Stones took the stage at approx 8:30 pm.

Considering the curfew, the earlier the start, the better.

Mick:

"It's such a beautiful evening, we're so lucky to be here. This time in England is so beautiful..."

Followed by a little Shakespeare:

"Let’s hope we blow like sweet roses in this summer air
As summer’s lease hath all too short a date"

Mick loves the dance numbers, and if they sell a download of Miss You, because someone at a show heard it vs. anything held under ABKCO, their profit is greater, which Mick has probably decided is better.  Have your people contact his people about another "meeting", so you can charm him into your thinking...

It does look like Mick and Keith are getting along better than they have in ages and judging from the interviews, a new album looks possible now. However, what a toss pot setlist and did Mick Taylor come on for Satisfaction? Also, any Brian mentions? It would be nice to have them say something at the next gig for Brian and Stu but they always seem to let everyone down when it comes to these things. I was hoping for something like Mick Taylor coming out with them on the first song but I knew it would never really happen. Nonetheless, there is something that is always a bit special when they play England. It's one of the only times that you know they are all united and it feels like they are teenagers again.

We had a great time, and as usual, the Rocks Off family was a major highlight of the night. I'm not a fan of festivals, and standing around in the grass below an gargantuan stage was just OK for me. That said, the boys played great. My one disappointment was that the crowd didn't go wild for Keef like a true Stones crowd would. Nobody in our section was howling "Keeeeeeeeef" when he began his bit.

Keith had been avoiding the far left of the stage all night - he had me convinced he wasn't gonna come to us at all. But thankfully he came over for his solo on Satisfaction it totally blew me away. Absolutely great show

Also gutted I didn't get a close up of Charlie - couldn't really get an angle on him from my position.

"More to follow them i have the time."

Looking forward to RO'ers reviews of the show.

From the pics, it's clear the pre and post show gatherings were fantastic.

I want to know about the show.

I have to admit, from the sidelines, it was disappointing NOT to see more gems in that setlist. Seemed like a missed opportunity to me, especially in light in of the Glastonbury set and the 44th Anniversary of Mick Taylor joining the Band. But I wasn't there, so I need to hear from those that were.

Just home an hour or two ago. Stayed on until today to catch the Bowie exhibition at the Victoria & Albert museum this morning (if youre in London for the show this weekend, I recommend checking it out - but get there by 9.30 am)

Anyway, it appears that London was hotter this weekend than it was in 1969 and I'm happy to report that the Stones were a lot hotter than they were that day too. Apart from Keith doing something bizarre on the first note of the show and Mick missing his cue for the last verse of Brown Sugar, they were all pretty much on all evening. Saturday proved to me that the euphoria of the 02 opening night I saw in November wasn't just an emotional reaction - they really are playing better than they have in a decade. I really enjoyed the whole show - even the songs that I think should have been retired ages ago. ('Miss You' was really good - honest. There. I said it). I know its hard to judge a TV performance against a gig you attend in person, but I thought they played better than they did at Glastonbury.

Setlist was pretty much as I would have expected, content wise, to be honest. Except for the fact that they moved a couple of the warhorses to early in the set to get the festival crowd going from the off. It worked pretty well, as the show was really well paced and the crowd (around me, anyway) seemed really into it throughout. We didnt get into the gig until after 6 and by the time everyone did their thing (merchandise, pisser, bar, grub etc) the agreed rendezvous time extended from 15 minutes to almost an hour so the Vaccines were nearly done when we finally got somewhere that at least half of us could agree upon as a vantage point. Well, well back from the stage but in fairness the sound was really good.

Vaccines finished at 7.40 (they played about 40-45 minutes, not the one hour that BST had put on their website) so I was confident enough we'd get a two hour set after all from the Stones and thats exactly what they did. 19 songs is a bit underwhelming though, it has to be said. It could have been arranged that they were onstage before 8.25 and able to play a couple of songs longer than what we got.

Highlights for me was the one-two punch of my favourite pair of Stones songs - Midnight Rambler and Gimme Shelter. 'Sympathy' was quite terrific as well, with an amazing fiery backdrop which looked amazing in the gathering darkness. The crowd went really nuts for 'Paint It Black' and (surprisingly) 'Gimme Shelter'.

The show started with a five minute montage of footage from the 1969 show instead of the fan video we've had for the tour shows. Other than Jagger wearing a frock (was it the same one? Anyone?) on one song, asking the crowd who had been there in '69 and introducing Taylor at the start of 'Midnight Rambler' (first time this tour?) by commenting that '69 was his first show ('we just dragged him out of the pub and put him on stage..') there was very little mention of the iconic '69 gig - and no mention of Brian. A wee bit disappointing, but not surprising.

