The U2 singer’s November bike crash in Central Park left him so torn up that he’s not sure he’ll ever pick up a guitar again.

In a lengthy year-end message to fans on the band's website, Bono made his first comments about the Nov. 16 wreck, saying he "blanked out on impact."

"[I] have no memory of how I ended up in New York Presbyterian (coincidentally, the same hospital ROCKSOFF regular, Paranoid Android, was born in) with my humerus bone sticking through my leather jacket. Very punk rock as injuries go," the 54-year-old rocker wrote.

Bono also said he wasn't sure he'd be ready for the band's 2015 tour, which kicks off in Vancouver, Canada, in May and was set to swing through Madison Square Garden for a six-date run in late July.

"I have cancelled every public appearance and decided this missive is all the communication I can manage for the first half of 2015, beyond muttering and singing to myself of course," Bono said.

The Irish rocker broke his left shoulder in three places, shattered his left upper arm, and broke a bone in the orbit of his left eye in the brutal wreck, which doctors said occurred when he swerved to avoid another rider.

Surgeons at New York-Presbyterian needed five hours, three metal plates and 18 screws to knit the mangled frontman back together.

In his New Year's note, composed as a year-end "A to Z" list, Bono kept a light tone about his injuries, musing that he now had the distinction of being the only member of rock 'n roll royalty to have a titanium elbow.

Elsewhere, though, he struck a more ominous note.

"Recovery has been more difficult than I thought... As I write this, it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again," he said, adding that his bandmates "have reminded me that neither they nor Western civilization are depending on this."

"I personally would very much miss fingering the frets of my green Irish falcon or my (RED) Gretsch. Just for the pleasure, aside from writing tunes," he said.

Composing the year-end entry, he said, was an attempt to learn from his mistakes - "the first of which is the discovery that I am not an armored vehicle."

Yet the biggest casualty of the freak bike crash wasn't the singer’s busted face or arm.

"The real injury this year was to my Irish pride as it was discovered that under my tracksuit I was wearing yellow and black Lycra cycling shorts," he said.

"Yes, LYCRA. This is not very rock 'n' roll."

Hot on the heels of a controversial career move which alienates a lot of his fans, he has a mysterious bike crash with people fearing he'll never perform again, eh?

This sounds like a familiar pattern.

I predict he and U2 will soon be secretly recording new songs in a basement in the hills outside Dublin which will be shrouded in mystery, will take on mythical and legendary status and will be released to great acclaim decades from now.

And that in a year's time, he'll come back all reinvented as a redneck, singing in a strange twang and convincing people he invented country rock (just like he managed to convince millions he invented rock n roll and blues in 1987-88)

Over to you, Bobo....

Dublin?
Nope...more like N Korea...just like their Berlin experience (which was thwarted by the fall of the Wall)...but this time they will pull a Dennis Rodman and when Kim Dung Fung decides to open up to the Western world, it will become know that it was Saint Bono and U2's music that did it all...

Bono's had a rough go of it.
His guitar was mostly a prop from the 4 or 5 times I saw them but I wish him a full recovery...hope the bike is ok too...and the pavement...

...not sure what you mean by mysterious...and I agree about the guitar as a prop as stated by previous poster...heck, even Keith does that at times...

Bono, stop using those sunglasses all the time. That's why you crashed.

Seriously, now, I hope he's doing better. [If the story's true; you never know.] There's nothing worse than spending time recovering from a disease or an injury, especially in a hospital. And that is true.

We love you Bono, give us a kiss!!!

If Bono can't play, then U2 will need a guitarist . . .

He wears glasses because he has some type of eye issues and so he wears special lenses.

He isn't known for guitar playing but as MICK uses it as a prop and for song writing, he does need to play it, have it.

He was foolish to take a chance, motorcycles are not to be played around with lightly.

I wish him a complete recovery, but if not, he still has his voice!

Bicycle that broke Bono’s arm given New Year Honour

The bicycle that broke U2 frontman Bono’s arm in 2014 has been awarded an MBE after it was revealed this week that the 54 year-old may never play guitar again.

The bicycle, a Holborn Racer 440, was awarded the prestigious honour for ‘services to musical taste’ in a last-minute ceremony held earlier today.

Family of the bicycle expressed their immense pride at news of the honour, which they claim was completely unexpected.

“It’s such an honour to see a member of the family recognised in this way”, said R. Chopper, the bicycle’s father.

“We never thought he’d ever achieve anything really, not with him being a bike and everything.”

“But to see him make such a positive contribution to world around him gives such a huge sense of pride for me and his mum.”

Bono will never play guitar again
Musical experts said that the bicycle was only awarded an MBE because technically Bono can still sing.

“If it has managed to damage him vocal chords then we’re in ‘Knighthood’ territory,” explained Simon Williams, and expert in the Commonwealth honours system.

Fans have the band have been reassured following news of their singer’s recent injury with the announcement that a 97-hour recording of Bono undergoing physical therapy would automatically be downloaded to all iTunes enabled devices by Friday.

I've actually seen U2 four times, travelling to London and Glasgow in the past to see them. Have no real interest in doing so in the future though.

Nothing against Bono at all. He's a decent enough guy. While I can understand why some people dont like him, I actually think some of the abuse he takes is excessive.

He does make it easy to have the piss taken out of him however - although as his press statement above shows, whilst he does have a huge ego, he's not short of self deprecation either. I hope he makes a full recovery.

The injuries seem a little disproportionate for a bicycle accident, no? Did he swerve into a moving semi? Just landing on the ground did that? I've been in motorcycle spills where I landed on the ground and walked away just feeling stupid and with a bent clutch or something.
