Post by Gazza on May 20th, 2013 at 10:25am
Another late night for those of us in the old world...so ya know what to do!

The online vote is back for this show

The choices are :

Dead Flowers
Just My Imagination
Shine A Light
Some Girls
Sway

No confirmation of the special guest as yet, although Slash did tweet 'see you in LA' to Ronnie a few days ago, so it could be him.

Strange. The online vote is on the website, but not on the phone app. If I remember, the opposite was true the last time they held a vote.

When it comes to Stones, Inc., who's driving the plane?

In any case, I voted for "Sway" again, of course.

Because it's a no brainer that it should be SAL or Sway, the winner is
Some Girls (Zuma Beach reference)

Since I don't put much faith in the integrity of the online vote, I'm finding it hard to imagine Jagger telling Taylor before the show, "Sorry, Mick; we were gonna have you do [song X], but the fans chose otherwise."

'Just My Constipation' would be grand, shirley.
Otherwise 'Sway' (without Taylor).

Can't really see having Slash play Dead Flowers. I'm really afraid they'll do Sway with him instead. Which would be a big slap in the face to MT. :o

I'm thinking of Slash's "Dead Flowers"-isms on "Used to Love Her." I actually think it'd be pretty good.

Some Girls is the only song I see Slash fitting in on and so that's my vote..Sway is just out there as a tease for the last night of the mini tour.

You make the point which we as die-hard Stones fans would really enjoy.
Sadly, Plundered has as much chance of being played as seeing God.

I think its worth remembering that the setlist from the other night was a 'night 2' setlist so a few 'non warhorses' will get rotated for the benefit of people who go both nights.

Tonight is also a night 2, so ER and a few others might get rested again for the same reason.  If it does, they'll probably bring it back OK. There are a lot of multiple night stands coming up.

Just got back.  In a word:  wow.  Fucking wow.  After CYHMK, I honestly couldn't concentrate for the rest of the show.  Taylor's section was better than I could have ever imagined.  It was what I wanted PLUS more.  "Sway" was a huge surprise but nothing could have prepared me for CYHMK.  It looked as if Mick may have even forgot its inclusion because he was waiting for Chuck's cowbell to start off "honky Tonk Woman."  You could hear Mick ask: "You ready Chuck?" But Chuck just pointed to Keith and Keith busted out the opening riff.

"One More Shot" was a huge train wreck.  One that I sort of felt Mick never recovered.  He had lost his footing and he was very doubtful for most of the rest of the show.  It's amazing how much this song can trip them up...either they can't hear each other or no one's paying attention because each member thought they were in a different part of the song.  Fascinating yet painful to watch!

More soon.

The opening was fantastic and Get Off My Cloud is a great opener. They really hit the ground running and the energy of the band was fantastic. It then got a little choppy on IORR and Paint It Black. They seemed to be getting tempos mixed up and I was worried that it was going to be a disjointed night but boy was I wrong. It started to seriously pick up with Gimme Shelter. For all the guest spots on this song, no one has ever got close to her live performance of it and she was really on top form tonight and held the higher notes with real power and texture to her voice. All Down the Line was great but for these first five songs, it was almost impossible to hear Ronnie's guitar. When Mick said we are going to Far Away Eyes I was jumping for joy while a few fair weather's looked around aimlessly around me. Ronnie's pedal steel was beautiful, although not perfect, but it's just so wonderful to hear him actually play again and not be hammered the whole time. The feel he has on the pedal steel is really quite magical.

And then came the moment where the night became unforgettable for everyone and it became one of those nights among Stones fans where you can say: I WAS THERE. Mick nonchalantly said we're going to have Mick Taylor join us for Sway and all the hard core fans just about embarrassed themselves in front of thousands in all kinds of unsavory ways. The band just sounded so rich and deep with the great man on stage with them and I hate saying things like this but if you haven't seen the Stones with Mick Taylor, you haven't seen the Stones. They were enjoying themselves so much that Mick affectionately ruffled Mick Taylor's hair at the start of Sway. His solo was the first treat in a night packed full of them.

