The streets of Auckland were rocked this afternoon with a recreation of a music classic.

It's been 50 years since the Rolling Stones were rumoured to have written the song Paint It Black at the Royal International Hotel while on tour in New Zealand.

To mark the occasion, veteran musicians Jordan Luck and Michael Chunn performed the hit in central Auckland today alongside Kaipara College students.

The performance took place on the corner of Elliot Street and Darby Place, near where the hotel used to stand.

Original band member Keith Richards has previously said that the legend that the hit was written in Auckland had a "fine chance of being true".

Auckland Mayor Len Brown was among those in the crowd.

Well that's a good way to have your band get international press!

I love how the singer is like 50 and the rest of them are like 12.
