythm-guitar and we practice 2 or 3 nights a week. SWINGIN'." |

Hologram Charlie?!?
Is that the latest rumor?? Sounds weird and marginally insulting. Not sure how those hologram Elvis' and Tupaks went over in the past. MAYBE archival footage on the big screens as the same songs are played live to honor Charlie...or just footage as a medley of his best moments are played live...(a 4 or 5 song medley)...which would also allow for room for a few other songs during the "normal" concert". This would be great fodder for additional setlist threads, LOL |

Among mine is gratitude for the courage now being displayed by keith and mick and steve jordan, defying the quit-mob. long may they reign. |

The Rolling Stones Reflect on Loss of Charlie Watts,
Detail Plans for Upcoming Tour “Charlie held the band together for so long, musically,” says Mick Jagger, “because he was the rock the rest of it was built around” By Andy Greene September 23, 2021 The Rolling Stones have kept a low public profile since the death of Charlie Watts on August 24th, but in a series of new interviews with longtime Rolling Stone writer David Fricke, they talk about the devastating loss, moving forward with drummer Steve Jordan, the song selection for their upcoming tour, and a possible continuation of the tour next year, which happens to be their 60th anniversary. The main topic through all of the interviews was the loss of Watts. “The thing about Charlie was that he was always there, always played beautifully and was always willing to discuss what to do about it – how he could make it better,” Mick Jagger said. “He held the band together for so long, musically, because he was the rock the rest of it was built around … The thing he brought was this beautiful sense of swing and swerve that most bands wish they could have. We had some really nice conversations in the last couple of years about how all this happened with the band. It’s a huge loss to us all. It’s very, very hard.” Keith Richards felt the same way. “Charlie had an incredible sense of humor,” he said. “And my joy was I loved to crack him up. If you could hit that spot, he wouldn’t stop, and it was the funniest thing in the world. He had an incredible sense of humor that he kept to himself unless you sparked it. And then it could be painful to laugh.” “A most vital part of being in this band was that Charlie Watts was my bed,” he continued. “I could lay on there, and I know that not only would I have a good sleep, but I’d wake up and it’d still be rocking. It was something I’ve had since I was 19. I never doubted it. I never even thought about it.” They’ve spent the past few weeks rehearsing with Steve Jordan. The drummer has been in their orbit since the Eighties, and he was a member of Keith Richards’ band X-Pensive Winos. “He’s very respectful of Charlie,” Jagger said. “He played with Keith before we started the rehearsals, and then he did homework, listening to the tunes. When we talk about what Charlie did on this one, we listen to the original record, and then we listen to the live versions. There’s certain licks that we want to do, that Charlie did. There’s certain drum licks that one doesn’t think about, but they’re part of the tune in a way that a bass part or a guitar part is part of the tune.” Richards said he started working with Jordan back in July. At the time, they hoped it would be a temporary situation and Watts would return to the group once he recovered from his illness. “Steve brings with him a lot of knowledge about the Stones,” he said. “He’ll say, ‘No, Charlie plays like this.’ Steve is so meticulous, so aware of the seat he’s sitting in. Steve said this to me: Charlie played the drums. He didn’t hit them.” The Stones generally play 19 songs at any given show, but Jagger said they’ve rehearsed 80 or 90 tunes for the tour. “I’m not saying we just touched on them, jammed on them,” he said. “We can actually play them. That’s a huge amount. Keith and I were saying, the reality is that we have to do at least twelve, 13 numbers that most everyone knows…We have a couple of numbers from the extras in the Tattoo You reissue. We do ‘Living in a Ghost Town,’ which sounds pretty good. We’ve got tons of numbers from most eras. So we have a big set list. We can certainly change up the set list. But we still have to do ‘Paint It, Black.'” According to Ron Wood, the addition of Steve Jordan has given even familiar songs a new feeling. “‘Street Fighting Man’ has a new energy,” he said. “‘Midnight Rambler’ has a new approach. We thought, ‘Oh dear, how are we going to do ‘Midnight Rambler’? Because there’s another language of its own in that song. It takes its own course now, and Steve, if anything, is leading the charge: ‘I’ll tell ya when it’s gonna speed up, I’ll tell ya when its gonna be dynamic.; To see Keith say, ‘Okay, then, you tell me’ – it was a really different thing. And Mick’s like, ‘Yeah, I’ll take that.'” “Charlie would have loved it,” Wood added. “There’s an energy that Charlie projected through his sticks, but Steve projects it physically as well. Whereas Charlie sat dead still, Steve is moving, and so is the whole drum podium. You can see the satisfaction on Keith’s face, on Mick’s face.” The tour ends November 20th at the Circuit of the America race track in Austin, Texas, and Jagger said he’s not ready to say whether they will wrap it up once it’s done. “I’ve been asked that question since I was 31,” he said. “And your answer is the same. I don’t know. I mean, anything could happen. You know, if things are good next year and everyone’s feeling good about touring, I’m sure we’ll do shows. I’m just trying to concentrate on this tour now.” excerpted from: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/the-rolling-stones-charlie-watts-upcoming-tour-1230975/?gfYCe |

