Title: Tattoo You reissue
Post by Gazza on Aug 17th, 2021 at 12:32pm
Just got an e-mail from the official site which seems to confirm 19th August at 2 pm (UK time) as the announcement for the Tattoo You reissue

'Get Ready to be Re-inked' goes the tagline

Bizarrely, they've provided a link to an unofficial youtube account (Rolling Stones Data - its a good one, always worth following) showing the youtube marketing promo by Mick this time 40 years ago (check out the artwork in the background.... :o)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFv06jzryNI

Going by the artwork, it looks like 'Trouble's a-Comin' is one of the bonus tracks.

If the reports about a 4-CD/5 LP set are true, I guess it'll be

CD 1/LP 1 - original album
CD 2/LP 2 - outtakes
CD 3 & 4/LP 3, 4 & 5 - a full 1981 concert.

Trying to figure out the titles of the unreleased songs based on the above images.  The recently circulated 'Trouble's a comin' is the only one that's jumping out at me.

There was a song cut for 'Black and Blue' called 'English Rose'. Maybe the white roses at the top of the picture are a reference to that one.

Gazza, dear friend, you ain't got squat on those lemmings over at IORR.
They have it AAAAAAALLLLLLL figured out...LOL

I still think it is hilarious that TATTOO YOU, essentially, an album that is a collection of outtakes from ~1974-1980, is getting reissued with additional outtakes that didn't even make to the first cut of outtakes...a collection of outtakes with the addition of outtakes of outtakes.

I am curious as to what songs from the recent FFSO will make it to this collection...

'Living In The Heart Of Love', supposedly. Guess we'll find out tomorrow.

Yeah, the concept is ludicrous. Whatever songs get included, I doubt many (if any) were amongst those under consideration in spring 1981.

It's here...
Regular 2-CD edition + Super Deluxe Edition. Details below:

DESCRIPTION
The Rolling Stones | Tattoo You (40th Anniversary Remastered Super Deluxe 5LP Boxset)

Release Date: 22 October, 2021

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Includes 5 x 180g Heavyweight Vinyl. (LP1 Brand New 2021 Remaster of Tattoo You, LP2 Lost & Found:

9 Previously Unreleased Tracks, LP3, 4 & 5 Still Life: Wembley Stadium 1982) + 124 page book & lenticular artwork.

Tattoo You celebrates 40 years with the release of a brand new deluxe remastered edition of the chart topping, multi-platinum album. The Super Deluxe 5LP Boxset includes the newly remastered version of Tattoo You, Lost & Found, Still Life: Wembley Stadium 1982 plus a bonus picture disc pressing of Tattoo You and a 124 Page Book featuring over 200 rare photos from recording sessions & world tour + interviews with producer Chris Kimsey & photographer Hubert Kretzscmar.

The package includes a special lenticular sleeve.

The Lost & Found disc contains no fewer than nine previously unreleased songs from the period of the album's original release, newly completed and enhanced with additional vocals and guitar by the band. Among these, 'Living In The Heart Of Love' is a quintessential Stones rock workout with all of the group on top form, complete with urgent guitar licks and fine piano detail.

Other highlights of Lost & Found include a killer version of 'Shame, Shame, Shame’, first recorded in 1963 by one of the band's blues heroes, Jimmy Reed; their reading of Dobie Gray's soul gem 'Drift Away'; and a fascinating reggae-tinged version of 'Start Me Up’.

Still Life: Wembley Stadium 1982 is an unmissable memento of the band's London show in June of that year on the Tattoo You tour.

The mighty 26-track set is packed with Stones mega-hits, including an opening 'Under My Thumb' and all-time greats such as 'Let's Spend The Night Together’, 'Honky Tonk Women' and 'Brown Sugar’.
The Wembley show has covers of the Temptations' 'Just My Imagination,' Eddie Cochran's 'Twenty Flight Rock,' the Miracles' 'Going To A Go Go' and early rock 'n' roller the Big Bopper's 'Chantilly Lace.' It also features early live workouts for tracks from the then-new Tattoo You such as 'Start Me Up’, 'Neighbours’, 'Little T&A' and 'Hang Fire’.