The underuse of Mick Taylor though continues to be a real head scratcher. One song on electric and then bringing him back to play a barely audible acoustic guitar on the final song? Whats that all about? Its the musical equivalent of having the chance to cast someone like Jenna Jameson in your own porn movie and then reducing her to a clothed part where she just flashes a bit of cleavage.  'Midnight Rambler' is the highlight every night. A large chunk of the audience know that and I'm pretty sure the Stones do as well. Maybe THAT's the problem!

The Stones have a lot more mileage in them if they can work at a reasonable pace and dont kill the momentum they have now by taking long stretches off the road. The setlists are what they are, I suppose - I didnt really expect anything daring for a festival event and it wasnt an expensive ticket (£95) so it was well worth it. Whether I'd pay silly money again for an arena show is another issue, however  - but for those who can or will, there's no real misgivings to be had about the performance levels. This tour is streets ahead of the Bigger Bang tour - but with a few minor tweaks that are not outside their control  (a bit more variety in the content, more songs with Taylor, fewer 'token' guests and not forcing their fanbase to play a game of chicken by putting off buying tickets until the prices tumble) - it really could be even better.

The pre-show was great fun as always. Always terrific to see people I havent seen for maybe a decade or since the last tour - or ever. We had a real hoot at the Monkey Puzzle as you can probably tell and at the St Giles afterwards.

I wont be at next week's show as months before the Stones announced these gigs I'd made arrangements to go see a few Bruce shows a couple of days later and combining the two isnt really doable, but I hope everyone has a blast. I'll miss you fuckers.

Oh yeah, and BST/AEG couldnt organise a game of strip poker in a whorehouse. The whole event has been utter chaos from day one as they changed their plans for the layout, ticket pick ups, running times and everything else on an almost daily basis. Not to mention the fact that most overseas ticket buyers didnt get their tickets sent out on time.

Altamont was put together with a precision and foresight on a par with the D-Day landings at Normandy compared to this clusterfuck.

Been waiting for your review Gazza!

Good to hear you enjoyed yourself.  Also great to hear that your experience with the Stones current playing lines up pretty well with everyone else's reviews throughout the US tour.  They are indeed playing at a better level.

I myself agree with you that the band is playing at a level better than the ABB tour--a few others have also said the same thing. I do wonder if that is truly the case or is that something we fans say every time they go out on tour?  They always seem to be "better" than the last time they were out.  It sure is a mystery because this time around they surely ARE playing at a better level than before.

For example, over the weekend I happened to watch this clip from the Rio show from 2006 (?) and was a little put off with what I heard.  I can't recall at the time being that disturbed by it but only by comparing it to the performance from this tour do I see just how limp this performance is--even with Mick flailing about like a fish out of water.  So glad he's turned it down on this tour.

Spot on Gary!!

Yeah, the show was a little disappointing, song choice as well as length wise, but also quality wise for me. Keith was struggling on many songs (just see how he fumbles through the intro of SMU) and even Mick seemed to have some problems: out of breath, timing problems etc. He sounded a bit like he had a cold, maybe he did. But Ronnie was really sharp, so it's a well deserved 'well done Ronnie' from me!

I had hoped Mick would have at least mentioned Brian's name, but well, that's also typically Mick right. Mick Taylor was great on MR as expected. I hate how they under-use him too, probably also typically Jagger. I wonder if Taylor'll join for the Euro leg too in the fall, we'll see.

Anyway, I adjusted my expectations and didn't go for a high quality Stones show (though would have been nice), as I think they basically have sucked live since the new millennium.

I also was disappointed with the sound level: I could barely hear them sometimes, being further away to the side. Mind you, no fault of their own, but Hyde Park residents conditions to BST apparently.

I agree with Gaz about the organisation of the thing: just horrible. And don't get me started about trying to get something to eat: lack of choices, not enough vendors, waiting 60 minutes for a cheeseburger, just silly. Toilets were fine though.
Also I drank free water all afternoon as it was insanely hot and they gave away cups and refilled peoples bottles, very nice guys too.

And getting to Hyde Park and seeing Bernard just strolling around the grounds was so funny. I ran yelling after him like a groupie, lol, but he was gracious as ever, taking his time for photos.

The meetings at the Monkey Bar before and the St. Giles hotel after were sublime of course. I had a real blast, thanks everyone!

Oh and if you have nothing better to do, just watch my video snippets here:

The Rolling Stones Return to Hyde Park After 44 Years
Band recreates atmosphere of famed 1969 shows in stage set

The Rolling Stones returned to Hyde Park on Saturday, 44 years after their celebrated performances at the central London location, to a crowd of 65,000. The Sun reports that the band wanted to recreate the experience of the 1969 performance by installing two 70-foot tall model oak trees onstage, to mimic the woodlands the band played in decades ago. A video montage played footage from the 1969 performance on big screens just before the band took the stage.

