Title: Further info on IORR Guy Peellaert cover art
Post by Rev 20 Redlights on Feb 4th, 2021 at 7:06am

1) It seems to be currently accepted that the inspiration for Guy Peellaert's cover art is:

2) And there is at least one source that claims that Guy Peellaert himself confirmed this

3) While I am not disputing that the Hitler photo was likely influential, to me its
obvious, from the color scheme and layout, that a famous 19th century painting
of Czar Alexander's coronation also served as an inspiration

4) With regard to Peellaert's women, I would like to add that they are specifically "vestal
virgins", women of purity who had a priest-like function in ancient Rome, especially for
public ceremonies. I haven't found Peellaert's specific source, although
the ladies appear to be circa 1920, when it was not unusual for women to costume
themselves in this manner for, again, public ceremonies...

5) So, looking at the cover art women again, I'm thinking: Almost certainly sourced
from a silent era film about Ancient Rome. There were quite a few, many made
in Italy and many obscure or lost now...

BOOM!

Quite a find i think:

(in fact, now i think its likely that Joseph Goebbels' propaganda org specifically
staged the Hitler photo based on these classical sources.  Peellaert would have
definitely been aware of all this)

There's another painting of the Stones as Nazis in GP's Rock Dreams book.

6) But what's striking in the Peellaert IORR cover art is how detailed the girls are,
something you couldn't get in a 1920s large group photo. So what Peellaert did,
I believe, to achieve his vision of vestal virgins, was cut-and-paste close-up
photos of Ziegfeld-type dancers, from one of many such shows...

...and so now we have all the inspirations and sources for Peellaert's IORR cover art

THE END

Good night. Sleep tight.

Err. what about - for example - the graffiti on the backside?
Was there graffiti on the Chancellory in 1945?
Was the cover a tease of the Musicland location/year?
Did Jogger/Peallaert ever go to a  'Entartete Kunst' exhibition?
Did Keith learn to keep people waiting from reading about Hitler?
Was the cover a deliberate echo or tease of Brian's humour or ego. And then in 1973 Keith Moo-Moo) mincing around in Nazi costumes?
Were the daancing girls/distrations even an echo of/reference to/tease of Anita

And so forth and etc egtc, if one is in the mood.

Footnotes:

Just how virginal the Vestal Virgins were depended on the Emperor

The pic above is from the coronation of Nero

Like with the "Shine a Light" movie, Nero's girls would often score front row seats...

...and after the show, the girls definitely liked to party, even while Rome burned

And now, a different kind of Roman party, the opposite of a coronation, but with a
similar assembly -- the Emperor Vitellius being dragged through the
streets by the angry populace...

And of course it was the Romans who gave the King of Kings the same treatment

As you probably know, "heil hitler" is just the continuation of the timeless
Roman salute "hail caesar"

Pre-hitler, it was even part of the US pledge of allegiance

Now if you feel that you can't go on
Because all of your hope is gone
And your life is filled with much confusion
Until happiness is just an illusion
And your world around is crumblin' down
Darling, reach out, come on girl, reach on out for me

I'll be there, with a love that will shelter you
I'll be there, with a love that will see you through

coincidences are fun:

In this thread I have made visual references to Hitler, Nero, Czar Alexander,
Emperor Vitellius, and Jesus Christ

The latter three were executed for their crimes, and the first two committed
suicide to escape execution

Now that i know that the inspiration came from Adolf Hitler,
I am all of a sudden very offended

I'm gonna run over to FB and tell everybody.

Also, this post needs to be taken down.

1) come to think of it, it was another fun coincidence that i did this thread right before
the title song became a worldwide news item

2) and now Mick has named his new kitty cat after one of the murderous tyrants
that i said inspired the cover art

via the daily mail "Say hi to Nero, he’s a little camera shy"
