Title: So, what do YOU think of metal guitar?
Post by Freya Gin on Nov 27th, 2015 at 5:57pm
Keith's remarks about metal guitar seems to have pissed off some people (which I'm sure pleases him greatly). But I have to agree with him myself and not just because I'm a fan of his guitar style.

I remember in the '90s how many fans were in love with certain metal guitarists because they could play inhumanly fast. People would write into Musician magazine praising so-and-so because they played faster than anyone. They would get a reply of something like, "Does your girlfriend agree with that sentiment? Maybe she could use a Slow Hand, eh?" Innuendo and Clapton references aside, I definitely like a slower guitar much more. Faster and louder is not better to me. Not at all.

With that said, AC/DC are often considered heavy metal and the Brothers Young most assuredly know their way around a fretboard. Angus knows how to play damn fine lead guitar and Malcolm showed us that rhythm guitar doesn't have to be used just to help lay a foundation.

So what's your take? More importantly, have I missed a meta guitarists who actually is good, not just fast and loud?

Aw damn, that poor guitar didn't deserve to be tortured and then destroyed like that!

What are KEEF's remarks about metal guitar?
Personally, I like it, and when I'm in the right mood for it, I love it.

Dammit, I've lost the link. I'll get back to ya soon.

And yeah, that was a nice-looking guitar, Voodoo.

Okay, this: http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/2015/sep/03/keith-richards-blasts-rap-and-heavy-metal/ isn't what I read; it talks mostly about his take on rap music. I can't find the article I read now. Figures! Oh well.

All I can say is that I remember the part about him saying Blacks Sabbath, etc., being a joke. It seemed like he didn't care for heavy metal music in general, but I got the impression that he didn't think much of metal guitar either. Mostly I remember being amused at the outraged responses by readers and knew he was probably happy about that.

Before any more questions are answered, you need to provide where you stand on Emotional Rescue & the Eagles. There is no gray area here, only black and white.

I know one thing:  I hate metal guitar opinion threads.  That's for damn sure.

The Eagles? They actually have a two or three good guitar songs, especially "Those Shoes." The guitar solo in it always made think of a wild animal howling in grief. What's your beef with them?

As to "Emotional Rescue," well, I really just think it's funny. The last time I bought a Stones cd it was on it and I didn't remember it from the title alone. I hadn't heard it since I was a little girl, you see. But I remembered it as soon as I listened to it! What's funny is that I didn't realize back then that it was even a Stones song. It certainly didn't like Keith or Ronnie's guitar, and Mick sang it half of it with that high-pitched, my-underwear-is-way-too-tight style that the BeeGees popularized, and he talked in this cheesy voiceover that sounded like he was high through the rest. It was only when he was scatting that he sounded more like his usual self. So when that song began playing I sat there stupefied for a moment and then just busted out laughing. Not a disco fan, so it's too bad they went that route with that song since I kind of like the lyrics to it. Frankly, I think they meant it as a joke, which many of their fans didn't get.

I got into blues--especially blues guitar--exactly because of people like the Stones, Hendrix, Clapton, etc., talking about how influential blues music was on them. I think that might be the reason I don't like metal much. The blues is all about emotion and takes it time; raw or smooth, it's still very sensual. By comparison, heavy metal feels like a blitz attack by a street gang to me. I was wondering if anyone else who likes the Stones' bluesy-rock guitar also didn't like metal guitar or if it was just me.

Ang and Mal heavy metal? They outright said time and again they hate metal.  Mal's just walking around with his memory reminding thingamajig (NOT a whatchamacallit)  Also, I'll plug my band here since I'm talking AC/DC:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMmulgpiRAw

I'm the singer guy, but talking to me you'd think my throat has a huge tar ball lodged in.

I didn't know that they don't like metal either. It's screwed up that some people over here think of them as a metal band then. I don't know much about AC/DC themselves despite having most of their albums but I'd heard about Mal. He was pretty young for that. I can sympathize greatly as my grandmother had Alzheimer's.

Cool! Whatever you do, don't let yourself get out of practice like I have.
