Mick Jagger Praised for Secretly Helping Punk Rock Legend

In a recent interview, the legend that is John Lydon revealed an interesting tidbit concerning Sir Mick Jagger. It turns out that while Sex Pistol Sid Vicious was awaiting trial for the murder of his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, Jagger stepped in the pay the legal fees.

In the fall of 1978, Vicious was charged with the murder of Spungen, who was found dead in the room she and Vicious shared at the Chelsea Hotel in New York City. According to an interview with Lydon in the Daily Mail, “Mick Jagger got in there and brought lawyers into it on Sid’s behalf,” he said, “I don’t think Malcolm (McLaren,Sex Pistols manager) lifted a finger. He just didn’t know what to do.” Lydon then adds, “For that, I have a good liking of Mick Jagger.”

Vicious himself would die four short months later of a heroin overdose. “Nancy Spungen was a hideous, awful person,” Lydon continues, “Her death is all entangled in mystery. It’s no real mystery, though. If you are going to get yourself involved in drugs and narcotics in that way accidents are going to happen.”

While the punk movement in general, and the Pistols in particular, had a subtext agenda of dismissing all that came before them, Lydon admits he has nothing but great respect for Jagger. “There was activity behind the scenes from Mick Jagger, so I applaud him. He never used it to advance himself publicity-wise.”

Thanks Vood.  Voogie Boogie.

This certainly puts a different shades on things.  A lot of new perspectiveness.   I'm not saying it's a sea change in how we perceive the Stones and our environment, but it will give pause and new understanding.  That's all I'm saying.

If true, very cool; but I remain skeptical.

Well, someone paid the goddam bills.  Do you have any evidence it wasn't Jagger?

That's cool.  Lydon doesn't have any reason to lie about it all at this stage.  Good on Mick.

I have heard this from other sources… Jagger has been rumored to be selfless and altruistic before...

Doesn't this make Jagger a liberal, though?

If anyone kills the Eagles, I'll pick up the legal tab.  Get you Flea Bailey type.

Why is it considered a good deed to pay the way for a guy accused of stabbing a woman to death?  If I send OJ ten large, do I get a bunch of attaboys?

Good Point, I was thinking Innocent until proven Guilty
I'll guess the same
response is still valid in the OJ response.
I'm out of the discussion not knowing the details of the
legend.
Still think Jagger is a class  act.

Jagger is a class act.

I wasn't referring to you, Roy.  More the sentiment in the article.  And yes, I strongly believe in right to a defense and the presumption, when the government accuses.

It's only through the tireless work of half a dozen public defenders that I've been able to get away with all the stuff the goddami liberal government has tried to pin on me.

Yes I am in Total Agreement with
questions about  "the sentiment in the article'
But I still feel i need to take myself out of the discussion, not knowing the first think about the murder, other than it happened, he said he did than he said he can't remember.
Or even if there is validity to the "help"

Did Spungeon rebuff Jagger's amorous advances?   I mean, this is exactly the kind of sordid fucking stuff we don't need at this juncture.  I'm fucking goddam tired of it.

Lydon said this around the time of the Glastonbury show. Got a weird feeling about it though. Misogyny and all that. But you never know. Jagger knew McLaren, knew he was a shonky bloke, and I bet he took an interest in the band that were the new "bad boys". Saw how hyped they were and maybe a bad feeling it was all falling apart (which it was). And I assume he was living in NYC at the time too. Publicly Lydon & co hated everyone, but Jones & Cook were huge WHO fans, Jones in particular. I believe they were the inspiration for "Who are you".

What was the story with the case? Is there doubt about him killing her? I've seen a few documentaries on tv about it and it did seem like he killed her.

So in my mind, Jagger helping him isn't too cool at all.

Well he was never convicted, so naturally there's doubt.

There was talk of a suicide pact that went wrong, Sid stabbing her accidentally while stoned out of his brain (he remembered nothing afterwards) and that she was murdered in a robbery by drug dealers whilst Sid was unconscious (there was a considerable amount of money missing from the hotel room afterwards)
