Title: Hyde Park 6th & 13th July - Pre-show etc.
Post by Gazza on Jun 23rd, 2013 at 2:44pm

Ok, its almost the UK's turn.

I dont think there's much point doing a thread for a meet up at Glastonbury is there as the few fans who are going will have to arrange any meet-ups 'on site', but if anyone wants to start one, feel free to do so.

So anyway, I dont see that anything has been formally arranged for Hyde Park so maybe this is the time to start something.

We've ended up going for a bar called The Monkey Puzzle as a meeting point. This bar is about a twelve minute walk from the north entrance to the concert, which is close to Marble Arch tube station and is the entry point for those of you with Tier 3 tickets.

Address :
30 Southwick Street, London, W2 1JQ
Tel: 0871 951 1000

Nearest Tube stations :
Edgware Road (0.3 miles), Paddington (0.4 miles), Lancaster Gate (0.4 miles)

Nearest National Rail stations :
London Paddington (0.2 miles), London Marylebone (0.5 miles), Kilburn High Road (1.8 miles)

Note that the pub doesnt serve food at lunchtime on weekends, but obviously there will be plenty of food outlets nearby and in the park itself.

Note also that the opening time for entrance to these shows is 12 noon. The shows begin at 2 pm and is due to finish at around 10.15 so I guess you can expect the Stones to be onstage around 8 pm. Specific stage times will be published on the line-up page on the festival website in the week prior to the event.

The festival's website can be found here :
http://www.bst-hydepark.com/

Please note also that if you have will-call tickets, the latest (revised) instructions from BST is that they can be picked up in advance from the box office on 3rd and 4th July and on 6th July from 9.30 am. There is (at present) no provision for a box office collection on Friday 5th July, presumably as there is another concert in the park that day. There are box offices at both the north and south entrances to the park.

Thanks Gazza,

I've been wondering about a meeting place. All the pubs around  Hyde Park look a bit too Celeb/Gastro. from what I've seen, but this looks ok. Riff raff allowed I take it ?

Looks like the St. Giles will be hosting the usual all nighter afterwards, but flexibility is the name of the game if we want a Rocks Off gathering........which we do !

Riff-raff should be OK. Utter vermin is compulsory though.

I havent checked anything with them but from their website they open at 11 am which should be fine, I'm sure.

Got my ticket for July 6th. Coming over with a mate of mine I got into the Stones a couple of years ago - after seeing them for the first time in November 2012 I told him he HAD to see them.

Anyways, my ticket says Special Guests: The Vaccines and the Temper Trap. No Gary Clark Jr??? Was looking forward to seeing him, especially after seeing him open for Clapton in May. Does anyone know if he's still playing?

Tier 3, £95, for both nights are now available at the BST website. I'd choose 'Will Call' as ticket delivery is a joke.
Also, Tier 2, £199 available too, without the wank wristband.

Amsterdam has beautiful canals, the Van Gogh museum plus other great museums, Anne Frank House and so much more. And I can't forget my fave, the Heineken Brewery.

So please resist the temptation to spend too much time in the red light district and the cannibus cafes.

I hope I have been some help in making your trip that much more pleasurable.

Enjoy!

In Paddington, and just a few minutes north of Hyde Park on foot, but away from Bayswater Road which will be absolutely crawling with tourists and concert goers.

It also has a beer garden

Ok, I phoned the Monkey Puzzle just now and they open at 11 am, which is fine.

However, on weekends they dont serve food at lunchtime which may be a problem for some people.

There'll be plenty of food available at the gig and elsewhere en route for anyone who needs it, of course.

What do you folks think? Should we stick with it or go elsewhere?

I'm arriving Friday PM with my friend Marc,
so shall be at the park saturday afternoon.
I'm planning on taking it cool (IE; NOT stand in front of
the stage for 10hrs without a drink, just to have a god spot)

another friend flies in from the Netherlands and
he won't be there before 1800hrs anyway.

I suggest that we all meet up at a place where they sell

As for Friday night, I wanna suggest the famous Archway Tavern but I know it's too far the freak out there. Where's everybody coming from or staying? I'll be out by Clapham Common, so I'm partial to the Balham Bowls. In Soho there's a blues bar that was okay but to be honest, I was spending alot of time at Cro-Bar...it's open 'til 3am!!

For those of you who will be in London next week:

Monday 8 July Tim Ries will be playing the Rolling Stones Project at the Lyric Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue in London. Tim will be joined on stage by Bernard Fowler, Lisa Fisher and Darryl Jones, as well as other special guests.

The Rolling Stones Project will perform at the beautiful Lyric Theatre in London on Monday July 8th. After the historic Stones concert at Glastonbury last weekend and in-between the Hyde Park concerts in London, The Rolling Stones Project should prove to be an exciting evening of music. The Project hasn't played in London since 2007 at Ronnie Scotts.

