Thanks for the updates, folks. Presume there was a choir on YCAGWYW as usual. Wasnt there a story about them in the local press a day or two ago?

Solid show.  Highlights...Jagger & Watts were completely on as usual. Jagger needs to lose the ape cape, it's boring.  Ronnie is playing in another dimension, he is outstanding.  Keith gave the crowd a "Boston Strong", which went over well.  He was slow out of the gate, but got his stride in about 10 minutes.  He crushed Sympathy.  Sway was outstanding with Mick T.  He did seem somewhat lost on Rambler.  He was held back during Satisfaction, we could see him behind the drum kit with a puzzled look on his face, pointing to an amp.  When he did appear, he just strummed his axe, seeming a bit aloof.  Boston University Choir was present for YCAGWYW, which was one of the evening highlights.  Good, solid show.  We ended up with Club Level seats for the $85, which was a major win.   Secured, shi-shi area to get to the seats, no lines for anything.  Saw Peter Wolf go running past us.. Of course, we were seated next to someone from my hometown, which is always seems to be the case.  Pre game-went to the Shidoob event @ North Star bar, where I was lucky to meet Bitch, what a nice person! Met several fine folks from Shidoob as well....Thanks for the header photo, have a few more shots which I will send along later today...and this just in...I work security at concerts in the Boston area....I just received notice I am working The Stones show Friday night....Rock On!

It was nice meeting you too Nellcote! I also lucked out with my $85's and pulled Loge 2 Row 1 so it was the first row above the floor seats and not far from the tongue ramp. Not too shabby! Gary Clark Jr supercharged the band and here is a video of that great tune.

Beast of Burden is a hard to song to get right on stage but they nailed it and it was better then the Katy Perry version I saw in Vegas. Katy was OK but without the special guests, the song is cleaner.

Naturally for me Mick Taylor on SWAY was the highlight of the evening ~ a dream cum true ~ love is the way to find out, Its just that demon life has got ME in its sway, and yes I thought of Brian during the song. Mick T shined like a diamond, I love this song and I loved it last night more than ever. Here's the video and its worth a header for sure!

Emotional Rescue is becoming a warhorse on this tour, not that I am complaining because I love it and they are perfecting it. The song is funky cool and tight, and MICK does not sing about his pet Pekinese anymore, the lyrics morphed into to weak in my knees now, which makes more sense. Bobby Keys gets a shout out for his bluesy solo. Also header material!

Agreed.  Who would've thunk, eh??  The song was never played on stage and now it's being done practically every night.  And it gets better and better.

Will Mick ever sing all 3 verses in falsetto??

Nice solo. Lead vocal needs a bit more work (especially on the bridge). Despite his claims to the contrary, Mick doesnt hit the higher notes as easy as he used to - not a criticism, its perfectly natural for a singer's vocal range to be less when he gets older, and his voice is generally in good shape by anyone's standards let alone a man who is a month short of his 70th birthday.

Of course this may have a lot to do with the fact that my shows are over and I'm watching the rest of the tour through YouTube, on the other end of the country but:

Does Mick seem a little tuckered out to anyone?  He seems slightly sluggish physically and vocally from what I"m seeing since they left Chicago.  This is not a "complaint" at all...but a genuine concern/observation.  I mean, the guy is a few weeks shy from being 70--it's totally understandable to not have the same stamina than his younger days.  He works his ass off on every show so him appearing and performing the way he does is a miracle in itself.

Not noticeable to me MICK moves nonstop and its difficult to snap a decent pic. I have more pics and videos to post later but I'm on my way to the Four Seasons to do some stalking! I heard Mick T was out shopping and Bernard was signing autographs.

I did not attend last nights show. But a musician friend of mine, who's opinion I value said "they need to rehearse".

Again, I wasnt there. Were they off last night? Sloppy?

Most of what I've seen this tour has been tight. Great. So I dunno what to make of what I heard about last nights show.

Probably, your friend is correct, as I went with my longtime friend, who fronts a band, who said about the same thing.  We both said to each other, they are past the point of rehearsing to please anyone.  What you see-is what you get.

So how did the will call thing work out?  Did anyone figure out if getting there early is better or is your name already on an envelope and it doesn't matter when you get there?