Nine bonus tracks is rather paltry.

Good to see 'Fiji Jim' and 'Its a Lie' getting a release. I thought we may have missed the boat with those two when they were left off the 'Some Girls' reissue.

'Come To The Ball' is the only 'new' song I've never heard of. Maybe its a new title for a song that was previously documented (in the way that 'Have You Seen Her Ass' was retitled 'All The Rage' )

I wonder which of the two Wembley shows will be released.

Title: Re: Tattoo You reissue

'Living In The Heart of Love' will be the first single, released this week. Expect a video to be unveiled later today.

'Trouble's a Comin' will be released as the second single on September 24th with 'Come to the Ball' listed as a 'DSP focus track' (not sure what that is) when the album comes out on October 22nd.

It was. And this is different again. It's about 44 seconds longer for a start (4:13 vs 3:29). The long-bootlegged take is about 4:07.

Same basic take but there's been some recent vocals and guitars added for sure. And a more prominent piano (not sure if thats added or simply a case of it being brought up higher in the mix)

The promo video features a brief snippet of 'Drift Away', which also sounds like the vocal has been touched up a little

I was never a fan of Living in the Heart of Love.  I'd rather hear them push Fiji Jim, though I haven't yet heard how much it's junked up with overdubs.

Dylan's people are (mostly) better at assembling "Bootleg Series" collections, because they understand that the fans who want this stuff want it handled as archival material and not product retreaded into potential Spotify hits.  Why can't we have one of the two Fiji Jim takes overdubbed and the other left raw?  Are they going to tart up the reggae Start Me Up until it's bastardized?

Not even anything from the 80's at all, LOL.

Just from my own research and notes I had from the FFSO thread:

Side C

Living In The Heart Of Love  - 1974
Fiji Jim  - 1978
Troubles A’ Comin  - 1972
Shame Shame Shame  - 1975 or 1978
DriftAway - 1974

Side D

It’s A Lie - 1978
Come To The Ball - ???
Fast Talking Slow Walking - 1972
Start Me Up (Early Version) - 1975ish

Great video, best they have done in years. Seems to capture the mood of the time it was recorded, while being in the present day at the same time. Just beautiful tribute at the end as well.

I've never been afraid to knock them but I have to take back my criticism of their failure to market this in light of them having more important matters occupying their time and minds.

'Trouble's a-comin' was scheduled to be released as a single on Friday September 24th, when this package was announced in mid-August (see page 1 of this thread), so hopefully that's still on schedule.

I didnt actually know it was a cover until Mick introduced it the other night as a Chi-Lites song. The writer was Eugene Record, who was the band's lead singer. All I knew was that it was recorded in Nassau in early 1979 for 'Emotional Rescue'.

Here's the original from 1970. It was a b-side (the A-side 'Are You My Woman' was the song that had its horn riff sampled on Beyoncé's  'Crazy In Love')

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sbt9DZGQlE4

It was also covered by Johnny Sayles in 1973 :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYYlXJiiZb0

This was one of the songs I liked the most on the 3-CD outakes that came out a few months ago

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMdiTZxX9qo

(it'll be interesting to hear if theres been any further overdubs added for the official version), but it's a little disappointing to find out its not a lost Jagger/Richards gem.  It does seem that most of the best finished outtakes in the Stones' vaults tend to be covers. I guess its true that for their own songs, the lyrics and vocals are around the last things to get finished, which is why so many of them sound half finished (and also why we havent got a career spanning boxed set of outtakes)

If someone saw fit to put it all together, theres a terrific Stones album of soul covers out there waiting to be unleashed.

Very well crafted tune. All the elements of broad base appeal and it stays in your head. Beat and electric rhythm make you wanna dance like a drunky monkey !!!
Great number to kick off a set and wake up a crowd. Draw off this song as inspiration to fabricate other trademark works.

YT review that gets it.

hopefully it grows on me, but my first reaction is, i'd much rather have the
"finished outtake" in better quality. these new vocals are *biting my tongue*

One good thing: I can't be disappointed in the upcoming sanitized versions of
"it's a lie" and "fiji jim". because i've already lost all hope...