For tickets:
http://www.nimaxtheatres.com/lyric-theatre/tim_ries_-_the_rolling_stones_project

In 2005, Rolling Stones saxophonist and keyboardist Tim Ries, produced, arranged and recorded the Rolling Stones Project. The arrangements are steeped in the jazz, blues, rock and Latin genres. Guest artists included: Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood, Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, Lisa Fischer, Bernard Fowler, Darryl Jones, Bill Frisell, John Scofield, John Patitucci, Brian Blade, Ben Monder and many others. During the 2 year Stones Bigger Bang tour, Tim recorded another project, Stones World, and released the disc in 2008. This was a unique opportunity to record in many countries, utilizing the talents of local musicians, singers and dancers and record world music versions of the Stones classics. This time, Keith, Charlie and Ronnie recorded as well as Mick Jagger. In addition to the 4 Stones, there were 75 guests on Stones World, including: Brazilian legend Milton Nascimento, Flamenco dancer Sara Baras, Fado sensation Ana Moura, Salsa King Eddie Palmieri, Stones singers Lisa Fischer and Bernard Fowler, pianist Chuck Leavell and many other jazz, rock and world greats.

Uproar regarding the BST Timetable according to their app:

The timetable in the BST-Hyde-Park-App for @#$%& is as follows:

King Charles 14.20-15.05
Garry Clarke Jr. 15.50-16.40
The Tamper Tramp 17.25-18.15
The Vaccines. 19.00-20.00
The Rolling Stones 20.45-22.15

Only 90 mins by the looks of it, this better be an administrative error on BST's!!

I've written on their Facebook wall & Twitter asking them to confirm whether the times are indeed correct. I have also emailed Rob Hallett from AEG so he can confirm. It'll be interesting to see what tomorrow brings, I have justified the cost to myself based upon a full Rolling Stones show, 90 minutes does not represent reasonable value for money.

10.30 seems to be the norm for outdoor shows in London. That was always the case for Wembley and Twickenham and  Hard Rock Calling pulled the plug on Bruce at Hyde park last year when he went over a 10.30 pm curfew and was still playing at about 10.40-10.45

I always expected both Glalstonbury & Hyde Park to have slightly shorter sets than normal, as they were festivals, but still to be around the two-hour mark.

If theyre on at 8.30 they'll probaly play until 10.30. Still hoping for at least two hours. But if each days brings us an extra 15 minutes, maybe by Saturday we'll get a full length show!

The line up shows a 45 minute gap between each of the opening acts, but half an hour between the Vaccines (7pm - 8 pm) and the Stones (8.30 - 10.15). That makes no sense at all. If anything, youd expect shorter change over times during the day and maybe 45 mins before the main event.

I'd still expect some of the opening acts to be on a bit earlier than scheduled and the time between sets to be shorter. Hoping we get two hours minimum.

To add insult to injury. Bon Jovi's slot for the Friday night - 7.20 until 10.15.

Fair play to them for taking care of their fanbase. I only hope our band will do likewise.

Jagger: Same songs, no butterflies

Mick Jagger has hinted the Rolling Stones might play the same set list at Saturday's Hyde Park gig that they played first time round in 1969 - but there will be no repeat of the stunt that saw him release hundreds of butterflies into the crowd.

This weekend's performance comes almost 44 years to the day since they played the famous free concert in the central London park.

That gig, on July 5 1969, was only two days after the death of founder member Brian Jones and marked the live debut of his replacement guitarist, Mick Taylor.

The singer told Absolute Radio's Pete Mitchell: "Obviously, the same set list is going to be used, it saves me having to think."

The 1969 gig kicked off with Jagger reading extracts from a poem by Shelley in tribute to Jones, the band's founder, who was found dead in his swimming pool at home.

Jagger admitted that this time the songs might be played "in a slightly different order", saying: "I'll put them in the butterfly boxes and then throw them in there cut out and then shake them and then see what comes out and in what order."

He said there would be no butterflies released because they "didn't go down very well last time". He said: "I think we got a lot of complaints from the park because they didn't know we were going to do it and they were, of course, the wrong kind of butterflies and they went on to eat the wrong kinds of... Anyway they weren't happy."

The stage at Hyde Park is being covered in model oak trees in a nod to the first time the rockers played at the venue. The Sun reported that the 70ft fake trees have been planted on top of the stage to recreate the feel of their performance in 1969.

A source said: "When Mick and the band looked out from the stage back in the Sixties all they could see was a sea of people and a load of trees, but many of those have been cleared or replanted since. So they want to recreate the woodland. As you can see from the pictures, the two oak trees either side are absolutely massive. They want it to look as authentic as possible."

:: The Barclaycard British Summertime Music Festival runs from July 5-14 in Hyde Park, and also features Bon Jovi, Elton John and JLS.