Doom and Gloom started off really powerfully but then got a little mixed up which was a shame because the crowd seemed to be enjoying it at the beginning. It's amazing how powerful Charlie is. You'd think the booming drums on the single edit is hard to top but he really is a lion and without bashing away like a charlatan, he gets so much power out of the drums that it's quite astonishing. One More Shot was unfortunately a bit of a mess but the song really comes alive when they do it live and the live version doesn't compare to the album version. I was happy enough to go home with Sway but then I heard Keith play the opening riff to Can't You Hear Me Knocking and I quickly looked around to see if Mick Taylor was up there and it was almost as if it was too good to be true but he was. He played such a blindingly beautiful solo and showed that he is inseparably imbued into the essence of this band. It was so great that you got the feeling from all of the people around you that something really special happened here on this song. Keith, Ronnie, and Mick were smiling and just enjoying listening to what was a truly special moment.

HTW was fine but, and I hate harping on about this, but it would help if he  :wow joined them again for some of these warhorses so that it takes on a different feel like Satisfaction in San Jose. Still, I can see why they really have to have it in there because the people who spend the whole show giving the rock salute and head banging, start getting impatient if they don't get their hit of the war horses. Keith's set was wonderful for one reason: You Got the Silver. It really was beautiful and Ronnie played some lovely slide which Keith acknowledged at the end. Before They Make Me Run was fine but it was hard to hear Ronnie's solo again but the harmonies of Keith with Bernard and Lisa was wonderful. There was a weird synthesized sounding bit in the middle which sounded a little odd though.

Next came Midnight Rambler and you could tell the band knew that they were nailing it. It was absolutely mind blowingly fantastic. Mick Taylor, once again took the band to another level. Although I know that they don't really give a toss about the fans, one thing I felt when hearing Mick Taylor was that if anyone ever twats on to me about how Keith and Ronnie are not technically good enough, I can always point to Mick Taylor and say be quiet, we've got someone who can hold his own against anyone. The whole band were just riding high knowing that they were blowing the roof off the Staples Center with this version.

I've had enough of warhorses, but after tonight, I definitely want to hear Miss You again if they play it like this. The crowd really went crazy for it and because Darryl Jones has that wonderful solo now, it really gives the song a different feel. One thing I missed though and which is a big highlight for me is Ronnie's solo which has been phased out. The ending was a wonderful high energy ride through their rock block with a nice break of YCAGWYW where Ronnie played his best solo and absolutely killed it. Mick Taylor gives Satisfaction a new breath of life but I would prefer to hear him solo like in San Jose. I really wish the band would fully integrate Mick Taylor eventually. He could bring so much to stuff before and after his time, not to mention on songs like Winter and Time Waits for No One. The only show I can see topping this one is possibly New York but more likely London. And please, no more wanky guests, this was so much better.

Short Notes:

- Mick and Keith shared a great moment on Sympathy at the side of the stage when Keith put his arm around Mick's shoulder. The band seems to be very united and they shared some affectionate glances here and there.

- Ronnie's guitar was very low in the mix on some songs which was a little annoying.

- The overall sound was very high for some reason and the treble was a little too dominant.

- I'm a little gutted that Emotional Rescue was cut. I'd lose IORR or Tumbling Dice or alternate them.

- The new songs should be split up because the fair weather's start sucking the atmosphere out of the place because they want to give the rock salute and say rock and roll baby or whatever else they feel is necessary to do at every concert.

- Bernard and Lisa had some great dancing going on in addition to their usual stellar singing.

- You can hardly hear Mick Taylor on Satisfaction

- The place was packed with only a very few empty seats.

