Title: Help with Jagger song, please?
Post by sirmoonie on Jan 17th, 2014 at 8:32pm
I was flipping channels and landed on Discovery channel watching Obsession: Dark Desires, because I caught Jagger singing the following (I think):

This is what I want
'cause I know you're mine
It's alright
(background: It's alright)
It's all good
We're doing things I never thought we could.....

Anyone know what song this is?  It's fast rocker, sounds post 1990s from his voice.

Thanks for any help.  I can't find answer despite various searches.

Here is the Leviathan:

I'd really appreciate it if someone would help with this.  It's driving me nuts.  I guarantee it was Jagger singing.  Can't imagine its a Stones song, as I believe I've heard everything they've done by this point, including boots.

I don't recognize it from Jagger's 4 solo albums.  It's likely to be some one-off deal he did.  A movie?  Guest appearance on someone's album?  I checked Superheavy and Alfie, and couldn't find it.  If you can help with this, I'll return the favor.  Get you straightened out.

Here is Nebuchardnezzar, when he was among the animals.  Poor bastard.  God really did a number on him.

Tried Shazam too, but the audio is too low to hear.

Programs broadcast on commercial cable channels do not use music by top artists, because it costs too much to license it.  Check out the Biography show documentaries on Stones, Zep, Springsteen, etc. - it's all fake riffs using the chords from popular songs by these artists.  What you heard was somebody ripping off Jagger for low royalties.  It takes monied networks (HBO, Showtime) not dependent on outside advertisers to license songs by top artists.

Thanks!  I had kind of wondered if it was some kind of tribute band deal.  I will keep searching and post it when I find it.  if it is an imitator, you would not believe how well this guy can do Jagger.

That is so obviously fake Jagger.  And "Guys who know their shit" know how the movie and TV business works in terms of licensing and usage.

Send that clip to the Stones organization and watch them eat up the profits from that show like they ate up The Verve.  Tom Waits and Bette Midler each sued the makers of TV commercials for using sound-alike voices, and won.  Subsequent filmmakers and TV producers had to abide by these legal precedents, just as recording artists had to observe the decisions in the rap record sampling cases.

Title: Re: Help with Jagger song, please?
Post by sirmoonie on Jan 25th, 2014 at 7:24pm
There is strong mental bias toward believing it is not Jagger because the song is not one we've apparently heard.

It's not "obviously" fake Jagger, or as a boot licking worshipper of the Stones, I would know for a fact that it's fake, and I don't know that for a fact.  Sure the fuck sounds like Jagger to me, although I admit the frequency discrimination and bandwidth of my hearing is below average.

I'm told by my very knowledgeable friend that recorded it from OnDemand for upload to youtube, that it sounds even "more" like Jagger when the audio quality is better.  That person is convinced its Jagger, and like I said, very knowledgeable.  She almost romped with Jagger once, circa 2003.

Title: Re: Help with Jagger song, please?
Post by andrews27 on Jan 25th, 2014 at 10:26pm
I'm sorry, but why would Jagger - who ate The Verve alive and never bothered to spit them out - allow that song to be used in that show for the shit price that that network could pay?

People who make higher budgeted shows and films can't afford to license better songs in the original artists' renditions - they accept the cheaper rate to license a cover version, not the $tar performance.  It's even cheaper when the $upporting musicians are not those on the record$.

Send it to the Stones organization.  Let the lawyers decide.

I understand and appreciate your points, but there are a lot of assumptions in there.

We're not talking Start Me Up here.  If its Jagger, its so obscure, we don't even know it.  Much less $$$ to license.

It doesn't have to be Stones property either, it could be some Jagger project, of which I'm sure he has dozens.  Who knows what rights he retains - does he own Ruthless People?  State of Shock?  Right to license background vocals to You're So Vain?

The show/movie is made by October Films UK, and we have no idea how much money they have or don't have.

Also, "voice misappropriation" is a tort limited to California, I believe.  But wherever it is, the existence of it as a cause of action, factors toward this not being a Jagger knock-off.

Yes, but see - No one would pay anything to license obscure Jagger.  Filmmakers license songs for their appeal and their associations.  Nobody needs obscure Jagger playing on a car radio in a soon-to-be-forgotten TV show, to be noticed only by Stones fanatics.

That's imitation Jagger (and imitation Stones also), thrown on a soundtrack by people whose only motivation is a paycheck.  The smaller the licensing budget - the bigger and the more secure their paychecks are.

I looked the show up on IMDB, and nobody cares enough about it to even title and synopsize the episodes, much less provide Trivia info on the great, obscure Jagger song smuggled into one episode.