A half hour later and i'm already weakening

already happily seeing it (and hearing it) more mick's way

the lyric video helps

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIyVrCtnuQ4

Everybody is so divided
Misled and misguided
Nobody wants to see two points of view

Because we're living in a crazy system
Yeah what they will do with their wisdom yeah
Trouble's a coming
In more way's than one
Old Man Trouble, stay away from me

Quite a healthy contrast with what I immediately called mick's insincere,
intentionally crackpot lyrics for "easy sleazy" (i like dave grohl so hopefully
he learns from this how easily (sleazily) he's co-opted by any authority
figure that gives him a bit of recognition. He's a very good rocker with a
very good band. he shouldnt kiss so much ass)

We escaped from the prison walls
Open the windows and open the doors
it's easy easy
It's gonna be a garden of earthly delights
Yeah it's easy
Yeah easy, believe me
We're all headed back to paradise
Yeah easy, believe me

Catchy ear worm stuff here.
The Stones have not sounded this confident on a song since Start Me Up.

Just played it on a better system= wowed.
It sounds like a classic Stones song, vocals, lyrics, backing vocals. Great guitars, drums, hand claps. It's got it all! This tune is wonderful.
Instant classic, thanks.
I know my Stones shit.
You think I've just been postin' drivel for the last 25 years?
I've been waiting for this since Dirty Work.

Intriguingly, he talks about working in the studio with Charlie recently (for the next Stones album)

From a post by Nico Zentgraf on social media, we can expect the previously unheard track 'Come to the Ball' to be a finished version of this instrumental (it has also been bootlegged as 'Windmill')

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x47_qEA89MM

The original was a GHS outtake worked on in Kingston in December 1972 and then at Village Recorders in LA in late January 1973 when they had a couple of weeks off between the Hawaiian and Australian shows caused by the cancellation of the Japanese leg.

So, unless their parts have been wiped, it should feature Mick Taylor and Nicky Hopkins.

From what I've read from a couple of people with more time on their hands and a keener ear than me, the live material is all from the Wembley 26/6/82 show. Nothing from 25/6/82. And they've edited out the botched intro to 'Shes So Cold' by Ronnie that you can hear on the circulating video (there's been a pro shot of the last 45 minutes of the gig available since 1982-83 and its available on YouTube)

Neighbours - 'Backing Vocals - Jennifer & Susan McLean'

New one on me. I just assumed those 'Is it any wonder?'  harmonies were just Mick and Keith.

A quick google search found this  - they're twin sisters who were models.

They also have a credit for 'special merit department' on Roxy Music's 1979 'Manifesto' album.

This appears to be what they're up to nowadays:

Cheers. Listening to it a bit after it came on spotify after midnight and more so today

The Wembley show is better than I thought it would be. Great version of 'Just My Imagination'. Not quite on the level of Hampton' 81 but raggedly glorious all the same.

(EDIT - it seems that 'She's So Cold' is from the 25/6/82 show. They didnt use the butchered 26/6/82 version. The rest of the songs used are from 26/6/82)

Nice to hear the outtakes. I like that version of 'Start me up', notwithstanding the fact that its totally artificial to put new vocals and completed lyrics on a take that's been passed off as being supposed to be a work in progress

Its a Lie and Fiji Jim have long been two of my favourite outtakes even though it was obvious that they couldnt really release them in the form that they circulated in. They've done a good job with them, even though its evident some of the lyrics are new (there's even a reference to 'ebay' which makes it pretty clear  it wasn't written in 1977!)

9 songs and under 40 minutes of music does make you feel a bit shortchanged though, especially as the 8 'new' tracks almost certainly were never worked on or shortlisted for 'Tattoo You' to begin with.  Its basically a collection of leftover songs from 1973-79, some of which they didn't even use for the GHS and SG reissues.  Taking that into account, its hard to imagine where they'll go next with these reissues.
There isnt really much left from IORR or Black and Blue.  There's a chunk of material from ER, UC, DW and VL but there's hardly going to be a demand for a reissue of those records.

