Title: Tour Opener. Staples Center, Los Angeles. 05/03/13
Post by LadyJane on May 3rd, 2013 at 8:37pm
We need an official forum to gather around to discuss tonight's show.

Here we are again. Many doubted we'd be, myself included.
But OUR Band is still touring.
This is my 10th Tour in 38 years and I feel giddy, nervous and blessed.

Enjoy the shows my fellow Stonesaholics.

Let's post our pics, thoughts, reviews and setlist info here!!!!

Everybody grab your glass/bottle. Come on now do it. A cyber toast.

To the Stones!!  :booze  :keithpunky

LJ.

I will be up all night studying for my last finals...so...

Let's guess the opener??

They have been doing this sorta throwback thing since 94 with Not Fade Away...then I Wanna Be Your Man last year...

I say Route 66 will be the opener since they are in LA and that is where Rt 66 ended

Evening, gentles and ladymen!

I Wanna Be Your Man or Get Off My Cloud for openers (agree with LJ, get one of the war-horses outta the way for an opener, specially JJF or Brown Sugar. Play em for 3.5 minutes and then another song, ya know?).

If the Stones hit the stage any earlier than 9:00pm there's gonna be a riot out here!

OK, Stones - time to grow up. Unbridled greed doesn't work as long as a) the history of Western civilization b) your career c) you think (see A and B) it does.

Drop those ticket prices starting tomorrow, fill up the houses, feel the love a cat like Muddy got in his later years while still making 40,000% percent more than him. You can still have it all, lads - including our respect.

So what. Taylor would just do the same scales he always did on any tune live. Still shitty to have the cat work out in rehearsals, promote his presence, and only give him one slot.
Wyman's hip to this.

dan and I were talking about that outside before the show. I am sure he was smiling down as the band played...

other thoughts:

loved seeing mick t play quite well on rambler; he even did the two step boogie dance-quite a sight. AND he gave us a little whammy bar :)

ycagwyw with the choir and the sped up/album ending was a very fun encore opener. keef's opening riff brought a tear to my eye...

Gwen looked a bit wasted, and effed up one of her verses - not once, but twice

Ronnie looked great, and played even better! awesome.

before they make me run was a nice keef song to get. hoped for t+a for  the second helping, but happy was good, and Ronnie shined.

Keith stretched his chops on a few tunes, esp. jjj and satisfaction-this was a wonderful thing to witness...

mick is a marvel. a genuine one of a kind. a sight to behold.

bobby was given a few moments to shine, Tim was definitely second banana, and that is probably as it should be. the crowd, myself included, showed bobby lots of love...

Charlie was understated, on point and much appreciated. perfect.

no blondie. chuck was low in the mix all night (which imo, is a very good thing) except on sympathy (and mick still loves that fur coat). I think the fine form keef and Ronnie are in has something/alot to do with this (not the coat, but you get my point)..

less pyrotechnics, and a huge screen. the understated stage works.

a great show, and quite a memorable way for this fan to say what is in all likelihood his final goodbye to his favorite band.

grrregory approves.

oh, and a HUGE thank you to Chris for the ticket, and to Paranoid Android, who facilitated the hookup-Rocks Off friggin' rules!!!

Some impressions:

My friend and I were pleasantly surprised just how well oiled this band is.  I mean, for a first night on the tour...they were superb.  They were fluid, ballsy and confident.  It really was astonishing to see the band just so well prepared for tonight.  Franky, I think they sounded better tonight than they did on any of the 2012 shows.  They must have worked like hell during rehearsals because they have gotten very confident with these songs and it shows.  You could guess that this band would be able to tour forever.

I had to confirm with my friend to make sure it wasn't just me being biased but he agreed that the audience absolutely responded to "Emotional Rescue."  They cheered when Mick announced it and they absolutely knew how special this was.  They cheered during the "knight shining armor" part and responded VERY well to it.  I'd be surprised if Mick thought he got a lukewarm response and chucked the song by the next gig.  I doubt he'd think that, I'd be willing to bet he'd definitely want to try it again.   I was a bit surprised that Mick only did the falsetto during the first verse.  He sounded AWESOME on it too.  He could've pulled off the rest of the song, I have no idea why he refused to do it.  I do wonder if it was a last minute decision or if they had rehearsed it that way the entire time.  Anyway, this song was easily the highlight of the night.

I was all the way up in the very last section, very last row of the arena.  Which meant we could dance and sing and rock out...the whole sections next to us were on their feet and doing the same thing for the whole show.  It's amazing, we moan and complain about the setlists being full of warhorses and not enough obscure hits but it's not very hard to understand why they include it...when you look around that giant room and see everyone jumping, dancing and singing to "Tumblin Dice" or "Honky Tonk Woman" it's very clear why they have to play these tunes.  I have heard these tunes a thousand times and even though I thought I was going to just patiently listen for the tunes to be over, I always found myself dancing and singing along with them by the time the song was over.  They got me.  I even enjoyed "It's Only Rock and Roll"..I thought it had just the right amount of jitters and wobbly enthusiasm to sustain my attention and I was surprised that I dug it.

At the end of the day, it's pretty difficult to be the cranky, know-it-all fan when you're attending these shows.  I haven't seen them perform since 2006 and it was just so damn nice to see them up there again.  It was really a warm feeling to hear songs like "Gimme Shelter" and "The Last Time" come through huge PA speakers, met with the loud roar of the crowd showing their approval.  I really missed it. I admit I was pretty bummed for about 2 hours after I got my ticket assignment because I was in the nosebleeds but by the time they played their tunes...it was hard to stay in a funk when they were up there doing what they do..and pretty damn well.