I'll take pictures for yinz, and maybe bring back some treats.  I may even post live from historical Stones sites.  I have that technology now.

I'll look for it.  I was thinking more like if you guys needed any Smarties, Bovril or Crunchie bars.  Because drugs in England have always been poor quality to me.  Despite its rep, its not a drug town.  Other than alcohol, of course.  Which happens to be my favorite drug, and why London and me are the greatest combo the overzealous Lord has ever manufactured.

I like the fact that it NOT being Jagger makes just as
little sense as it being Jagger...

Why go to the trouble and expense of cloning him when
it has nothing to do with the plot and can not possibly
be of any commercial advantage to this low budget series?

But I've been fooled before!
Where are our experts?

Title: Re: Help with Jagger song, please?
Post by Rev 20 Redlights on Feb 4th, 2014 at 4:56pm
Here's another possibility, and how real it is at this
point in time seems to be in dispute, so I wouldn't
take the following report at face value (I think it's
investment hype). But there's an intermediate step
that would be easier, rather than completely
generating the voice with an algorithm, instead just
using that algorithm to tune or refine the voice of a
skilled human imitator...

"Garianno Lorenzo’s Voice Cloning Technology Set For
Release. Giant Media is preparing to release
revolutionary voice cloning technology. The technology
allows users to create mathematically identical voice
prints of any person’s voice by using a short audio
sample to create a unique algorithm. Following the
generation of the algorithm, text input can then be
translated into speech or song with the help
of pitch inflection. Throughout the testing process, the
algorithms generated by the software have fooled the
human ear and forensic audio specialists. Speech tests
have been conducted using former U.S.presidents and
other public figures to create conversations that never
actually happened. Additionally, using Michael Jackson
and John Lennon as an example, Garianno Lorenzo
initiated a new musical project that combined the
voices of the two industry legends in a completely
original duet with new words and a new tune. The
differences between their real voices and the computer
generations were not discernible to the human ear. "

So what we could have here is an ambitious
up-and-coming sound/music person at October Films,
testing out some new software, showing off and trying
to make a name for themself. If that's what it is, I'm
definitely impressed.

A number of us have done all kinds of searches. There
are no songs known with those lyrics. By anyone.

Footnote: The docudrama occurs in 1980. The
character is portrayed as hearing it on the radio, and
singing along, because she's in a good mood, as if it
was a favorite hit song of hers. They could have easily
used a pop "you are my sunshine" or anything out of
copyright, so why didn't they? They could never afford
even Chris Jagger (because Chris would need Mick's
approval on a Mick song for sure). The show is
extremely low-budget.

mh, you can tell how difficult this call is by how few
here are showing their hands...

What i still want it to be is some bizarre guerilla
marketing for something new. Or more likely old/new,
like a bonus track on re-released Sticky Fingers. That's
what it most sounds like to my wishful ears, something
re-worked from approximately that period, something
Leon Russel-y, that didn't get lyrics til recently.

But what I'm afraid it is is just some young brilliant
computer-augmented trickster making a fool out of me.

If you think they can't process vocals to this extent
in the studio, then just listen for a few moments to
this very famous vid of Britney's unprocessed LIVE
vocals (this version probably won't last, all versions
of this get taken down)...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FU3aAEayUE&feature=player_embedded

So if they can enhance Britney's live vocals by 90%
or so without it being noticeable to the audience,
what would stop a Beyonce or Bono or Mick Jagger from
enhancing their vocals by 25 or 30% ? Or someone
auto-correcting bum notes on the guitar?

Nothing. And with proper encryption on the non-processed
signal, they would never face embarassment like Britney has.

I've noticed on the U2 forums all these comments about
how happy they all are that Bono's voice is suddenly not
so thin or nasal-y. Hmmm. As a Stones fan, that sounds
familiar.

So the same argument applies here as in the tapping into
the secondary ticket market as another revenue stream
for the artist. If they can do it, and it is not illegal,
and audiences (passively) accept it, why not?

I mean, did you hear Bob Dylan's speaking voice on that
Chrysler Super Bowl ad? Does anyone really think that was
not hugely processed?

(So if you want to be really cynical, a good tactic would
be to turn off Keith's auto-correct for the first few
intentional bad notes of Start Me Up at Hyde Park,
then turn it back on. Those few bum notes, processed
out later, would make all the live processing much less
apparent. Those few bum notes would make all the
rest of his playing seem much more authentic.)

Just heard it for the first time.

Not Jagger. Bloody good imitation, though and obviously recorded to make the listener feel like it COULD be him.

Then again, as its not a Jagger/Stones song, there's not an original to compare it too, so the likeness sounds even more impressive.