The rolling-stone-mag interviews above were extracted from longer interviews
that have now been published by Variety. Some further excerpts: Mick: Charlie wasn’t just a straight rock drummer. We played with rock drummers before. We played with Carlo Little, who used to play with Screaming Lord Sutch’s band. He had two bass drums – it sounded great. But it wasn’t Charlie. Charlie brought another sensibility, the jazz touch. And he didn’t play very heavy. Sometimes, if I got him mad enough, he would. That was the only way I could get him to play really heavy – to get him mad. Keith: Steve and I have been working together on this since somewhere in July. At the time, he was just going to be sitting in for Charlie, which was already to Steve like “Wow!” Steve brings with him a lot of knowledge about the Stones. He’ll say, “No, Charlie plays like this.” Steve is so meticulous, so aware of the seat he’s sitting in. Also, Steve and Daryl Jones working together is another thing. From a musical point of view, it’s incredibly energetic and wonderfully inspiring. I was like, “I can’t pick this up. I don’t care who it is. I can’t pick this up without Charlie.” But once Steve and I started to get into it, hey, this is the way it’s supposed to be. Ronnie: Steve has respected Charlie’s approach to the drums, the different attitudes he had for each number. He’s adapted that in his own style, put his own energy and kick into what was originally there. Charlie would have loved it. There’s an energy that Charlie projected through his sticks, but Steve projects it physically as well. Whereas Charlie sat dead still, Steve is moving, and so is the whole drum podium. You can see the satisfaction on Keith’s face, on Mick’s face. https://variety.com/2021/music/news/the-rolling-stones-charlie-watts-legacy-no-filter-tour-1235072249/ |

Mick offers some of the most interesting musical insights into the band when he wants to. The most interesting question though was this to Ronnie:
"It’s interesting that you mention “Hand of Fate.” Charlie certainly put a stamp on it. But I can see Steve putting some New York soul into it as well." There are so many but two songs stick out for me that are pure Charlie and no one on earth could play them as perfectly and fluidly as he did: Hand of Fate and Beast of Burden. His drumming is both solidly in the pocket while being a fluid single movement. Listening to Hand of Fate has been emotional recently. |

