Another legend gone. RIP Joe.

The singer song-writer from Sheffield had a career lasting more than 40 years with hits including You Are So Beautiful and Up Where We Belong.

His agent Barrie Marshall confirmed that he had died of an undisclosed illness.

He said he was "simply unique" and "it will be impossible to fill the space he leaves in our hearts."

Known for his gritty voice, Cocker began his singing career in the pubs and clubs of Sheffield in the 1960s before hitting the big time.

He was propelled to pop stardom when his version of The Beatles' With A Little Help from My Friends reached number one.

His duet with Jennifer Warnes, Up Where We Belong - from An Officer And A Gentleman - hit number one and went on to win both a Grammy and an Academy Award.

He was honoured with an OBE in 2007.

I saw him with Bobby Keys and Nicky Hopkins during the 1977 tour. What a GREAT show, what a great touring band, a dead-drunk touring btw

I saw the A.R.M.S concert in LA. There were many huge names on the bill (Beck, Clapton, Page, Bill, Charlie, etc) but I thought Joe Cocker stole the show and I wasn’t even that familiar w/ his body of work. A couple of weeks later he came into a music store where I was working. I was so touched by his performance of “You Are So Beautiful” @ A.R.M.S that I was still thinking about it, so I approached him, introduced myself, and told him how much it had moved me. He said “My name’s Joe, so nice to meet you” and gave me a hug. He went on to say that he was happy I appreciated his performance so much. He was warm, humble and kind. Rest In Peace, Joe.

I had forgotten about that. I saw the A.R.M.S. concert. But I was so young, I don't remember much of it.
