MONTREAL - A group of singers from a choir based in Laval will seriously boost their “cool” factor this weekend when they join the Rolling Stones on stage at the Bell Centre.

Le Choeur des Jeunes de Laval will be venturing out of their comfort zone by tackling something that doesn’t often come up in a choir’s repertoire: rock ’n’ roll.

They will sing a choral version of an introduction to the Stones’ hit song You Can’t Always Get What You Want, and will then accompany the Stones for the song’s finale — proving that you can get what you want, at least some of the time.

“It’s a big privilege and honour,” said musical and artistic director Philippe Ostiguy. “Rock ’n’ roll isn’t something we usually do, so we’re a little nervous.”

Who wouldn’t be nervous to share the stage with rock icons Mick Jagger and Keith Richards? Especially since their 50 and Counting tour is widely believed to be the Rolling Stones’ last big tour, and the longest-performing rock band of all time has a reputation for company that is typically a little raunchier than choir boys.

In fact, far from being a bunch of rookies, the choir is filled with veterans who have accompanied some pretty big names in the music business. They have sung with the likes of Céline Dion and Marie-Mai, been on stage at Place des Arts and Carnegie Hall, done countless performances with the Opéra de Montréal, toured the world, recorded five albums and performed for Yoko Ono.

“Each event is a gift,” Ostiguy said. “They are very experienced young people.”

The 24 choral singers who will join the Stones on stage are seasoned professionals although they are only 17 to 22 years old. All of the 40 singers who belong to the group (yes, Ostiguy had the difficult task of whittling that down to 24 for the performance at the Bell Centre) were graduates of the accomplished Les Petits Chanteurs de Laval (a group of about 120 boys age 8 to 17) and Les Voix Boréales (a group of about 40 girls age 9 to 17).

Le Choeur des Jeunes was created just about a year ago to offer a venue to graduates of the two successful younger choirs who weren’t quite ready to quit as they reached CEGEP.

What they enjoy about belonging to a choir, said Ostiguy, is not only their love of music and the variety of songs they do, but the experience of belonging to a group and forging strong ties through their musical connection.

“They love the spirit that is created,” Ostiguy said. While they have to start young, between the age 7 and 10, many stay around for 10 years, he said.

Ophélie Savard-Gratton, 18, is one of the singers who graduated from the younger groups and has been a member of the choir for 10 years now.

She found out only two weeks ago that she would be singing on stage with Mick Jagger, and can’t believe her good luck.

“This is really an event,” she said. “We do a lot of singing with the symphony, but this will really be a unique experience to do rock ’n’ roll.”

Ostiguy, who will be conducting at the Bell Centre performance, predicted the choir wouldn’t have a problem with the Stones song, which he said isn’t particularly complex.

“What I think will be really special for our singers is the experience of performing at the Bell Centre,” he said. “Feeling the energy of the place, the vibrations of being on stage at the Bell Centre, I think that is going to make the experience amazing.”

It will definitely be the Brown Sugar on the cake for 24 choir singers from Laval.

Le Choeur des Jeunes de Laval will appear with the Rolling Stones Sunday at 8 p.m. at the Bell Centre. Tickets cost $168 to $635. Call 514-790-2525; visit evenko.ca.

Thats reasonable enough. Not your problem. I just find it hard to imagine that theres no RO member in North America who's still awake at around 11.30 pm ET and that we cant get a setlist posted either in real time as the show progresses or at least after it finishes anymore. It only takes about two minutes.

A bit disappointing compared to how we used to do these things.

I said the same thing about the last Toronto show...