- Charlie Watts, Charlie Watts, Charlie Watts

I forgot to mention the most blindingly obvious point of all: the greatness of this man  :thatwassmart

When you are the greatest, sometimes people take you for granted but Mick is not human. He really is one of the only true superstars left in this world. There are a thousand reasons why I look back fondly to going to various Stones shows over the years and they are all thrilling but the number one reason above all is that I can proudly say that I saw Mick Jagger perform.

After the third song with Mick T any did Jagger yell out:

"Now will all of you setlist whiners on Rocks Off and Shidoobee finally shut the fuck up?"

Seriously!

I'm not able to explain it but the look on Jagger's face a few times made me believe that even HE knew just how much he had worked to make sure the fans were happy tonight.   Not saying he was angry but I bet your quote had crossed his mind a few times tonight!!

riffkeither, I hear what you are saying.  I literally stood there smiling as they performed this song.  And when it was all over and Taylor left and the band launched into "Honky Tonk Woman" I just stood in my place, mouth hanging open, still unable to connect what just happened.  After a double whammy with "Sway" and "CYHMK"...I was numb.

DAMN!!!

Just a quick switch out of Miss you  w/ ER and this would have been PERFECT.
A Career spanning tribute to their legacy!!

I still find it frustrating that they are playing about 10-12 songs from Taylor-era...yet still use him as little as they do.
3 is a 300% improvement from the start...
Mayby Jagger is warming up to this whole concept...or someone has given him a swift kick in the arse!

Great reviews.

Taylor on four songs. About fucking time. Hopefully the figure will climb even further.  Finally they realise that the only special guest they need is the guy who's been twiddling his thumbs and scratching his arse in the wings for 20 songs or so every night until now.

Sway, Rambler and CYHMK all on the one show. And with Taylor. Bloody hell.

Very interesting observation from Shidoobee poster Waterpup. I think we can relate:

"unfortunately the the show tonight re-enforced what I said about pulling gems out. The dickheads didn't know the songs or get what was happening, well over half of my section (I had an incredible seat thanks to StoneBeatle) sat down while the magic was happening and gave only a polite applause after it happened. 'You throw your pearls at swine'.

Greatest rock n roll band of all time, but they have some of the worst audiences in the universe.

In fairness, a lot of that is self-inflicted.

What kind of people pay a week's salary for a concert ticket to see the Stones - but DONT know songs from 'Sticky Fingers' ? Their biggest selling record from that classic era. Its just as well Jagger introduces Taylor every night. I genuinely believe most of these people wouldnt know who he was otherwise.

I'm happy to do it everyone!  We're all in this together!

It was a reflex...the second Mick said "Sway"...the camera was flipped on.  When I heard "CYHMK" rip...I nearly wet myself.  Then I immediately looked for Taylor and there he was.  Standing next to Ronnie.  I just kept screaming "holy shit!!" and people around me probably had no idea how big this was.  But I must say, the exact moment Taylor came in with those first few notes of his solo...I thought I was dreaming.  I had never experienced that at a show before.  I was hypnotized and completely in a different place.  Taylor, that solo, and the Stones were meant to fucking be.  Like I said earlier, I was literally in a daze after he left the stage.  I could not concentrate worth a damn for the next few songs.  I was useless.  I was hungover from CYHMK.  Man, I'd love to relive that again.

And for the record, all the ushers claimed this show was "sold out."  From the looks of it...it certainly was.  Out of the 4 other shows I saw, this certainly looked packed. This was the closest seats they could give us.  We were originally in the nosebleeds.

Last night the Stones raised the bar higher than I had any reason to think they would based on the first six shows on this tour by finally giving us what we have wanted for most of our lives! Now will they keep it raised or even raise it higher? I hope in Toronto on Saturday it's not back to Midnight Rambler and Satisfaction...to me that would be unacceptable!

Those songs are from early albums that werent big sellers, though. 'Sticky Fingers' is the biggest selling Stones album after Some Girls and Tattoo You and is the biggest selling album from the period where most fans consider them to have been at their peak. It's akin to going to a Springsteen concert and not recognising 'Backstreets' or 'Jungleland'.