Maybe an expanded release covering a period of years (a la Neil Young's 'Archives' or Dylan's recent 'Springtime in New York') is the way to go forward with these

These reissue concepts of theirs is totally skewed as discussed earlier in this thread.

Wish they would simply release these the way the were leaked earlier with the Fully Finished materials release...maybe a new album every 4-6 months would work for me considering the rumored 2 other volumes down the pike...that's like 9 albums in total if all rings true.

The "new" SMU is pretty OK...wish they ALSO released the original or earlier version when it was simply called Never Stop.

I will listen to the rest in a bit while at work.

I would love to hear an UC release in this vane as well.
Not to hijack this thread...but since it was mentioned...

Neil Young + Crazy Horse also released a single today..."Song Of The Season".
And I love Dylan's Spring Time in NY

and i heard that you got a new baby
with an old friend of mine
    he's in the Impiana, he's a billionaire
    you've been totally re-designed

well its a lie, its a lie
its a low-down (dirty, vicious, despicable) lie
don't make me laugh, don't make me cry

all summer long i've been in italy
    tippling down the wine
on the run with a different duchess every night

but my only lover came from antiquity
found her on a building site
she's got no head, she's cut from marble so white

its a lie, its a lie
i'll be questioned by the FBI
i gotta be chic, i'm holding my head, holding it high

i just heard i'm getting married
round about the fourth of july
honeymoon in hawaii, put it in your diary
    don't forget your black tie

well its a lie, its a lie
i swear it on my mother's life
my conscience is clear, i got nothing to hide

i stole an election, took it to a fence
tried to get the highest price
the whole thing is passe, put it on ebay
    shouldve took my lawyer's advice

Interesting seeing the number of streams each of the 11 Tattoo You songs have received on spotify. You could have predicted the top two (although the number of plays for SMU is eye watering) but the third most popular is a bit of a surprise.

    Start Me Up - 367,306,523
    WOAF - 31,577,189
    Heaven - 21,537,601
    T & A - 4,896,504
    Hang Fire - 4,869,082
    Slave - 4,532,300
    Tops - 3,881,874
    Worried about You - 3,171,848
No Use In Crying - 3,019,531
    Black Limousine - 2,253,590
    Neighbours - 2,025,977

(the most streamed Rolling Stones song is (surprisingly) 'Paint It Black' with 636,549,256 plays, almost 200 million ahead of 'Satisfaction')

Of the new songs from the 'Lost & Found' disc, both 'Troubles a comin' and 'Livin' in the heart of love' have already over a million streams, however both have been available for a few weeks now. None of the others have passed 11,000 yet apart from 'Come to the Ball' which is already on almost 165,000 streams

(my edit of a transcription by ChrisM42 at iorr dot org.
even though these are quite different from the "fully finished" lyrics,
i believe these words still tend to support my idea that Ronnie is Fiji Jim)

I’m gonna call up Fiji Jim
Tell him to get on the plane
Tell him to bring his electric guitar
Tell him to get on the stage

Been a hell of week, hell of a month
    Been the strangest year
It’s all gone by in the blink of a eye
There ain’t no time for tears

Yeah, one last chance, one last dance
I got ice in my veins
One last chance, one last gasp
We’re gonna drive the crowd insane

We all call on Fiji Jim
    Call on Steve and Dwayne
Tell him to get on bass, we're gonna bust this place
or else go down in flames

All revved up, four cases of wine
    Snort an ounce of Cocaine
Got a keg of beer, bring it over here
A six pack more of champagne

Yeah, one last chance, one last gasp
We got skin in the game
One last chance, one last dance
    Gonna drive the crowd insane

Yeah, the drums that snap, like a thunder clap
The bass drum mash on the floor
The guitar scream in a feedback dream
    Like you never heard before

    Play superstition, lots of ammunition
    We’re out of cigarettes
There's no intermission, no air condition
    Our cloths are soaking wet

We gonna call on Fiji Jim
Tell him to get on a plane
Tell him to bring his wah-wah pedal
    Drive the crowd insane

Well, he bust two ribs and he bruised his limbs
And took some pills for the pain
He got shaky legs, and his nose it bled
But man he sure could play

I could see you in Foyer Grove
    Trying so hard to impress
You took off your dress, and I’m way out of breath
    Carry me off this stage

Interesting seeing the number of streams each of the 11 Tattoo You songs have received on spotify. You could have predicted the top two (although the number of plays for SMU is eye watering) but the third most popular is a bit of a surprise.