Will it show just 3 guys, or 4 with steve, or 5 with darryl, or even 6 with chuck ? Or will there be no next official photo, but only the name and the tongue and the music ? I've put in my vote for FIVE, but my vote of course counts for nothing. Anything they decide will be fine by me. I'm extraordinarily happy with Stones2021, with both the live performances and the fully finished outtakes. Whatever else they've put out this year that i maybe haven't completely buzzed off yet, so fucking what one of my favorite albums ever is "blue and lonesome". as i understand it, it was created live by the core group of mick, keith, ronnie, charlie and darryl, with keyboards and such added later. Just substitute steve and get back in the studio and make some more recordings and call yourselves The Rolling Stones, and then let chuck and matt and the remainder of The Rolling Stones Orchestra come in later and tart up the recordings as necessary. Please. (and yeah i'm kidding about the "rolling stones orchestra" as ever being an actual name. but it is a FACT, and a finely tuned machine, and everybody is doing a great job. i mean, just listen to the end of "monkey man" where sasha's background vocals kick the song up to the next level, or how perfectly chuck does nicky's tricky piano part at the end of "street fighting", or the sax duel on "miss you" or every little thing bernard and matt are contributing to complete the semi-original sound of each song...) |

This topic deserves a few more words... I mean, how clear does mick need to make it ?! The original "fiji jim" was about how they needed ronnie to come in and save the band in the formidable wake of mick taylor and this new "fiji jim" clearly is about how they needed steve (and darryl) to save the band in the extremely formidable wake of charlie watts and for those who think mick and keith werent sentimental enough about the loss of their great friend, well, mick agrees with you: "there ain't no time for tears" and "i got ice in my veins". "one last dance/we're gonna bust this place/or else go down in flames" yeah so obviously it hasnt been just ronnie and steve and darryl saving the band. the loss of mick taylor back then and the loss of charlie this year served to re-light the flames within mick and keith. doubters were everywhere and needed to be put in their place The bottom line: when mick name-checks steve and darryl in the same context that he once welcomed new band member ronnie wood, how can i be anything but encouraged ? the dream is still alive |

Dec 19 1975 was the date that Rod announced that the Faces had broken up as I recall.
So, whilst Woody was 'free' to join the Stones after that, I don't think it was confirmed publicly until 'Black and Blue' came out. On the '75 tour he wasn't a Stone (just a guest like Ollie Brown and Billy Preston), but on the '76 tour he was. I can't imagine any future 'official' photos being anything other than Mick, Keith and Ronnie. |

i think its very significant that theres been no official photo of just mick, keith, and ronnie used in connection with any of the marketing for this tour. (also significant: they no longer put up charlie's photo at the end of the show. just the tongue and "see you soon") so FWIW i can't imagine any future official photo of the Stones (post this tour) that does not include Steve. You're not the Stones without a kick-ass drummer, just a remnant like the Who. But Keith and Ron both play bass, and Don Was is in the studio with them, so Darryl (like Bill) is not as essential to their identity as Steve. but Darryl is playing a lot more stonesy on this tour. and i do like the 5-man look much better than 4. |

Maybe a Charlie tribute show (at RAH) with special guests, etc filling in throughout the set would be nice....but an overall 2022 plan/tour? Likely, sure... I hope it works out for that side of the Atlantic Pond. I know there were rumblings of a tribute show/shows in Dec...where/when, was never suggested as far as I recall... Oh Great Gaz-ZAH??? RAH for a Stones show or 'residency' is nothing more than a fantasy wish list for some fans.
The place holds 5,500 people. Its a lovely venue and the acoustics are superb. Saw Dylan there about 6 years ago. A sizeable amount of those tickets (maybe 20-25%) are held for members, minimising the tickets that would be available to the public. Imagine the price of a Stones ticket in a venue that size - and then add an extra zero to it if you're hoping for a member to resell you their ticket via a secondary market. All that plus the fact that the Stones play two shows a week. Why would they spend seven weeks playing the RAH when they can sell the same amount of tickets in one night at Wembley Stadium? Never going to happen. I've heard nothing further about a tribute show other than the initial paper talk. Seems a bit too late in the year for it to be announced, put on sale and take place this side of Christmas. If anything, with covid rates rising again, if this does happen, having it in the winter seems a long shot. |