You do get that tourist mentality with all major acts, I'd agree, but it does seem to be more prevalent at Stones shows, unfortunately. I just cant comprehend how someone can spend that money on a concert ticket but wont spend 2 or 3% of the cost of the ticket on one of their best known CDs. And if people are attracted by stuff like Hot Rocks and 40 Licks and enjoy the shows, doesnt common sense dictate that they'd  want to investigate the artist's catalogue even a LITTLE bit further?

My section totally died during All Down The Line and never recovered.

During Midnight Rambler I heard a harmonica blast that just sounded totally off. Turns out the dude next to me was playing along. I moved.

Totally weird, crazy random moment long after the show. I was walking in downtown with my friends and right on the sidewalk on Olympic between Figueroa and Flower something catches my eye.

It's a guitar pick. Unmistakeable KISS logo. On the other side the Gene Simmons sig. And another one. And another one. 4 total.

How the hell do 4 KISS pics end up on the sidewalk like that?

What the hell?

Was a major KISS fan right up til the 1996 reunion which just makes it all even stranger.

How that's for a review? Maybe I will just let the music speak for itself this time. Get home in about 4 hours, keep your ears peeled.

At the risk of being a smidgeon of a party-pooper here, or at least of sounding a smidgeon of a note of caution, but.... I do hope The Stains don't become a band of endless histrionic scaley solos by the end of this tour.
I'm all for varying and switching up the set-list (and preferably in a way that ranges across the 50+ years) and I love the odd waddling solo - albeit preferably a good slidey Ronnie solo - but, to me at least, the beauty of The Stains exists in the 'air' they leave / allow between the instruments / each other, and their blend of brevity and bounce.

When Jagger is standing next to Ronnie literally WAITING for Taylor to get to the main groove of his solo....you're watching the real Mick Jagger.  Not the performer who's up there posing, making a face or snarling at the audience...you're watching a guy who's up there with his band, and being COMPLETELY in the moment.  You can clearly see Jagger is anxious for Taylor to wrap it up and while Taylor is going nuts on his fretboard, Jagger has got nothing to do except wait for him.  He shares a few laughs with Ronnie and Keith and waits it out, clapping his hands and just listening to the music---something he almost never does on stage anymore.  At one point you can even see him mouth the "Ba da da DAH dah" part as if trying to remind Taylor to wrap it up...for a quick second he almost looks a bit worried (it makes you wonder if THIS was what Jagger feared all along by giving Taylor more songs: long meandering solos?).  The exact second Taylor comes in with that little groove, Jagger turns the "performer" button on again and begins being Mick Jagger again....moves about the stage, clapping to the crowd and pointing and the whole nine yards.  Fascinating as hell.  And fuckin cool!

Love it and I hope they add Taylor for other surprises..i.e. Time Waits For No One, Dead Flowers, heck, let 'em bring him onstage for Sympathy '69 style! I could go on for hours, but I'll say that even if I never see a YT clip of MT again, I am pretty satisfied with these 12/13 gigs.

I'm not sure it's for anyone to say what/who/which the real MJ is, swee' Justin.
I'm not sure there's anything particularly special about the moment (which you mentioned) of his concern/anticipation; in the sense that the Stains' interplay always seems lovely and special to me (albeit more subtle usually). MJ seems, to me, to be doing this sort of thing all the time. He's the singer and orchestra-leader, shirley, and he's presumably accepting of a bit of extended-wanking but keen there isn't too much of it, and that structure is balanced with playfulness.

Someone, I think said that MJ 'got a bit lost' or anxious or something later in the show yesterday. If I'm not mistaken, could someone please elaborate / expatiate on this?

