Title: Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Chadwick Boseman's final film, and he's note-perfect, but
Viola Davis is even better. Transcendant. Embodying the blues
to an extent that I didn't think possible by an actor.

The film is not specifically about the blues, but rather
about a small group of people 100 years ago who are creating
it and playing it and profiting from it.

Inside their heads, inside their hearts, in a way that
brings home yet again (sorry, Mick) just how superficial
the scripts for Vinyl and Get On Up were.

Adapted from August Wilson's play, produced by Denzel
Washington. Netflix.

Saw a clip from it on the Graham Norton Show last night when Viola Davis was being interviewed. Looked really good.

Its been a while since a movie taught me new things
about where the best music comes from...

From both heaven and hell.

Denzel talks about the film

Chadwick got his start thanks to a scholarship from Denzel

Ma Rainey always claimed to have invented the word "blues" to
identify a specific type of music. Some quick research seems to show
that this actually might be true. "Having the blues" had been around
since the mid-19th century, but the first written use of "blues" as
a musical form happened in 1912, well after Ma Rainey started performing