    Start Me Up - 367,306,523
    WOAF - 31,577,189
    Heaven - 21,537,601
    T & A - 4,896,504
    Hang Fire - 4,869,082
    Slave - 4,532,300
    Tops - 3,881,874
    Worried about You - 3,171,848
No Use In Crying - 3,019,531
    Black Limousine - 2,253,590
    Neighbours - 2,025,977

I'm not dialed into new TV shows and movies, but I wonder if Heaven was used in one of them because it is an odd one. Even so called fans don't always know it.

I don't believe it was. Somewhat baffling. I think its a lovely, haunting track but if you'd asked me how it would have ranked in the list of songs streamed from that album I would have bet good money on it being dead last.  Unlike the two above it, its never appeared on a compilation and it's one of only two songs on the album ('No Use In Crying' being the other) which has never been played live.

    1) i know "heaven" has quite a following on youtube. for example, comparing the views for
2018 re-masters on "the rolling stones" official channel: Heaven 646K, Hang Fire 389K,
No Use in Crying 493K. Also: there are two private individuals who put up the audio
9 years ago and have a total of more than 2 million views/listens. And more than
just listens, when i read the comments, i was stunned that there are people who
regard it as their favorite stones track, or favorite track period

    2) its one of my favorites too. and, surprise surprise, i have a theory about the song.
substitute the word "heroin" as the title and voila, the feel of the music and the dreaminess
of the lyrics work PERFECTLY. that is what the song is about, specifically about mid-term
addiction, when the drug does not energize you anymore, like a "silver train", but you've
not yet fallen "down in the hole". you just kinda bliss out, maybe nod out, all your drive
    evaporated along with your pain

Is it me or what? I don't like the mix of the new edition; I had to reduce the bass, lower the volume and modify the equalization, I did not like how it sounds

I still think it is hilarious that TATTOO YOU, essentially, an album that is a collection of outtakes from ~1974-1980, is getting reissued with additional outtakes that didn't even make to the first cut of outtakes...a collection of outtakes with the addition of outtakes of outtakes.

Yeah, the concept is ludicrous. Whatever songs get included, I doubt many (if any) were amongst those under consideration in spring 1981.

Not even anything from the 80's at all, LOL.

Just from my own research and notes I had from the FFSO thread:

    Side C

Living In The Heart Of Love  - 1974
    Fiji Jim  - 1978
    Troubles A’ Comin  - 1972
    Shame Shame Shame  - 1975 or 1978
    DriftAway - 1974

    Side D

    It’s A Lie - 1978
Come To The Ball - ???
Fast Talking Slow Walking - 1972
Start Me Up (Early Version) - 1975ish

any update on when come to the ball was originally worked on?

Voo, if you look on Demonoid, Gonzalo put up an unbrickwalled remaster.

So in effect, the CDs were defective GRRR!!! Thanks for heads up, I'm dissapointed of that production

I like more on Spotify with headphones that on my own audio equipment with the CDs

    A re-release so crappy-sounding, it's inspired three (3) decompression versions on Demonoid.

Listen with earbuds in .mp3, and this will be next:

    OK...Time for my question...

re: Start Me Up (new version)

    Where is this from?
was this really an outtake or something they recently re-hashed and re-worked, over-dubbed, etc?

I know the 1975 "original" version , called Never Stop...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XY8vM_fTXVU

and I have read/heard there were about (supposedly) 20 different versions before they settled on the 1981 single...

But where did this new one come from??

Mick has added new vocals to an old track from 1977. So its a bit of a stretch to describe it as an 'early version'
