Title: Leeds Roundhay Park 1982 video Post by andrews27 on Nov 30th, 2015 at 11:45pm
I'm glad to have it, but I can't believe how stupidly it was edited. The longer it goes on, the more it's almost entirely in closeups, many of them of faces only, so that you can't see Keith or Ronnie play.
The cameramen couldn't be that dumb, not all of them - it has to be the editor who didn't figure out that people don't want endless, meaningless closeups of musicians' faces in place of shots of them playing their instruments. And forgot that people came to see Jagger work a stage. This should have been re-edited instead of being merely cleaned up for digital - though there they did a good job at least. It's a great show, and a plus is hearing Gene Barge on sax and watching him duet with Bobby Keys. They seem to have enjoyed playing together. |

Problem being that unlike, say, Hampton, which was specifically filmed for a TV and closed-circuit audience, this show was filmed solely for the benefit of the 120,000 people in attendance (a concept that was still in it's infancy at the time). I think you're essentially looking at the multi-cam feed that the crowd got that day - it was never intended that this would be commercially released.

If so - even the punters on the green want to see the fretwork.

Like I said, the longer the concert goes on - from after YCAGWYW onward - the more it's tight closeups on faces, one after the other, ad infinitum. And in the first half you already see too little guitar-keyboard-drum work.
I did some documentary work briefly and got to see live TV production, and I know that a TV/video director editing a live broadcast on the fly has a variety of camera shots to choose from, for coverage purposes and in case he needs to cut away. If the Stones had the original camera feed tapes in good condition, the show capture could be re-edited into something better - also eliminating the 1970s-style pattern wipes between some shots. Eagle Rock could do it for them, but that would cost money. So we're stuck with the live monitor director's version, in which the crowd at the rear watching the tiny above-stage screen can only be reached by big-star face close-ups. This is not so entertaining at home. |

Led Zep worked in AUD footage to make things more interesting in some release I'm not sober enough to remember
Why can't these bastards do that? |

Apart from the sloppy playing all 'round where Knobsworth is concerned, Jagger looks like he couldn't be...ummm, what's the expression? Oh yes, ARSED. |

yes it does look and sound like a precipitous fall from grace from the some girls tour. same could be said of the 75 tour compared to 72. in retrospect it seemed mick had jumped the shark. i recently revisted the hampton set and i enjoyed it and this is only a few months later and if you dont buy it they may not keep the series goin!! |