Yeah an Albert Hall residency never made sense for the reasons y'all stated...
But a special one- or two-night filmed event to cap off a Euro/UK stadium tour, that still seems like a decent idea to me (especially since the Hard Rock FL show did not at all play the "special" or "historic" angles) A SIDE QUESTION FOR ANYONE: On my screen, the default 11pt font on this site displays as a ridiculously tiny 8pt. That's why i generally change my posts to 12pt, which displays as 12pt. The too-tiny font happens no matter what browser i use. is this true for everybody, or just something about my computer? also: the dialog box where i type messages displays at an even more ridiculous 6pt by way of comparison, the iorr dot org forum displays at true 11pt for me |

Title: Re: "We'll Keep Rolling for Our Charlie" (2022 - ?) Post by Rev 20 Redlights on Dec 5th, 2021 at 7:29am I'm not a photographer, but I am a fan, so here's my 2 cents: Every shot selected by Darryl features interactions with other band members. And yes of course solo photos can possess great power and/or charm, but to be frank every individual shot of mick or keith or ronnie or any of them does not qualify as great just because its in focus (which i understand is all by itself not that easy when you have a moving target) in this thread i used shots by Jini and Hendrik and Bjornulf, among others, that like Darryl's selections, highlighted group dynamics. But there were few enough of those shots that i often needed to resort to freeze-frames from youtube vids (so give me half a credit for those i guess because they communicate something about those Stones shows not captured by our still photographers) yeah, its much harder to get a good photo of an endangered sonaran jaguar than a cute puppy, but i'd rather have one of the former than a hundred of the latter. And there's almost nothing more endangered these days than the kind of spontaneous moments between musicians that the Stones still specialize in. I wish our photographers spent more of their efforts hunting for them. Not that its any of my business |

Excerpted and edited: It didn’t seem remotely possible that The Rolling Stones, the World’s Greatest Rock & Roll Band, could outdo themselves nearly 60 years into their storied career. But what the Stones achieved in 2021 with the restart of their “No Filter Tour” stands out as among one of the legendary group’s greatest accomplishments. Not only was it the highest grossing tour of Pollstar’s 2021 chart year, bringing in $115.5 million and more than 516,000 tickets over the course of just two months, but, more importantly, it served as a beacon for the entire industry... ...when Michael Cohl outbid Bill Graham for 1989’s “Steel Wheels Tour,” it was a historic paradigm shift that displaced the regional tour promoter system for the single promoter model that has ruled the day ever since. It also included groundbreaking sponsorship deals and saw revenues in excess of $140 million, which for then was unheard of. The Stones’ 1994-1995 “Voodoo Lounge” run hauled $320 million and sold 6.4 million tickets, while their “Bigger Bang Tour” exceeded that benchmark with $558 million grossed from 2005-2007 and 4.7 million tickets. The Stones pulled in $870 million in the aughts, $929 million in the teens, and an estimated $800 million in the '90s – a whopping $2.6 billion over those decades... ...(Marketing exec) gives a shout out to the Stones’ indispensable manager Joyce Smyth, who is “absolutely amazing, she makes everything happen.” What have the Stones' team learned that others in the industry should know for when they get out there? “You better take it seriously,” he says. “We ain’t done. This whole thing about the ‘Roaring ’20s’ and all of that, we said a long time ago, the comeback’s going to be one hell of a bumpy road, and it’s going to continue being a bumpy road for a while. So all these Pollyannish*** ones who think that, ‘Oh, it’s going to be like it was before,’ that ain’t the case. It’s tough out there. You’ve got to be smart. If you lose shows, that’s a lot of money.” And the million- if not billion- dollar question for 2022, with the band’s incredible 60th year approaching, is will they or won’t they go back out? “We can’t talk about it”. That’s a far better answer than no. (1) Pollstar's numbers exclude the last two shows, which for some reason they count as 2022 (2) So the $2.6 billion figure is just US shows from 1989 forward, so we're for sure way north of $3 billion now overall, and counting... (3) here's the secret strategy: Book only crowd-friendly NFL cities during an already-confirmed NFL season, because no politician dares fuck with the NFL, not even Fauci (4) Is there an equivalent UK/European strategy to employ? Don't ask me, ask Gazza *** "Its gonna be easy, believe me/We're going back to paradise" I told y'all at the time that Easy Sleazy was Mick making a particularly nasty joke at ass-kissing Dave Grohl's expense. Confirmed. Also: despite requiring fans to show their vax documents, the Foos have so far this year covid-cancelled shows in California, Minnesota, and Abu Dhabi. They've got US/UK stadium shows scheduled for May-July 2022. Addendum/correction: two days ago an unspecified Foo Fighter was “rushed to hospital from an airport in Chicago”, on the way to Abu Dhabi. That's why it was cancelled. And its odd, from a Stones fan's perspective, that its been over 2 days and there is a complete black-out on further news from the band, and just a few comments and zero speculation on the Foo fan forum. Jeez, we'd be going nuts... |

