Merry Clayton Recovering: ‘Gimme Shelter’ Vocalist Seriously Injured In Car Accident
Merry Clayton, perhaps best known as the powerful vocalist whose signature line in the Rolling Stones’ classic “Gimme Shelter” is one of rock music’s most recognizable musical interludes, is recovering this weekend. Clayton was in a serious car accident on Monday. Merry gained a new audience after the release of last year’s celebrated documentary, Twenty Feet From Stardom, which profiled the careers of backup artists to rock icons of the 1960s and 1970s. Among the most memorable scenes from that film was Clayton’s remembrance of when she recorded “Shelter,” called into the studio in the middle of the night. She was pregnant, came to the gig in her pyjamas and with her hair in curlers. Mick Jagger, also interviewed for the film, seems visibly emotional as he listens to the isolated track of Clayton’s voice on “Gimme Shelter.” Check out the video below. News of the accident was made public Friday on Clayton’s official website: “It is with deep regret, but also deep gratitude, that we announce the following about our beloved Merry Clayton. At approximately 3:30 pm Monday, June 16, 2014, Merry was involved in a major automobile accident in Los Angeles, California. Merry sustained severe injuries to her lower body, including major trauma to her lower extremities. We are truly grateful that our dear Merry is still with us.” In addition to her work with the Rolling Stones, Clayton also performed with rock royalty such as Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, and Michael Jackson. She had a solo career as well, releasing three albums of her own. To recall the impact Clayton had on the history of rock, check out this clip from Stardom: http://youtu.be/ChONufP0FEs Twenty Feet From Stardom, which featured not only Clayton but fellow veterans Darlene Love, Lisa Fischer, Judith Hill, Claudia Lennear, and Tata Vega, told the often hidden story about extremely talented figures who do not have the name recognition of those with whom they perform. Clayton told The Advocate at the time of the film’s release how much it excited her to see her story, and those of her fellow artists, on film: “When I saw that film I almost went through the roof… From the first bar, it was just incredible. It’s been a blessing to be involved in such a beautiful, honest film.” Clayton’s manager, Alan Abrahams, was praising her spirit and drive this week. As reported by The Advocate, Abrahams said, “She is beyond feisty. She will be singing again. Her fortitude and her faith and her spirit is such that she’s bloodied but not bowed.” That’s news fans of Merry Clayton are delighted to hear. Merry Clayton, Rolling Stones backup singer and 'Twenty Feet From Stardom' star, suffers severe injuries in car accident
Legendary backup singer and New Orleans native Merry Clayton walks the red carpet at the inaugural Louisiana International Film Festival on April 18, 2013 at the Joy Theater in New Orleans. (Mike Scott, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune) By Chelsea Brasted, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune on June 20, 2014 at 11:47 AM New Orleans-born singer Merry Clayton, whose work with Ray Charles and the Rolling Stones was highlighted in the Academy Award-winning documentary "Twenty Feet From Stardom," suffered severe injuries on June 16 when she was involved in a car accident in Los Angeles. The news was posted to her website in the days following the incident. "Merry was involved in a major automobile accident," the update on her website reads. "Merry sustained severe injuries to her lower body, including major trauma to her lower extremities. We are truly grateful that our dear Merry is still with us." Additional details were not yet available. Clayton's manager declined to comment at this time. Clayton was born a preacher's daughter in Gert Town in 1948, where music became part of her way of life. She has sung the blues throughout her life, notably appearing onstage and in-studio with some of the greats: Neil Young, Ray Charles, the Rolling Stones. Last year, her contributions to modern music were recognized in "Twenty Feet From Stardom," which won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, alongside fellow backup singers including Darlene Love and Tata Vega. NOLA native and backup singer Merry Clayton talks 'Twenty Feet From Stardom' (video): http://video-embed.nola.com/services/player/bcpid1949030309001?bctid=2310666289001&bckey=AQ~~,AAAAPmbRMTE~,BWCCSzT6s9kk8xlYY9rVrKw3SC5F9_7L In his review of the film, Scott said: "The ladies of 'Twenty Feet,' however, prove that none of them should be underestimated. They've got voices, they've got personality in spades, they've got skins on the wall -- and they'll have, and hold, your attention in Neville's film. That's because they also all clearly harbor a deep love for singing -- and so even if they've not been invited to drink at the well of superstardom, they're still happy to be getting paid for doing what they love. "And that is something worth singing about." Here is the statement, posted to Clayton's website, in full: It is with deep regret, but also deep gratitude, that we announce the following about our beloved Merry Clayton. At approximately 3:30 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2014, Merry was involved in a major automobile accident in Los Angeles, California. Merry sustained severe injuries to her lower body, including major trauma to her lower extremities. We are truly grateful that our dear Merry is still with us. She has a long road of recovery ahead and we thank you all for your prayers as we link arms together with faith and the Lord's strength for her rapid healing. For all that know her personally, and those that have been blessed by her God-given talents, please know that her spirit is very strong and her faith unwavering. Her voice is not silenced and His praises continue to be on her lips. http://www.nola.com/music/index.ssf/2014/06/merry_clayton_rolling_stones_b.html |

Wow. I don't think I've ever seen Mick let his guard down albeit very briefly. Sending prayers and healing thoughts to you Merry. Your haunting vocals on Gimme Shelter are one of the reasons it remains my favorite Stones song. |