"When Mick and the band looked out from the stage back in the Sixties, all they could see was a sea of people and a load of trees," a source told The Sun.

100 Greatest Artists: The Rolling Stones

"It's like a cross between Wimbledon and a pantomime forest," Mick Jagger said from the stage.

The Rolling Stones' 1969 shows at the park were their first with Mick Taylor in the lineup; Brian Jones had died just two days earlier and had been out of the band for about a month.

The Rolling Stones were joined by Gary Clark Jr. for the bluesy crooner "Bitch," and later by the Voice Chamber and London Youth Choir for the choral introduction to "You Can't Always Get What You Want," followed by "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction."

The performance was part of London's Barclaycard British Summer Time celebration, a new two-week festival that opened on Friday with Jon Bon Jovi. Other performers included Tribes, Palma Violets and the Vaccines.

Just listened to one of the bootlegs and I think they did good. A few bum notes from Keith, but what's new ? ! I thought Mick sounded a little out of Breath, but he was running about more than on the arena stage. At almost 70 he is incredible by any standard. He certainly had a better gig than I did. Don't really know what happened.....Drunk ? I don't think so. I think the heat /sun got to me as I felt seriously weird after the 1st number. Annoyed about the tier one restricted view , I went on a ............er , kind of rampage down to the front and ended up getting punched for my efforts. I f*cking deserved it to be honest. Flairville thought I'd lost my mind ! I think I had for a while.....came back to my original position with Ben, SV and her husband, but I spent the rest of the gig "detached". It wasn't drink. I've done shows sober, merry and wrecked and always enjoy them. Cooled off as we got moving out of the venue and came round.......my worst ever gig. Passed out on Sunday and spent half the day lying down and drinking water.....bad. Next week I'm bringing a hat, shorts and more water !

Chalking this one down to experience.

Splendid review. But please expatiate somewhat, Stray. A stupefying jab to the very centre of the gizzard, was it? A head-lock followed by repeated pummeling around the cheery chops? A single but fierce one in the gentleman's purse?
Any further details would be nice for the record.

None of the hard-RO-hitters seemed noticeable at Tim Ries' show tonight. Bernard was really splendid on Wide Hearses and Selina Sillanpää, from Finland, delighted on both No Expectations and a violin-driven Bro Shugah. Sweet summer night. Happy days.

Luckily a glancing ,limp wristed effort. I just looked at the guy until he explained why he thought I was out of order. He kind of apologised , so I did. No harm done. Careful with the heat next week !

60 hours or so after the event, as afew thoughts regarding saturday's show. (I don't need to recount the pre-show events - the photos speak for themselves).

So Keith fluffed the opening few notes of the opening song, so what? Few in the large crowd would have noticed & the reality is, any "mistakes" made by the band were negligible.
There was a, largely, fantastic atmosphere to be witnessed on saturday night. The festival crowd, full of mainly young people, who i would hazard a guess, were Stones show virgins, were "up for it".
The Stones, playing out of their 20,000 seater enormo-dome, comfort zone, responded in spades to the hordes of teenagers & twenty-somethings singing back at them.

'Gimme Shelter' seemed to be the biggest favourite amongst the crowd, where i was standing. The masses went insane.

Jagger's grin throughout told a truth.
He was clearly enjoying himself. Maybe, just maybe, he now realises that there's a whole new generation of Stones fans out there worth entertaining.

I for one, and i expect i'm in the minority of the 'hardcore fanbase' when i say this, hope they play more festivals & events where young fans get to see & hear they're heroes.

However, as per usual with field shows:- poor facilities. Criminal pricing of refreshments & stewards with limited knowledge of anything but navel-gazing.

Much respect to St John Ambulance volunteers & medics, who were on scene within seconds, everytime a festival goer, 'went down'.

A combination of hot weather too much booze and Mary Jane.....Mad dogs and Englishmen.

The Rolling Stones have returned to London's Hyde Park - 44 years since their last famous gig there.

Their historic free concert on July 5, 1969, came just two days after the death of founder member Brian Jones.

The legendary band topped the bill on the second day of a new festival, Barclaycard Presents British Summer Time.

Last time, frontman Sir Mick Jagger wore a white dress and began by quoting from a poem by Shelley.

But this time Sir Mick - who celebrates his 70th birthday in three weeks - was wearing a leopard print jacket and began his band's set with Start Me Up.

Tens of thousands of people were in the crowd in London, including celebrities such as David Walliams, Gemma Arterton, Simon Fuller and Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie.

Celebrated music producer Bob Clearmountain - renowned for his work as a live mix engineer - flew in to put his magic touch to the proceedings.