Scope my friend, how the hell are you?  So we waited until 745P to go in, as I thought the later odds were better.  All they did was ask for my license-no email confirmation, no credit card.  Once they found my name, they handed me an envelope.  I bs'd them about me & my buddy being there 38 years ago to the day for the '75 tour, and he started to hit me with trivia-I slayed him.  I said, hey do I need to go to the car to get my oxygen tank, he said no-you will like these...and he was right.  Some folks on Shidobee got their tickets & went back out, so The Gahden was not the police state as far as this went..

Midnight Rambler ~ whoever thinks The Stones need to practice should listen carefully. You cant fake this stuff, and it isn't perfection, but they practically invented rock and roll! It took them 50 years to get it this good! I don't think they need any more practice at this point it, is what it is!

It's grand when they nip around the tongue. Ronald's circumnavigation in Boston during 'Start Me Up' was one of his best/silliest. Any multiple gatherings on the tongue are dandy. They should get out more. The exercise would be good for them.

BU choir joins the Rolling Stones in unlikely pairing

Boston University’s Marsh Chapel Choir usually sings church music at nondenominational worship services. It specializes in Bach, the Anglican choral tradition, and music from the Renaissance, and the audience rarely tops 200. None of whom are sweating and screaming.

But this week the staid choir was on stage at TD Garden in front of 12,000 out-of-their-minds Rolling Stones’ fans, standing alongside Mick Jagger in his shimmering shirt. When the spotlight landed on the choir, its members broke into the a capella opening of the Stones’ classic “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”

The choir had never been this far from Bach in its life. But in a city known as much for its classical music history as for its rock ’n’ roll muscle, the merging of the two on one stage was an unlikely triumph for both worlds.

“I never had that feeling before,” said Bethany Saul, a soprano in the choir. “The noise of the crowd was still the loudest sound I ever heard. It vibrates through your body.”

6/12: Lighting the way for the Stones

The unusual stage pairing, which happens again Friday, is something the Stones are doing throughout their silver anniversary “50 And Counting” tour as a way for the band to connect each concert with the fans in that community. By choosing “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” the band joins forces with a local choir to handle the opening and to come back in later during the song.

The chapel’s musical director, Allen Jarrett, said the crowd went nuts at the mere sight of the choir.

“As soon as a choir comes out on stage,” he said, “the audience knows what’s coming. They erupted.”

Jarrett is not sure why his choir was chosen by the Stones, but he suspects that its Bach focus and strong soprano section helped. The opening of the song requires an ability to hit some high notes.

“It’s all word of mouth,” he said. “A representative of the band told me, ‘You have a great choir that sings with the right kind of sound that we’re looking for.’ ”

“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” was first recorded by the Stones in 1967, with the London Bach Choir handling the opening, but the band had never used a choir live until last November in London. The band’s music director, Matt Clifford, has said it was so successful the band members agreed to do it throughout their tour. In Los Angeles, it was the Cole Conservatory Chamber Choir, and in Chicago earlier this month, it was the Music Conservatory Chorus from Roosevelt University.

Jarrett got his call six weeks ago, just as the choral season was winding down, and BU students were getting ready to go home for the summer. Fortunately, many of the group’s 50 members were still in Boston.

He sent out the music three weeks ago to the 24 choir members who were slated to perform. But the singers rehearsed together only once before Wednesday’s concert.

“Every night, when I was cooking pasta or stir-fry for dinner, I put it on repeat and sang it over and over again,” said Saul, who is originally from Sheffield, England, and will graduate in 2014 with a degree in international relations.

By the time she rehearsed with the group, she felt ready. And then all that was left was the sound check right before the show, which for some members was almost as exciting as the concert itself.

“That was the highlight of my day,” said Brenna Wells, another choir member. “Being onstage with the Rolling Stones with no one else around you. They didn’t seem like they were brushing off the sound check, or phoning it in. They gave it their full attention. “

Once the concert began, the choir members had to be patient. The Stones played their full set list, and when it was time for an encore, that was the choir’s cue. The members were broken up into two groups, 12 on each side, the men in black pants and black button-down shirts, the women in black dresses, and when the lights came up, they began to sing.

For the choir, it was nothing like singing a Bach cantata in a church. But being surrounded by their fellow singers was a comforting feeling.

“We do high-art classical music,” Jarrett said. “The fact that we can do what we did last night speaks well of our community’s versatility.”

And they will do it one more time.

“I am really looking forward to Friday,” Saul said. “I am going to be just as excited to do it all over again.”

Choral music, she said, doesn’t bring that many people out.

“You don’t get cheers like that at classical music concerts.”