From what Ive been reading on the internet, there are actually a lot of people taking this seriously - and some are only doubting its validity because the 'by request' choices are all post-1969 songs. :)

<< Somebody on the Shidoobee FB page said Mick was talking about recreating the setlist from the 69 Hyde Park show. COnsidering they still play %90 of it.......Should'nt be too hard>>

The original setlist:

        I'm Yours and I'm Hers
        Jumpin' Jack Flash
        Mercy Mercy
        Down Home Girl

        Stray Cat Blues
        No Expectations
        I'm Free
        Loving Cup
        Love in Vain

        (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
Hyde Park Women ( well, they did Glasto Girl instead of Factory Girl, right?)
        Midnight Rambler
        Street Fighting Man
        Sympathy for the Devil

Keep LiV...drop the other 3 covers and sub in SMU / MY / D&G...THAT would be a show for EVERYONE to enjoy...oh yeah...drop I'm Free and slide in CYHMK

This would fit into any time restraints that are looming...and time for some long ass poetry reading that everyone is too high to make sense of...

Music producer Bob Clearmountain adds magic touch to Rolling Stones' Hyde Park setlist

ANTHONY BARNES   FRIDAY 05 JULY 2013

Celebrated music producer Bob Clearmountain is being flown in to put his magic touch on The Rolling Stones' return to London's Hyde Park tomorrow.

The band will give a headline performance at the outdoor venue for the first time since their historic free concert almost 44 years ago.

And Grammy-nominated Clearmountain - renowned for his work as a live mix engineer - has been lined up to ensure recordings of the show are up to scratch.

The Stones will play two shows at Hyde Park, with the second next Saturday, and both will be filmed and recorded. It is thought the sound recordings will go on to be sold through the iTunes Store, while footage is expected to form a future DVD release.

Although Clearmountain is not working on the sound which concertgoers will hear, he will be making the sure the sound of the recordings is the best it can be. He has previously worked on live albums Stripped, Still Life and Live Licks for the band, and also worked on their studio albums Tattoo You, including the single "Miss You".

The band's performance at Hyde Park comes just days after their much anticipated show as headliners at Glastonbury last weekend which saw them run through many of their best known hits.

Frontman Sir Mick Jagger has already hinted that the concert will feature many of the songs from the band's set list when they played their free show in 1969.

In an interview with Absolute Radio's Pete Mitchell, he said: "Obviously, the same set list is going to be used, it saves me having to think."

The previous gig, on July 5 1969, came just two days after the death of founder member Brian Jones and marked the live debut of his replacement guitarist, Mick Taylor. The performance kicked off with Sir Mick reading extracts from a poem by Shelley in tribute to Jones, who was found dead in his swimming pool at home.

There has been speculation that the band would be welcoming some guest performers to the stage, but it now seems more likely that the band themselves will be the main focus although former guitarist Mick Taylor will join them as he did at Glastonbury. Support act Gary Clark Jr, the blues guitarist, may also put in an appearance with the Stones.

As ever, there will be a few starry VIP guests at the show, which forms part of the new Barclaycard Presents British Summer Time festival, who are expected to include Kate Moss among others.

I'm getting in late Friday eve, so it'll be straight to the hotel,
but for Saturday I brought all my toys, so ready for a play date. (interpret this as you want...)

Is the meeting point this Saturday the monkey puzzle again. . (and where is it?)

Elton John has appendicitis and has cancelled his appearance at the Friday 12th July show.

The gig - which also features Nick Lowe, Ray Davies and Elvis Costello - will now go ahead as a FREE concert with refunds being given for those who need them.

Sounds like a good deal for anyone there for the whole weekend. Check the BST site for further info.

Here is the BON JOVI setlist from last evening...I am not just posting this to make Gazza spit out his beer...but the length of the show is curious...since there has been all this talk about the Stones set and curfews, etc...

26 songs:

Rockin' All Over the World
(John Fogerty cover)
You Give Love a Bad Name
That's What the Water Made Me
Raise Your Hands
Born to Be My Baby
Lost Highway
It's My Life
Because We Can
What About Now
We Got It Goin' On
Keep the Faith
Someday I'll Be Saturday Night
In These Arms
Captain Crash & the Beauty Queen From Mars
We Weren't Born to Follow
Who Says You Can't Go Home
I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
Bad Medicine
(With "Pretty Woman" and "Roadhouse Blues")

Encore:
Dry County
Wanted Dead or Alive
Love's the Only Rule
Have a Nice Day
Livin' on a Prayer

Encore 2:
Always
These Days
Blood on Blood

There were three acts on the bill for the Friday. Bush, The Kaiser Chiefs (I think) and Bon Jovi. On the schedule posted on the festival website, Bon Jovi were down to play from 7.20 to 10.15, so I assume they did about three hours.

There were five acts on the Stones' bill. There's a 10.30 curfew for each event (maybe earlier on the Sunday, I dont know) but there's no way anyone is telling the Stones or any headliner 'you can only play for xxx amount of time'. As long as theyre off for 10.30 the event can and will be tailored around how long the headliners agree to play for.

The headliner for one of the Sunday night shows - the boyband JLS - are down to play a set of 45 minutes. They go on stage after The Beach Boys. God knows what their fanbase of 12 year old girls will make of a bunch of wizened septuagenarians singing stuff like 'Be True to Your School' and 'When I Grow Up To Be A Man'.