I know you don't mean to make too much hay of this, but others will, alas. You're appreciating the off-the-cuff-ness, on-the-edge-ness, which is great. The skeptics are desperately looking for evidence that Mick hates Keith, Keith hates Mick(s), etc. Truth is--as I'm sure you can relate--moments like that are what being in a band is all about. I've seen Bruce looking at Nils during "Youngstown" and "Because the Night," wondering when, and hoping he will, wrap it up soon. If necessary, Jagger is classy enough to privately tell Taylor to keep it tight. Taylor will happily oblige. All will be well.

Just revisiting the moment by watching the other videos, I can't explain the release of joy once the final note of CYHMK was played.  I was really surprised that I found myself so emotional but it was as if a huge weight had been lifted.  Apparently, this was what I needed but never knew it!  The roar of the crowd explained it all.  We were really touched to have them share that with us.

All good points.  The fact is I thought it was refreshing to see Mick almost without control for those few moments.  He tried to steer the ship a certain direction but the tides were way too strong for him.  It was, for me, something I had never really seen before and was very entertained by!  Because I as well felt like I was going along for the ride and not knowing where Taylor was going.  For a small moment, things were legitimately unpredictable.

It may have been me who mentioned MJ being a little anxious.  But not without good reason, there were a huge chunk of new songs in the set and everyone was on their toes. But mainly, the huge traffic jam on "One More Shot" seemed to have left a bad taste in his mouth for the rest of the show.  After that train wreck, Mick seemed to have been unsure about simple changes in songs like "Tumblin Dice" or "Sympathy For The Devil", needing assurance from Chuck that he was singing the correct parts or even on pitch.  I specifically recall a moment when Mick was confused about when Ronnie's solo came in during "Start Me Up."  He was giving some points and cues even though it was way too early in the song.  He and Ronnie shared a laugh about it.  I also recall at one point Mick making a face in frustration  as he turned over to Chuck for a nod of approval, and Chuck wasn't looking up to give him one.  In fact, I noticed a lot of times when Mick turned to Chuck and Chuck was playing, head down, focused on his work--which I thought was weird because he always made himself available for direction and guidance for all the members throughout each song.  At times, Chuck seemed to almost ignore Mick for extra help.  But I do no mean that in a negative connotation.  It looked to me as if Chuck was handing them back the trust to  work things out on their own.  Just my own observation and opinion there.

I know what you mean.  I've been in those situations--which is why I sympathized with MJ a little bit---but that didn't mean I wasn't enjoying the hell out of it!

Hopefully MJ doesn't tell him to shorten it, almost every performance of this song on the Licks tour clocked in at 10 minutes when Ronnie took the solo.  Last night's performance came in at about 8 minutes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vtILjo26ew

...and that was the case even when "Rambler" was in the set which was another 10 minute tune.

Not really!  I would've remembered that haha!

Take another look and you'll see that the uploader pulled a fast one.  That's footage from last night's "Satisfaction" and then he overdubbed it with audio of a live version of JJF.  You can see Keith clearly playing the Les Paul jr there as opposed to his Fender, capo on 4.

The uploader says in the info section:  (apologies for the audio sync... Blackberries really aren't made for quality video recording)

Thankyou, Justin, for your response re. the odd palaver / shenanigans / wreckage amidst the delights last night.

MJ's frowns / annoyance at 'Pipe' Ronald during the Hal Ashby film (1981/1982) was interesting, but then practically everything they do is interesting to me.

Did you - or anyone - film 'One More Shot', by the way?  And 'Farapart Thighs'?

'The Ruling Stains' is just my silly / affectionate name for the band, by the way.

All Regards

Love Mick T's little gesture at Keith around 1:30. The confidence is just oozing out of him. Who before this tour ever imagined he had that amount of stage presence?

And freeze-frame that shot of the triple guitar assault at 1:45. Does that image do yer heart good, or what?