there's plenty of speculation now that, because of the secrecy, it must be virology PhD David Grohl. but no real evidence that i'm aware of... all we know for sure is that its not lead guitarist Chris Shiflett, who is going ahead with his scheduled solo shows next week... |

Title: Re: "We'll Keep Rolling for Our Charlie" (2022 - ?) Post by Rev 20 Redlights on Dec 15th, 2021 at 9:27am Chuck to Business Insider today: No one knows how much longer we’ll be playing and going on tour. We’re obviously toward the end of the journey, but it’s not over yet. Has Chuck been demoted from his post as "musical director"? In addition to being the band’s principal keyboardist, the guys have bestowed upon me the title “musical navigator” which comes from my practice of documenting most everything we do during rehearsals, from keeping set lists to setting the pace for songs through hand signals and conducting. Charlie Watts often relied on my signals, so I grew used to looking across the stage and catching his eye while we played. During the tour that we just wrapped up, it was hard looking across the stage and not seeing him anymore. Probably because Steve doesn't look back at him. Steve is clearly setting the pace on most tunes now, taking his cues from Keith and Mick (I'm not now nor have I ever been a Chuck hater. His contributions are clearly vital to the band, but the fact that the center of gravity onstage has shifted back a bit towards the drummer is a very good thing) And: Just when you think the guy can't possibly get any more gauche... I love giving shout-outs to fans and playing a snippet of tunes from the artists I work with like The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers Band, David Gilmour and more. Birthdays, anniversaries, other special occasions or just for fun! From only C$224. https://memmo.me/ca/en/profile/chuck-leavell?aw_account=6176929345&utm_campaign&aw_campaign=15424274392&aw_adgroup&aw_creative&aw_dev=m&aw_target |

two years ago, my prediction... i got the year wrong, but other than that... (P.S. Dave Grohl death hoax spreads on Facebook Rumors of the musician’s alleged demise gained traction on Thursday after a ‘R.I.P. Dave Grohl’ Facebook page attracted nearly one million ‘likes’. Those who read the ‘About’ page were given a believable account of the American musician’s passing... Hundreds of fans immediately started writing their messages of condolence on the Facebook page, expressing their sadness that the talented 52-year-old musician, singer and songwriter was dead. And as usual, Twittersphere was frenzied over the death hoax. On Friday (December 17) the musician's reps officially confirmed that Dave Grohl is not dead. “He joins the long list of celebrities who have been victimized by this hoax. He's still alive and well, stop believing what you see on the Internet,” they said. The news report of a Foo member rushed to the hospital last week has still never been confirmed or denied. And to be completely honest, I'm not even sure if this "facebook death hoax" story is true. It might be that the hoax itself is a hoax, since i only found the hoax story on one news site... Such is life these days. Best of luck finding out the truth about anything) |

First of all Fauci is not a politician. Second not every city was so called NFL friendly. Third, if by HFL Friendly cities, you mean major market cities where they always play. Then yeah, you were spot on. :warhorse :shutthefuckup :nanker |