The Stones played two gigs at Hyde Park, both of which were filmed and recorded.
Glastonbury Festival 2013 - Day 4 Tens of thousands filled the venue in Hyde Park for the show

It is thought the sound recordings will go on to be sold through the iTunes store, while footage is expected to form a future DVD release.

The Stones' performances at Hyde Park came just days after their much-anticipated headline stint at Glastonbury the previous weekend.

Theyve taped the second one already?

I know the setlists are fucking predictable, but thats still a pretty impressive trick!

Its certainly looking like the Hyde Park shows are being prepared for a DVD release of some sort, if the way Eagle Rock have been pulling footage of Saturday's gig off you tube is any indication.

If the 40th Anniversary Licks Tour gave us the wonderful "Four Flicks" DVD set and if they found a way to give squeeze out 4 discs from the ABB tour to give us "The Biggest Bang" DVD set...I surely hope the set for the "50th and Counting" really delivers the goods.   There were way too many great moments on this tour...

Will be nice something like that-...

DVD 1- The Arena Show - Newark Dec 15
DVD 2- The Outdoor Show - Hyde Park July 13
DVD 3- The guests celebrating the band´s 50th anniversary
DVD 4- Te documentary (Crossfire Hurricane pt2) 83-2013, Interviews etc etc..

I'd want at least another full arena show from the 2013 tour...many performances besides the guest spots were also memorable.  Hopefully they create a "best of" the 2013 shows to make up one "full" 2013 concert---including the guest spots.  The Newark show was alright but I think the shows from this past tour topped it.

It's utterly criminal and shameful that there was no mention of Brian Jones or Ian Stewart. You know, nothing important- just the founders of the band that has made millions.

Absolutely.....they should be part of the final band intros in the last show..and before Keith begins his set he should acknowledge Mick and let the crowd roar.. as a peace offering and also cause Mick deserves it..will it happen? course not

I'm sorry this gig was just pure anti-Glasto. American-style
somnambulance descends on Hyde Park...

I don't care how well they play. If this is the net effect,
well then just forget about it.

Was the secret of Glasto that the audience was comprised
primarily of non-Stones fans? Who were getting to see the
Stones essentially for free?

I dunno, there was some decent energy there. What do you expect from people standing 10 miles away from the stage, essentially watching a gig via the jumbo screens? Ninja moshing? Wall of Death?

That's still better energy than you'd see at a Super Heavy show. :nanker

certainly was the opposite of that where I was.

And I was probably even further back than these people.

Its very hard to be engaged in a show or feel part of it from 100 yards away, but the people around me - who were a mix of young and older people - were going apeshit.

Glasto was such a phenomenon. A few hundred thousand
people decide to party, and then the Stones decide to join
them, rather than the usual other way around. A very
unique dynamic that unquestionably lit a fire under
everybody...

I have a young friend in town here in country Australia,
with whom in the past I've watched Shine a Light, the
Doom and Gloom vid, and the Newark PPV. He's also
downloaded a lot of the Stones stuff for his ipod or ipad
or whatever, so he likes the Stones a bit but never could
quite see why I was such a fan.

Well, he's just finished nursing school, has his credentials,
and decided to take a month in Europe to celebrate. He
found he could pick up a bit of cash by being hired as a
nurse at Glasto, and this hiring was before we knew that
the Stones would be there.

I ran into his mom today, and she said she got this call
from him at some ungodly hour, and he was screaming
about how the Stones were the greatest thing he's ever
seen. I have no idea at this point how close or far he was
from the stage, but he's lazy so I doubt he was anywhere
near the front...

All in all, as I've written elsewhere, I think this 50 and
Counting version of the Stones is an atrocity, culturally
speaking, even though I know the music has been pretty
good at times, if only in a very retro way. But what the
Glasto crowd and the Glasto Stones accomplished, in
producing a mass ecstatic experience in 2013 around
the music and values of 1972, is just so impressive and
wonderful that I'll join everybody else in wishing that
against all the odds it can somehow happen again.

Reactions were like this too where I was standing (also not very close to the stage). Some real drunk English jerk was in my face several times, most people were not even looking at the screens or stage but talking, wandering around and getting pissed... The fact that we could hardly hear Jagger at some points and the sound level just wasn't loud enough probably attributed to that too.

A group nearby (ages 30-60) could hardly stand on their feet and they 3 guys (one old, 2 younger) were constantly trying to start fights which the equally drunk women in the group shushed each time luckily.

Imagine paying 100 quid to enter a place to get shitfaced for probably an equal amount of money and not even noticing the music... weirdos.

When my friend and I sang along to songs like Before they make me run, Beast of burden, All down the line, they just looked around stunned that we knew the songs, and not just because of my 'amazing' vocal capabilities ;)
We were definitely the only Stonesfans around there...