At the risk of getting overly anal-ytical, re. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYEM2Jel38c&feature=player_embedded   and so on, it's a pity that CW's expressions & body language can't be seen much. I suspect MJ's concern is why how CW comfortable feels, or whether (generally) everyone is locking in with CW.
The expressions, links & threads on stage and in the studio between MJ and CW are not much examined but I expect they are super crucial.

From henceforth on the tour, the LA Set List will be using the other set lists to paper the room.

Youre not kidding, either. And the videos have been great too.

We've been quite pleased with how our facebook page has taken off since we launched it exactly 18 months ago. At the weekend, it had over 2,400 'likes'. Following the second Anaheim and LA shows in the last 3 days we've uploaded some of Justin's videos - and as of this morning that figure has shot up to 2,566.

Acts at the California Mid State Fair are going to have a difficult time topping this show.

What do you think is going on/being said from the 6:50 mark to about 7:15.   Not sure what to make about Mick Jagger's body language.

But if you *must* tie yourself in knots, an IORRer made a genius catch: while blowing his nose, Jagger motions to Taylor to come back and take a bow:

Thanks LJ, I know they're both taking it all in.

Funny though on Luxury and Mick T.,  did she tell you about the night she met him at the Woodstock show in 2010?

I'm watching these clips of MT and they've really got me thinking about his life.

"second chance" indeed

People can say all they want about MJ, but he's the reason MT is standing on stage right now.

Thanks so much Parmeda...taking photos at shows has been a little hobby of mine these last few years and I think all those shows I've been to was in preparation and training for these Stones shows this year!  So happy you got to enjoy the pictures as well!!

Is that true, Gazza?  Wow!  How great!  Thank you so much for sharing my videos on there---that's a huge thrill for me.  If you'd like to post any of my pictures as well--feel free!

Yup. The seeds were planted for all this back in '10, for the "Exile" reissue project. It was all Jagger's doing. Keith evidently had no knowledge of Taylor's participation in the "Plundered" overdub session.

Gazza, first let me say that is a very sweet Bob Dylan vibe you've got working now.

Justin,  I'm with everyone else here.  Thank you for the great photos!  Bringing back many memories.

We saw MT at the Bearsville Theatre show in Woodstock, pretty much right before he cancelled the remaining shows of the 2010 tour.  This was right before the Exile rerelease.

That's what brought my last post to mind.  The MT I saw that evening just seemed tired, withdrawn, uninterested in what he was doing.  Now I see him thinner and hamming it up a bit on stage, really enjoying himself.  Two totally different personas.  If anything, MJ, by using MT this tour, will give MT's career and life outlook a much needed boost.  Mick does seem to be doing a fellow musician a very good deed indeed.  Is it me or is Mick the caring adult and Keith the spoiled child?

Anyway after the Bearsville show Luxury wanted to know if MT would be signing autographs (she had brought her GHS album, their first release after she had become a fan)

This "theatre" (not really a theatre, but a bar in one section, a small stage in the other w/open space or seating) had a downstairs where the musicians had their dressing room.  Well Luxury walks right down the stairs and knocks on the dressing room door ("routine five" she always called it)  The manager opens the door and sees her and his eyes are bugging out and he's smiling, and yells "Hey Mick, someone here would like to know if you're signing autographs".  MT slowly walks to the door, kind of shuffling, smiling.  Luxury asks him the same question, and he says "If you guide me I think I can make it".  Well he takes her hand and follows her up the stairs and starts to sign for people.

Thanks to Luxury I got my VGP Eurpe '73 disc signed by MT!

Funny side story about that.  Before he signed it he looks at his manager and is saying something to the effect, "what's this?, did they release a live album and not tell me?"

He was gracious though and signed it.

Thank you Mick J for letting Mick T on stage.

Nice one, Eric.

Good point re: the Jagger/Taylor thing.

Mick T does certainly look to be in better condition than he was even last November when I saw him with the Stones in London.

Could well be that looking after himself was a pre condition of him playing on this tour.