Anyone remember this one from the mid 80s? Forget the visuals for a second - when this first hit the airwaves, there was a bit of speculation at the time that Mick may have released it under a pseudonym. Especially when you consider the obvious link to him from the name of the band

The lead singer, Steve Elson, ended up in a tribute band called the Counterfeit Stones who I saw a few times.

Just heard it for the first time.

Not Jagger. Bloody good imitation, though and obviously recorded to make the listener feel like it COULD be him.

1) NOBODY could imitate Jagger that well. If its an
imitator, their vocal has been processed with a
Jagger-derived algorithm.

2) These algorithms, which break down an artist's
voice into every single tone, overtone, harmonic, etc,
are the brave new world we're entering right now.
It will soon be possible, if its not already, that you will
be able to take even a poor imitiation of Jagger, and
process it to virtual perfection. Including live, as it
happens.

3) But for sure at this point, corrective auto-tuning,
which is somewhat less sophisticated, is now
everywhere, on virtually every recording and live
performance. On the U2 forum, I've been kinda
impressed that the hardcore there seems quite
accepting of the idea that Bono could only sound
as good as he does on their new song with tuning/
processing. For me, it was listening to the dance
version of Doom And Gloom, where Jagger's voice is
isolated, virtually acapella, that convinced me that
he's using it too, including for his live vocals. And Keith
even to a greater extent.

You don't think so? Here's what you should read:

http://www.theverge.com/2013/2/27/3964406/seduced-by-perfect-pitch-how-auto-tune-conquered-pop-music

Excerpt:

"Then Mike Auto-Tuned two versions of our song:
one with Cher / T-Pain style glitchy Auto-Tune,
the other with “natural” sounding Auto-Tune.
The exaggerated one was hilariously awesome –
it sounded just like a generic R&B song. But the second
one shocked me. It sounded like us, for sure. But an
idealized version of us. My husband’s gritty vocal
attack was still there, but he was singing on key. And
something about fine-tuning my vocals had made them
sound more confident, like smoothing out a tremble in
one’s speech."

Soon, up-and-coming singers, as a part of their
art, are going to design (and copyright) a completely
natural-sounding algorithm for themself that is at the
same time as distinctive and recognizable as Howling
Wolf or Ronnie Spector.  And you'll never know the
difference. Because that algorithm will be built right
into every microphone they use.

Not Worried Im just very curious
about no one "hear" knowing about this "Stones" song, is it or isn't it not Jagger?
Do my Gods have clay feet kinda thin.
When this stuff happens I go with the local guru Stones expert
the great one Gaza
but would love to hear from others!
I like to hear what the pdog got to say.
I find this stuff very interesting.
I'm a conspiracy nut!

I once had an algorithm that I thought would never go away...

1) I skimmed this doctoral dissertation from way back in
2007, "Spectral Processing of the Singing Voice"

http://www.tdx.cat/bitstream/handle/10803/7542/talm.pdf;jsessionid=743098388F10031604882303BC19020D.tdx2?sequence=1

From the "conclusions" section:

"Singing voice processing itself is a field which does
not lay anymore in the scientific community but has
mostly all migrated to the industry... (Currently) able
to recognize, describe and understand lead voices and
vocal harmonies inside a complex sound mix. New
technologies should also be able to mold and adapt the
sung content to whatever new shape and support is
required... From song analysis, we should be able
to remix the lead voice inside the song, change the
melody or / and the lyrics of a song, or even, change
the singer we want to perform that song...

So my guess is that some of these technologies are
already out there, although not yet generally available
like Auto-Tune is. It may be even be that there are
issues of national security that limit distribution, for
now. Some people say that Hollywood already has it
and uses it occasionally to change dialogue in post-
production.

2) As far as I can determine, the following is the
(commercially available) state of the art as far as a
100% synthesized singing voice. "Memory" from "Cats"
by the anime character Kaito, one of a roster of
vocaloid singers who have had hits in Japan.

Impressive!

Tim Summerhayes is one of the principals at RedTX,
which has "in-house facilities to take any audio through
all stages of post-production. Whether that be mixing and
repairing a performance or editing and dubbing a movie
soundtrack, we have the expertise and kit to make it
happen with the minimum of fuss and bother."

Tim Summerhayes and RedTX were working for The X Factor
when the show had its mini-scandal involving favoring
certain contestants over others through the use of
Auto-Tune...

And who was the Recording Engineer on Sweet Summer Sun,
credited on the same screenshot as Don Was and Bob
Clearmountain?

Yep. Tim Summerhayes.

(RedTX the company also receives a credit towards
the end)
