Here's the source on Keith, the others are easy to place
in England at the moment...

http://rzepela.com/undercover/current/msg20166.html

Combined with Mick's off-hand comment in one of the
recent interviews, that he was just finishing off
writing some songs at the moment, its a pretty
obvious wish that a quick recording session is
happening, with hopefully a new single or EP for 14.

Havent heard anything to suggest they're working.

However, had they accepted the invite they would have been playing the Nobel Peace Prize Concert this week.

Instead, Morrissey is topping the bill.

There's a person named "aruru" who posts on Shidoobee
who I think still has a bit of a personal relationship
with Keith. Here's how she responded on a similar
thread, and my follow-up comment...

aruru: Keith said that recently Mick called him
and said they'd better get in the studio very soon
,
I took it to mean sometime in December.

revvy: Hmm. Interesting way to put it, as if there was
a deadline... Wonder if this has anything to do with the
new copyright law in Europe that says a track loses
copyright protection if it reaches 50 years old and hasn't
been released. So far, both Dylan and the Beatles have
been forced to release tracks because of this law, so it
seems likely the Stones will be next...

I doubt any copyright laws will effect any releases they have planned… The really old BBC stuff they released was almost 50, but stuff that will get deluxe treatments would most likely be big four and beyond… the unreleased stuff from Aftermath, Majesties ect.. is pretty much a small amount and heavily bootlegged. While we know they recorded tons of stuff in the seventies that got stashed away.

Yeah, Dylan has released limited edition boxed sets of 1962 and 1963 material (much of it already available songs, it should be said) and his debut album has already been reissued in multiple formats as the copyright had expired.

Its not something that'll affect the Stones TOO much though as they didnt release anything they'd written until 1964 and they were still for the most part a covers act until 1965.

Not sure why that would make them go into a studio though. There's a lot of very vague interpretation in that comment above, both in terms of dates and the meaning of 'better get into a studio'. its as likely to mean 'I/we want to' as 'we must'.

As far as I'm aware that 50-year copyright law is going to change in the next year or two to 70 years.

So then, G, is this just an issue of author copyright,
and not performance copyright as well?

And I think the "studio" possibility is relevant because
you might go into a studio to tart up tracks a bit before
their release

I think its worth mentioning that surprise albums seem
to be something of a current trend. First there was
Bowie, then just the other day Beyonce without
any warning dropped an entirely new 17-track album,
complete with 17 videos! And now you have this
sudden Beatles obscurities release...

This is one time I think we can all agree that we hope
the Stones jump on a trend.

I dont know, but I'd imagine publishing royalties are more a factor.

Re: the second bit. There's an expanded Sticky Fingers release on the cards for 2014 - it was already delayed due to the Hyde Park releases - so I'm sure, like Some Girls/Exile, there'll be some studio tidying up to do. Of course, they dont even need to be together to take care of that anyway, and if the last two are any yardstick, most of it will probably be done by Mick. (They may have even done this already as it's original release date was meant to be Nov/Dec 2013)

when do you think the SF dlx is going to drop?
would they release that, possible new songs or album and tour?

I dont think theres a prayer of a new record any time soon.

No idea about a release for SF deluxe. As it was supposedly on the cards for late 2013 until a couple of months back, I'd imagine its close to being completed.

Actually it seems this change only applies to
performance rights. Publishing seems to have
gone to 70 years whether or not any performance
was ever issued.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_law_of_the_European_Union

So if this interpretation is correct, this moment
represents a unique opportunity for somebody like
the Stones to make some money off of things that are
perhaps sub-standard and not-commercial-enough
without them getting any kind of negative publicity.
The government made them do it!

How could Jagger let such a moment pass by?

No physical album of course is possible by the end of
the year, but now I think an Itunes release before
New Year's is a better than even shot. And probably,
like with the Beatles, the tracks would only be available
for purchase track by track. It would not be an "album".

But, even though its not probable, why not hold out hope
that it is issued as an Itunes album, with one or two new
retro-sounding tracks for the new mini tour?

Hey, this is a fun game! Maybe one of the tracks
they're gonna release is a cover of this one, by one of
their heros. Hence the otherwise unacceptable tour
name...

Perfect Stones lyrics, you have to admit...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3hzYRVAkUs

Correction, a song by TWO of their heros! Here's
Little Richard's cover...

1) "Settin the woods on fire" has also been covered by
Keith buddy George Jones, rockabilly pioneer Johnny
Burnette, and very relevantly in 1960 by AUSTRALIAN
rock pioneers Johnny Rebb and the Rebels. If Australia
is plagued by bushfires over the next few months, the
Stones will be able to say, "Hey don't blame us, blame
your own Johnny Rebb."

Merle Haggard tells this funny story:
"Hank was on the road, and they stopped at this Mexican
joint. There wasn't a rest stop for miles so Hank went
in the woods and took a shit. He said, 'I'm setting the
fucking woods on fire!' That was the hottest godamn chili
I've ever seen!' Before they'd driven another few miles,
Hank had a song."

2) Very importantly, remember this part of the tour
press release: "The setlist will feature classic hits
including “Gimme Shelter,” “Paint It Black” and “Jumping
Jack Flash,” along with a couple of unexpected covers.

Jackpot!

So, based on the evidence presented, I think we can all
agree that this is what is about to happen, if you're
very good boys and girls. Before the end of the year,
there will be an Itunes release of a new album entitled
"Settin the woods on fire" which will mostly consist
of early 1960s tracks under loss-of-copyright threat
but will also feature a new cover of the title track
based on Little Richard's 1971 version (which was itself
Stones-influenced, LR also covering Brown Sugar on the
same album). Then sometime in the new year you'll be
able to buy a physical super deluxe version...

Now, c'mon, really, do i really think this is what is
just about to happen?

Does Hank Williams shit in the woods?

The Beatles 'bootleg' recordings from 1963 gets an official release next week, exclusive to i-tunes.

http://www.nme.com/news/the-beatles/74378
http://ultimateclassicrock.com/beatles-bootleg-recordings/

Much more accessible then than the two Dylan releases. The 1962 Copyright Extension Collection had a limited edition release of about 500 I think, and the 1963 one that came out last month is, I think, vinyl only and in a similarly small quantity.

The copyright expiry applies to previously unreleased takes from the sessions as well.

So, considering the Stones did some studio recording in 1963, the copyright on this material would surely expire on 1st January 2014. Likewise with the BBC radio sessions they did that year. Their October 1962 demos would already have expired.

This is what a Stones' 'Copyright Extension' album could potentially consist of :

Either that or his library has gone digital to avoid any costly pre-tour tumbles.

Recording studio Keith back again, in this new short
holiday greeting vid. Santa Mick joins him this time,
apparently intending to give the gift of music (look
over his shoulder). We can only hope!

Or band pressies, pre-Mustique? - so more likely it's a small, tasteful cubist portrait on canvas by Pickarsehole, shirley?

The studio setting certainly seems to suggest they've been enthusiastically twiddling knobs, at the v least.

Nice touch to give us a lil snatch of 'Winter' before popping off to Mustique.

Happy gaze!
