amazing
just after i post the pandemic LA "ride em" vid apparently the stones will (dylan-like) release a new single tomorrow (check out iorr for details) it may or may not be a cover of "ghost town" by the specials but what's amazing is the specials vid has the exact same theme as the ride em on down vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ2oXzrnti4 i'm not a big dylan fan but "murder most foul" is my favorite 17 minutes in quarantine so far followed closely by the stones 5-minute triumph at corona fest i'm guessing "living in a ghost town" will be my new #1 |

Whether it's a big phat stinking ho axe or not (and it would be lovely if it weren't), there is (further?) good news in that Marianne F is out of hosp.
She probably saw the lovely 'You Can't Get Always'Get Whatt You Ponce...', on't telly and thought "F*ck it, nurses. Pack my Coro-Bag & baggage, darlings. I need some of that". Happy day(s?). |

Yeah, I had a winning hand and I overplayed it In other words, Mick outfoxed me yet again 1) I was right that tour sales were not doing well 2) That's why I was right predicting it getting postponed 3) So I was right that's why Mick cooked up the heart stunt 4) But I was wrong that it would take a lot more than that to make the tour ' a success. I thought it would take months more of hype. But that one little "this could be the last time" stunt was all it took to goose sales enough to hit that magic $10 million a show average. So as usual, hats off to Mick. Simply the best. |

Its not a cover of the Specials song, I'm sure

Excellent blend of R&B and reggae, with an atmospheric choral hook. Cries out for a dub version with extended instrumentals and sound effects. But, yes, a good sign, albeit one they had to be directed to by Bob Dylan.
I notice there's been a second Dylan release ("I Contain Multitudes"), so maybe we'll get a B-side to "Ghost Town." |

5 weeks away, yet its already available to stream?
WTF. I think its a very good track. Not sensational but no-one seriously expects something of the level of 'Sympathy for the Devil' or 'Gimme Shelter' from a bunch of septuagenarians - better than I would have expected from the band at this stage of the game and certainly superior to the two new songs that were on 'Grrr' . Sounds very much like a Mick song but obviously there's the usual Stones influences. I like his voice - I didnt care for the way it was going a decade or so ago (see 'Watching the river flow' and some of the 'Exile' reissue tracks) but this is more like it. And the harp playing is stellar - shades of 'Love is Strong'. They all sound in top form. Lyrically? Well it reads like it could have been recorded in the last couple of weeks although that's obviously not the case - unless he re-wrote it a bit and overdubbed things. |

Rolling Stones Drop New Song, ‘Living in a Ghost Town’
Surprise release is their first original song in eight years By ANDY GREENE The Rolling Stones have released the brand-new song “Living in a Ghost Town” to tide fans over until they’re able to reschedule the upcoming leg of their No Filter tour. It’s their first original composition since “Doom and Gloom” and “One More Shot” came out on their 2012 compilation album GRRR!, although they did put out the blues cover collection Blues & Lonesome in 2016. In a new interview with Zane Lowe of Apple Music, Jagger said he wrote the song with Keith Richards over a year ago. “It wasn’t written for now, but it was just one of those odd things,” he said. “It was written about being in a place which was full of life but is now bereft of life so to speak…I was just jamming on the guitar and wrote it really quickly in like 10 minutes.” He changed some of the lyrics to reflect the times. “Keith Richards and I both had the idea that we should release it,” he said. “But I said, ‘Well I’ve got to rewrite it.’ Some of it is not going to work and some of it was a bit weird and a bit too dark. So I slightly rewrote it. I didn’t have to rewrite very much, to be honest. It’s very much how I originally did it.” The Stones have been slowly picking away at a new album for the past few years. Richards told Lowe that this song was recorded at a Los Angeles studio in early 2019. “It’s sort of eerie when suddenly it’s coming to life,” he said. “I mean the ghost comes to life… I had said to Don [Was] about a month or so ago, ‘Hey, this is a time for the ghost town track.’ And then Mick called me and said the same thing and that great minds think alike.” The band hasn’t released an album of new material since 2005’s A Bigger Bang. “I don’t just want it to be a good album, I want it to be great,” Jagger said. “I’m very hard on myself. If I write something or if I write something with Keith Richards or whatever, it’s going to be great. It can’t just be good.” The Stones’ focus in the past two decades has been on touring. Their 2019 No Filter North American stadium tour was an enormous success and they planned on repeating it this summer in markets they missed, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to postpone everything until some undetermined point in the future. “We don’t know when the next tour outside’s going to be,” Jagger told Lowe. “You would imagine that playing outside would be more healthy than playing inside, one would imagine, but you don’t know. And people are saying, ‘Well are you going to be playing in a stadium that’s 40,000 people? You’re going to have 20,000 people in there,’ for instance. But this is all in the realm of conjecture.” The one bit of good Stones news in the middle of all this, however, is that Jagger and Richards have plenty of extra time on their hands now. “We’ve got another five or six tracks and there’s a lot of sort of soul feel about it for some reason without anybody intending to,” Richards said. “Obviously right now we’ve got nothing else to do but write some more songs, right?” https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/listen-brand-new-rolling-stones-song-living-in-a-ghost-town-988880/?fbclid=IwAR2yo4rG_zKJb3CQXmqSgm1vz2fKwCpt8z-NLN787RO37LRxj7QWt205lkY |

