Stones lore: Jagger and Mr. Jimmy in Excelsior

In the summer of 1964, a fledgling British band rolled into town for a one-night stand at a suburban dance hall. Not yet the international rock icons they would later become, the Rolling Stones played to an unimpressed group of fewer than 300 concertgoers at the Danceland Ballroom at Excelsior Amusement Park.

When the Stones return to Minneapolis this week for their concert at TCF Stadium on Wednesday, they will receive a far different reception from a wildly enthusiastic crowd in the 50,000-seat stadium.

Gary Reins was in the audience at the 1964 Danceland concert. In a 2014 interview with KARE 11 News, Reins recalled that the event was poorly attended: “It was not a big concert and they (the Stones) were not even well liked. … There was some booing; I don’t think it was big like ‘get out of here,’ but yeah, there was some boing. Like ‘Who are these Beatles wannabes?” or 'What are these guys?' But I thought they were great.”

Reins remembered that the $6 ticket price for the concert seemed high at the time. “Mostly we were used to paying about a dollar and half, so the six dollars may have kept people away,” he said.

Danceland was clearly not a highpoint in the Stones' career, but the Minnesota event deserves a footnote in the history of rock 'n' roll because of a chance encounter between Mike Jagger and a local character named Jimmy Hutmaker.

According to local legend, Jagger had gone to an Excelsior drugstore the day after the concert. While he was waiting to fill a prescription, Jimmy was ahead of him in line, ordering a cherry Coke, but the drug store had run out, so he had to settle for a regular Coke. At that point, Jimmy turned to Jagger and uttered the famous line: “You can’t always get what you want.”

Years later, Jagger used that line as the title of a song, and it became one of the Stones’ greatest hits. Jagger put the drugstore in Chelsea and cherry Coke became "cherry red" soda, but Mr. Jimmy got a mention in the lyrics.

At TCF Stadium, concertgoers will find that ticket prices have escalated substantially since that earlier time at Danceland. Front row seats in the open-air venue are now going for just under $8,000.

“You can’t always get what you want” may or may not be on Wednesday’ program, but many boomers in the stands that night, reliving their youth, will probably remember the lyrics, word for word.

Mick Jagger Visits North Loop Bookstore
By Jessica Armbruster Tue., Jun. 2 2015 at 3:25 PM

Mick Jagger hanging out at James & Mary Laurie, Booksellers (A.B.A.A.)

The Rolling Stones are set to play TCF Stadium tomorrow night. Before they hit the stage for some rock 'n' roll, Mick Jagger decided to enjoy some arts and culture around the North Loop in the Warehouse District of Minneapolis, stopping into James & Mary Laurie, Booksellers (A.B.A.A.) to do some shopping.

The bookshop, located at 250 N. Third St., specializes in rare, vintage, and collectible books. They also carry art prints, and vinyl featuring classical and jazz artists. James Laurie, shown posing in the posted image, recounts his moment with Jagger:

He sings "Its only rock n roll but I like it" but Mick Jagger is not just a singer as evidenced by his knowledge & interest in art, architecture, literature & music during his visit to our bookshop on Tuesday. He is also very generous with his friends. It was a pleasure having him in the shop. As he left he said "think dry" since rain is forecast for his concert on Wednesday evening.

No word yet on what he purchased, if anything. Other reported sightings have included stops to dine at Bar Lurcat and Bar La Grassa.

Oh jeez - they're selling Golden Gophers-coloured merch? (TCF stadium is on the U of M campus).

The Stones, in their business decisions, are not just out of touch and avaricious, they're downright weird.

maybe an update for LD tickets is being configured?
Direct links to TM is fine...I think they may have changed their site since it looks different to me.

That would absolutely suck ballz if LD were set but no one could get to them...

Contract signed less than a week before the show.

Is this the norm in the industry?

We got Moonlight Mile again, which is beautiful live. It poured rain right up to showtime. Keef's rainstick has been working well at clearing the skies just before showtime. I liked Grace Potter on Gimme Shelter.

Great pics - thanks.

Nice touch to invite Grace out for Gimme Shelter.

A setlist that includes both Moonlight Mile and Out of Control ain't too shabby even though it's pretty evident this early in the tour that the notion of them playing even half of Sticky Fingers let alone all of it has been proven to be laughably optimistic

They should have played Out of control instead of doom and gloom, and CYHMK in OOC's spot imo. Doom and gloom kinda sucks live.

Harsh. On the positive side - two songs written in the last 20 years last night.

Was there a blue moon in the sky or something?

Grace sure looks better than her nerdy brother Harry....

Grace was great. Being in these giant stadium crowds, I can see we are not going to get anywhere near the SF songs we want. It is a crowd of casual fans at best, and a good portion of first-timers who just want to check Rolling Stones off their list. The people on the floor around me didn't really come alive till Miss You....and all the warhorses that follow it.

Other cities should be better.  Minneapolis is full of uptight, lame geeks.

Just reading Grace Potter's Wiki-Bio. She seems like the real deal...not a concept or trend like a Katie Perry or  (fill-in-the-blank)...

i never heard of her, she's all woman though, from those pics!! 32 years old and singing with the Stones...

Man, Summers are real busy for me. If I can make it, it will be last minute. I rarely go downtown (see: Atlanta is a horrible city and a dangerous place to live- jb).

No, that's expected on July 31st. However we did have a Strawberry moon a couple nights ago.
:booze

now, getting CYHMK, OOC & MR in the same set...rarer than a blue moon....

I must be the only person on this board that hates OOC. At least Moonlight Mile made up for it.

Wonder what Lisa thinks of Grace singing on "her song?"

Thanks SV for the pics (great as always!), and for the Vikings tongue logo. I could've sworn that was the original logo for the Minn gig, but then all the merch was focused on the Golden Gophers and that awesome loon print. Good to know I'm not completely crazy.

No OOC does nothing for me. Overindulgent wankering. Now Grace Potter is hot and talented!

I'd shudder to think she'd be that arrogant. I doubt she is.

She should be used to it after they got Mary J, Florence Welch et al to guest on it in 2012.

Great a vocalist as she is, its still the greatest song the Stones ever wrote or recorded.

With her or without her.

I'm amazed at the notion (not from you, but from the band themselves and the people who justify the 'greatest hits' shows)  that a band who have played to about 40 million people over 50 years are seemingly largely playing to audiences who, despite being largely middle-aged or older,  have never seen them before (and also, who only seem to own one greatest hits record and who, despite paying outrageous money to see this band they like dont seem to be interested in checking out anything else from a catalogue which has sold about 250 million records)

If what we're told is true, it must be the most unique audience demographic in musical history.

The first one is amazing. We ran into BV in San Diego. For such a high profile online Stones community guy. He really is incredibly low key in person. We just happened to be standing outside the stadium listening to the soundcheck when Bluzdude pointed him out to me. So we went up and said hello and had a brief chat. But, just amazing to think he goes to every single show.
