Title: How come the Stones never played Dance Little Sister live, ever ? Post by steel driving hammer on Feb 6th, 2015 at 10:10am
What a great song with backing vocals by Lisa, Bernard & Blondie while on guitar.
What a great rocker they missed out on with several others never performed live either. |

They played it a few times on the 75 U.S. tour and famously at the El Mocambo in 77.

Because it's a throwaway song that they could write in their sleep. Hell, it probably was written while they were asleep.

As was "Satisfaction". Richards has said many times through the years he thought it would just be filler when they were recording it at RCA in LA. Of course he also famously claims it was written in his sleep. "Dance Little Sister" is a tough as performance and production job. |

Oh I know the satisfaction legend. Little sister just always struck me as uninspired filler. |

"Dance Little Sister" is uninspired filler?
Clearly you have not been hanging out in the right bars with the right chicks. The Hole in the Wall, my favorite gay bar in SF was also a biker bar and this is one of the songs they'd play whenever I got to shaking it. The DJs at that bar were great friends with impeccable taste in music and sometimes I'd just go in the back by the DJ booth with a pitcher and while away a Sunday afternoon dancing. What a fucking highlight "Dance Little Sister" was to pound the floor to on those mindsliding days. Some songs were just part of the ritual, SFTD, Doll's "Trash," "Thunder Road," a bit of Janis here or there for me. There was this tall, lanky black dude named Eric, who lived in freaking Irvine (ew!), but for some reason was up in SF every weekend and he was the singer in a country band and also a COP, yet here he was at the gay bar, drinking pitchers with me and my buddy Riley (we lived around the corner, within crawling distance), requesting all manner of deep cuts off Stones records. He even gave me the live X-Pensive Winos for my birthday one year. He would dance and sing with me and he knew all the words. Sigh. Ahh the Hole in the Wall. I loved you so much. Excuse me, I have to go weep while listening to "Backstreets" now. |

I'll suck the pope's butthole if that girl knows who the New York Dolls are.
Funny story: When I was working at GoPro, there was another copywriter there who I think is about 10 years younger than me? Anyways she's a good kid, but she definitely fancied herself very hip. So one day, we were down in their cafeteria eating lunch and I was rather hungover and somehow, the subject of the Pistols? Or KISS even maybe? came up with some of the other dudes there and I said something about the Dolls and she spoke up, even though she hadn't really been in the conversation, and said "I call bullshit. The Sex Pistols TOTALLY pre-date the New York Dolls" and I looked at her as if a perfectly formed tree had spung, unbidden, from the tip of her nose* and began to cackle. I kinda felt bad later but I couldn't help it, the whole thing was so absurd and she had said it with such authority and here she had been talking about her "music journalism" lo these many weeks. I just said, trying very hard not to be condescending, but probably failing miserably, "No, darling. Go look it up." Later, she came to tell me that the reason she was "confused" was because she had just seen the George Harrison movie and saw that the Beatles had looked punk in their early days, which also made no sense because if anything the Beatles looked like the Clash, not the Pistols. I shook my head understandingly and let her babble on with this retarded explanation of her ignorant outburst. Ahhh. Life is sweet sometimes. (Douglas Adams, Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul) |

Fun stories, as usual, SheRat.
Apropos of not much, the first time I saw the Clash in September '79, the David Johansen Group opened (preceded by the wonderful Undertones from Belfast, who I hadn't heard yet). This was a big deal gig for me and my bro ($7 US!), only my second big gig as a pretty hip 15 year old (guess who the first was, in late '78; no, not the Stones). So we sit in our assigned seats through the Undertones and David Jo (when the Clash came on we were right down stage-right in front of Mick's mic stand; almost got a bump from his pint of gin that he passed out after taking a bump and making a face. Almost got a bump, but peeps were all grabbing for it. It was Gilbeys too, my brand then!). After David Jo's wonderful set, as the DJ music starts, we hear two really loud dudes behind us saying "...yeah, the Pistols are great, but the Dolls could have cleaned up the floor with them". I turn around and it's too huge biker looking dudes - leather vests, mustaches and enormous bellies. I sort of keep listening to their banter as the between set music gets louder; they must have seen this little mulleted jerk tring to listen to their rapping, without fear (rock n' roll was still pretty tribal back then), and they seemed to start talking kinda like they were including me in their loud convo. Always remember that - it seemed so unlikely and so cool and sorta sweet that these big ass roughnecks not only had GREAT musical tastes, but also seemed like they wanted to include this little 15 year old creep in their pontificating. Don't know if they stayed for the Clash (I would assume they did) cause my bro and I bum rushed the stage as soon as we heard Sam Cookes "Chain Gang" start up and the lights go down. Maybe the single best, and influential for me, show I've ever seen. Fook stereotypes! |

Yup. And great photographer Bob Gruen said when he first saw the Dolls in'72 at the Mercer Arts Center he was hanging around outside with a bunch of bikers playing with their knives. Bob got freaked at first when he went inside and saw them, but soon realized they were probably the best R n ' R band he'd ever heard!
Never mind what a couple Lynyred Skynyrd guys said to Syl Sylvain after they opened for the Dolls on their final tour in Florida in '75: "Ya'all boogie real good". And then they all became drinking buddies. (good thing the Skynyrd dudes liked the Dolls and weren't dicks to them, as I reckon the Dolls could have kicked their asses easily in a fight!). |

I wasn't saying it's a bad song. Not even. It's Stones by numbers but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I just meant for that time, they could've probably hammered out five of these a day fairly easily. It's simple and repetitive but it's not terrible. Like that old saying goes... it's only rock and roll but I like it.

WOW! The thread title is blown out of the water bigtime by the 2nd post!!
DLS is a good song...filler, yes, but still good. It is formula. It is very reminiscent of two of my fave's She Was Hot and Let Me Go. |