Mick in the guardian
“It’s 20 million people lost their jobs completely for something that’s nothing to do with them at all. And also the less money you have, the more worries you have. So for lots of people, it’s really tough. I mean, I have friends and they live in really small apartments in a big city and they don’t have anywhere to go and they’ve lost their job. I’m very, very lucky and I’m very aware how lucky I am, but not everyone’s as lucky as me.” |

Need some more listens but any time Mick is on harp, I'm happy.
It is high time that they use a new producer. The same sound for 25 years is getting a little old. I get that Mick and Keith are the main forces there, but they need a change. |

The Rolling Stones have released their first new single in eight years, Living In A Ghost Town.
The sparse blues track references the coronavirus crisis, with Sir Mick Jagger singing: "Life was so beautiful, now we all got locked down / Feel like a ghost, living in a ghost town." In a statement, the band said the track was initially recorded a year ago in LA but was "finished in lockdown". "We thought would resonate through the times we're living in," Sir Mick said. Speaking to Beats 1 Radio, the singer revealed the track had been written "in 10 minutes" during a jam session last February. "It wasn't written for now but it was written about being in a place which was full of life, and then now that's all bereft of life, so to speak," he told Zane Lowe. "And when I went back to what I'd written originally lyrically, it was all full of plague terms and things like that. "Keith Richards and I both had the idea that we should release it. But I said, 'Well I've got to rewrite it - some of it is not going to work and some of it was a bit weird and a bit too dark'." Richards said the song had been completed "via satellite" before being released on Thursday. "It's sort of eerie when suddenly it's coming to life," he said. "We sort of did it from outer space. But I actually liked the way it turned out. Living In A Ghost Town is the first original song the band have released since two new tracks - Doom and Gloom and One More Shot - featured on their 2012 Greatest Hits album Grrr! Before that, their last album of new material was 2005's A Bigger Bang. "Yeah, it was so long," Sir Mick told Beats 1. "And I think one of the problems I personally have with it is that it's suddenly that you want it to be really good. "So I don't just want it to be a good album, I want it to be great. You know? Yes, I'm very hard on myself. If I write something or if I write something with Keith Richards or whatever, it's going to be great. It can't just be good." he Stones were last seen on the One World: Together At Home concert last weekend, playing together from four separate locations - although drummer Charlie Watts did not appear to have a drum kit in his house. Instead, he banged on flight cases and the arm of a sofa for their rendition of You Can't Always Get What You Want. Reflecting on the current situation, Sir Mick said he was "very aware of how lucky I am." "A lot of people lost their jobs and it's not your fault. It's circumstances completely out of your control. It's not as though I did a bad job or I screwed up on my job and got fired," he said. "And also the less money you have, the more worries you have. So for lots of people, it's really tough. "It's been a horrible time for everyone. But some people worse than others." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-52402376 |

Staggering to think that the Stones have released newly recorded music in seven different decades.
There can't be too many acts in the history of popular music who can claim that - Sinatra is the only one that I can think of off the top of my head (1930's - 1990's) It's infinitely more remarkable when it's done by a band |

As a solo artist Sinatra es 1940's - 1990's, his first album was in 1946, his first recording in 1939 but with the Harry James Orchestra
so... in short... the Stones rules you bastards |

