Title: Black And Blue?
Post by gypsymofo60 on Jul 3rd, 2015 at 1:33am
Why is it that so many people Stones fans included are so averse to Black And Blue? The song list for shows,(what people want to hear) got me thinking about this. It's a great album, it's different yeah! But it's such a groove. Don't forget the roll.

It's probably one of my top 5 Stones albums. First new album I ever bought at 12, in '76, with my paper route money (along with the Faces 'A Nod's As Good As a Wink...', used and with the big fold out poster with the naughty bits).

I love every song on it: the flow, the mix, the texture, and some of Charlies most adroit drumming ever. Wayne Perkins sounds just like Mick Taylor and Woody's playing on "Hey Negrita" is the last time we'd ever hear that tone and wild attack he had with the Faces. Jagger or Richards had said something to him by 'Some Girls' and those Paris sessions...

A clean clear Mobile Studio recording, if there remains such a thing, of the original 10/11 minute 'Hey N'grita' - not least the last five mins - is the cruelest jewel, tucked away in the Stoonz vault, shirley?

Timothy Ries' 'Stones World' version of HN was a fine exploration.

Time soon for a suuper 'Black & Blue' reboot?

How do you quantify this?

I love this album...it is one of the few remasters i bought from UMG.
I have never gotten the vibe (here, at least), that folks dont like it. Admittedly, i dont have "Melody" on my track list as i often delete the one song I find annoying an any album from my playlist (ex/ Flip The Switch...YGMR...and alll but 5 songs on DW)

I am actually going to play it right now and take it to the pool to play today as I man the kegs.

Well at one time there were a few fans even on here who didn't feel it was a real Stones album. They seem to be gone, or less involved with the board. Mr. Yeats, you are about 3 years younger than I, so I congratulate you on being so very astute, and mature with your music purchases at such a tender age, although always a Stones fan since 1964, I loved B&B but, didn't buy it for some 18 months, Oh the shame; I must confess. I bought DESTROYER.
The music press in the States were much kinder to it, but in England they just slagged it. Elegantly wasted! The first time I ever heard that expression in a lengthy article on a sarcastic review of it. I think John Peel, that respected, and very funny Scouse DJ was the only person in Britain who gave it a decent review. It is certainly also in my top five.

If I were to make a top ten list, all of the 70s Stones studio albums would be on that list with LIB, Tattoo You, and Beggars. Black and Blue would be on the lower half, but it's still a fine album. Hand of Fate and Crazy Mama are probably my favorite songs from that record, but the ballads Fool To Cry and Memory Motel are right up there as well. Underrated record in my opinion.

Love B&B....LOVE IT!  Hand of Fate is one of my all-time go to songs by the Stones.  I never tire of cranking it.

Glory be to God. People who actually dig B&B. I'm redeemed.
