Title: Jimmy Page solo vs Robert Plant solo... Post by steel driving hammer on Sep 27th, 2013 at 11:59am
I think we or a fair number of us agree that Zep is our #2 band, then maybe Dylan.
I think Jimmy's Outrider is better than all of Robert's albums in terms of low down bluesy grooves. Also, The Firm's album w/ the song Midnight Moonlight which could be Stairway to Heaven #2. Here it is, listen to when it gets loud (when Jimmy comes in) then soft and deep. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB04NpFx-3Q A great forgotten song... |

Jimmy Page is a really great guitarist. I do admire him for
that. And he's a very good producer as well. But he is NOT an originator. Dylan is. |

I've seen the Firm on both of their tours.
The Firm - the only band I ever saw that did 2 encores with a total of one song. Every Body Needs Somebody To Love, parts 1&2. |

LED ZEPPELIN MOVIE IMAGINES WHAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED TO THE BAND’S STOLEN $200,000
by Jeff Giles October 3, 2013 http://youtu.be/5BSxkoLsq_4 On July 29, 1973, the members of Led Zeppelin received a nasty shock when they discovered that their safety-deposit box at the Drake Hotel — a swanky New York City venue where they’d been staying while they were in town playing Madison Square Garden — had been robbed of $200,000. The theft made headlines, not just because of the large sum and superstar victims involved, but also because of the mysterious circumstances surrounding the incident. Police could find no signs of tampering on the box, and the band’s tour manager claimed everything was where it should have been when he checked it the previous morning, so without any leads — and the Zeppelin camp’s somewhat lackadaisical approach to pressing the investigation — the case was never closed. Now, a pair of filmmakers are turning to crowdfunding site Indiegogo to help them turn their short film ‘Fleecing Led Zeppelin’ into a full-length movie that imagines a possible aftermath of the theft, starting with one man’s fortuitous discovery of a bowling bag stuffed with decades-old cash. It’s an interesting premise, but an expensive one, which is why the duo is seeking $35,000 to help round out the budget. “The Drake Hotel is long gone,” explain screenwriter Jackie May Tolliver and director Gabe Tolliver on their campaign page. “There’s no sign of the money, but somebody took it. Was it manager Peter Grant? Road manager Richard Cole? Housekeeping? It’s a fan movie, for lovers of history, or for folks who just want to know what happened to that money. We need your help to finish the film — we need $35,000 for editing, sound design, music rights, DVD, advertising and film festivals, which ain’t cheap.” You can check out the ‘Fleecing Led Zeppelin’ trailer at the top of this post, and chip in if you’d like right here. And if this works, who knows? Maybe we can get a whole series of movies about unsolved rock mysteries, like what really happened to Bobby Fuller or where all of Van Halen‘s brown M&M’s went. http://ultimateclassicrock.com/fleecing-led-zeppelin/ |

If Peter Grant had had any brains, he'd have been wearing that $200K, just as if he were in London.

I have to go with Plant. There are many great guitarists but not as many with a spicy voice like Plant. He's every bit as good as MICK, maybe better, because I don't think MICK can belt out Whole Lotta Love the way Plant can, and I've seen him recently, he's still great. And he's also still hot, unlike Page who looks way older!

Yeah but Page has the guitar groove and is a powerhouse of a guitar player, and (like Keith) a great strummer. All Plant can do is sing or belt out a few powerful high notes, that's all. I like The Firm a lot too actually, especially w/ Paul Rodgers singing. |

ROBERT PLANT DISCOVERS NEW, UNRELEASED LED ZEPPELIN SONGS
by Dave Lifton October 18, 2013 Matt Roberts, Getty Images Outside of the long-running debate about Led Zeppelin getting back together to record some new material, the next best thing could possibly happen. Robert Plant revealed that he has discovered some previously unreleased material from the group that could soon see the light of day. “I found some quarter-inch spools recently,” he told BBC 6. “And there’s some very, very interesting bits and pieces that probably will turn up [soon].” Plant is looking to use the tapes as bonus tracks on the reissues that are expected in 2014. They already have Jimmy Page‘s approval, but John Paul Jones is particularly interested in making sure that some of them don’t wind up on the shelves. “I’m desperately trying to [use] this one track – or the two tracks – [with] John Paul Jones singing lead,” Plant continued. “And so far [Jones is] up to giving me two cars and a greenhouse [to leave] them [off] the album.” That said, Jones may be too busy these days to notice. He is currently working on an operatic adaptation of ‘The Ghost Sonata,’ a 1908 play by Swedish writer August Strindberg. http://ultimateclassicrock.com/robert-plant-discovers-new-unreleased-led-zeppelin-songs/ |