I heard it a couple a hours ago and didn't like it at all. Then I gave myself some time and tried again with a heart full of good will. It sounds even blander.
If a band with three songwriters spends years without releasing anything new and chooses Living In a Ghost Town as an opportunity to show they are still producing good stuff, well... I can only hope it's one of next album's fillers. |

OK...I saw the spam email (lol) and said, "WHHHHHTF?
I have been really heavy getting stuff done for work so I said today, Friday, I would give it a proper listening to...I didn't read anything about it, I didn't read any of the posts on this thread, so some of my comments/questions may have been already stated/addressed...apologies in advance ... I did see somewhere that this was recorded in 3 different location, including "in isolation"...now if they can do this one song that I grade as an 8.5..partially in isolation...WHERE TF is a new album?!? Back to LIAGT... - Was it already recorded (for the oft-mentioned new album)and its just coincidence that the current state of the world compliments the song? - Was it already recorded and just tweaked for the current state? - Was it custom made for the world as we know it today? The song sounds modern...slightly reminiscent of a few songs written since BTB, (SOM comes to mind) but still fresh. I like the change-ups, reggae/tropical beats...bluesy harmonica...the background chanting...all well done without sounding opportunistic or cheezy (ala We Are The World...) Would have been nice if proceeds were to go to some crisis based charity but that is so hard when the entire world is affected as opposed to a particular ravaged area (ex/ Hurricane Sandy). As I said...an 8.5 and thats a solid B for a band who's original output has been meh for the last 15 years Let hope this provides "proof" to them that they can put together 10 songs to release...now more than ever. EDIT: I just read the above posts...glad Mick knows how lucky he is and that he has friends in big cities living in small apts who have no place to go and are out of work, etc...Now, can we please cancel the tour and refund our monies? that's all...now give us an album |

It always feel odd when folk rate great people and their works in a teacher's-style number system.
I hope there were will be a 12"/extended version of 'Living'. Dazza's bass is exquis'. As is all the rest, surely. |

It's really grown on me. Still think they need to change producers after all this time, but it's a solid song which I doubt would have been the first single, but completely appropriate for the times. Very smart marketing move.

One word in the song that especially gets me every time I play it - beautiful
the way MICK sings that word, it has so much expression and is out of this world. Then we all got locked down. |

This song means the band has released a new song in seven decades now. Amazing feat considering how long most bands or even single acts hang around. Got me thinking about what other performers might have done that. Garland, Sinatra, BB King The Who....King I don't think makes it because of the criteria of new song. U2 will likely do it if the release something in the 2030's. The song has grown on me but I wonder if its just because its the Stones and I need something to cheer me up. Reminds me a bit of Rock and Hard Place with a dash of Heaven in the middle. Macca also had a song with a chorus chant kinda like the chant in this tune but I cant put my finger on what song. Stay safe guys!

Duly noted I'm trying, I really want to like it. Mick sounds great, the boys sound great but it's just not there somehow. Mick should have sung it in a slinky cockney ed accent voice- Jagger it up. And the whoah whoahs should have sounded more attached to the song and really bring it on vocals, sounding super cool and memorable not so blah. Should have put the classic Stones stamp there big time. It could have been much better. IMHO... |

The "'alternative video'" is a bit Year 2 or even Year 1 media-studies, perhaps.
But it would be grand if the new album (released before Chrimbo please - unless it's to be saved for a tour and therefore Soup Super' is the yule offering)… sorry,I'm waffling... it woukld be grand if the new album contained 'Ghost Town's original [/i lyrics. The original lyrics(about the aftermath of L'Wren, surely, or at least in part?) should be available sometime somewhere, soonish, surely. Rather than waiting three or four years for it's releaae on bootleggy (Mountbatten). But the released track (and -Kkubricky? - video) will always stand as a cracker-barrel, and meanwhile one keenly hopes for a dubby extended version in June. |

I didn't think much of it at first but now I find myself listening to it over and over. It's a really great tune. Some of the lyrics are sorta meh though, like an uninspired commentary of current events. "Life was so beautiful then we all got locked down." No shit, really? Tell me more Mick. Had the same gripe with doom and gloom and sweet neocon.
But it's damn nice to get a rockin new Stones song. |