Weird thing I noticed;  Charlie has added a new crash symbal to his drum set.  It's directly to his immediate left, right next to the hi-hat.  I've NEVER seen this piece before...is this a first?  Would love to know why he's added it.  I only saw him use it once, and it was on JJF, and he did a cool fill that invovled crashing two cymbals.  It was pretty cool but never saw him use it again.

Some videos up soon!

Mick was slightly off key during his opening lines.  I may have seen Chuck notice it too so he adjusted his piano playing to assist Mick to get him back in key.  But all was well when Keith jumped in with that B chord on "Pleased to meet you..."

The ending was a small mess.  They missed cues and it ended on a small whimper.

Emotional Rescue was in fact great. However, not even the best show I saw this week. Everything "worked" but after all the ups and downs and 65 songs heard at rehearsal the last few weeks, realizing I was just watching a replay of the pay per view I found myself getting bored.

Got home really late because I hoofed it to a bar a mile away to see Paul Collins (The Beat, The Nerves) going on at midnight.

Imho and for all sorts of reasons , personal (on my part) and professional and artistic (on theirs) , it is a stroke of genius.

Great set & 23 songs! Taylor must really need the money to be trotted out like a venriloquists dummy for 1 bloody song. I was really hoping he'd do at least 2 in the main part of the show and come out for the finale.

I dont mind Keith Urban. He's a fan. But i must point out, he's actually a New Zealander, not Aussie.

You've hit the nail on the head about Taylor. Its great seeing him play but at the same time it really shows how little say he has in his role and its almost pitiful that he is being hauled all that way for one song. It really makes Wyman's decision not to join in very understandable indeed.

With regards to the finale, in all the shows Nov/Dec the Stones should have had Wyman & Taylor (especially London) onstage at the same time...all 6 living living Stones. Alas, it was not meant to be.

Agree completely Patrick, I'm hoping that he'll play on a good couple of numbers at Hyde Park. I knew not to pay too much attention to Keith's 3 guitar's make things interesting statement, but I thought the rehearsals with Taylor would signify a greater involvement. But in all probability he'll get 1 song a night and he is in no position whatsoever to turn it down....quite frankly for a bloke who was a key part of their sound, as well as Wyman, these token song(s) are a little bit thankless.

Nevertheless, as far as I'm concerned Mick T is better than having no Mick T, I look forward to him cooking with gas over the coming weeks  ;D

Which Hyde Park date are you in for Patrick?

Havent heard anything of the show yet, but good to see a setlist of that length - how long did they play?

Some very nice additions to that setlist but that closing third is still too predictable.

It was the most unorganized f-up i have ever experience, waited in line for 2 hours, then all they did is look at you id and give you tickets, THEY DONT EVEN CHECK IF YOU HAVE AN ORDER OR CREDIT CARD OR ANYTHING. we were in the nose bleeds, and the guy behind us got 109. LET ME MAKE THIS CLEAR - ANYONE WITH A DRIVERS LICENSE COULD GET IN. no checking if you had an order or anything, they just had a pile of envelopes with 2 tickets in and if you were in that line they gave you a pair. i am not even exaggerating. unreal

They checked a list for my name but I was 20th in a slow moving line so maybe they cut a few steps to speed things up. Looks like one person with a list trying to quickly supervise 3 people.

These guest appearances were all well and good at the anniversary shows, but the novelty can wear off pretty quick when there's too many of them

Likewise with the cheesy intros. Thankfully the performance stands on its own merits.

Those guest spots, perhaps with the exception of Respectable which cooked with gas, would have been put to better by using Taylor a little more

The Rolling Stones Offer Plenty of Surprises in Los Angeles Tour Kickoff
'50 and Counting' trek opens with big guests, lots of energy

After 50 years, certain aspects of Rolling Stones concerts are completely unsurprising, even if you've never been to one. The show concludes with "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." Charlie Watts plays his Spartan drum kit with flair and swing. Mick Jagger has more energy than a cheerleading squad that's been chugging Red Bull.

Kicking off their 50 & Counting tour last night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the Stones had plenty of twists, however – starting with the UCLA marching band, which began the show by working their way through the crowd while playing a remarkably funky version of "Satisfaction." Highlights of the set included a vigorous version of the folkie nugget "Factory Girl" from Beggar's Banquet and a song the Stones had never before played live ("never ever ever," Jagger testified), despite it being a Number One hit: "Emotional Rescue." The 1974 single "It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)" got a stripped-down bluesy arrangement that made it sound like it belonged on 12 X 5, a decade earlier.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dpcZ72-jSs&feature=player_embedded

"You Can't Always Get What You Want" had a choir on loan from California State University's Long Beach campus and climaxed with a gospel breakdown. Country star Keith Urban came out for the Some Girls deep cut "Respectable" (very cool choice) and not only sang the hell out of it, but held his own trading guitar solos with Keith Richards and Ron Wood. He fared much better than Gwen Stefani, who looked adorable in a sparkly Stones shirt and ironed Seventies hair but couldn't find the heart of "Wild Horses," just offering vocal swoops and hiccups. Mick Taylor's one-song appearance on "Midnight Rambler" has been well-hyped, but the return of the prodigal Stone was still a treat. When Jagger and Taylor leaned in together, Jagger adopted his most ominous demeanor, but Taylor struggled to keep a grin off his face – he looked like he was having the time of his life, and he played like it, too.

Keith Urban and Keith Richards perform during the Rolling Stones '50 and Counting' Tour at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Kevin Mazur/WireImage
Similarly, when Richards took charge of the band for two songs ("Before They Make Me Run" and "Happy"), he had the gleeful demeanor of a teenager who'd just swiped his dad's car keys. "It's great to be here," he told the crowd. "It's great to be anywhere, let's be honest."

Jagger also alluded to the band's advancing years, saying that they were playing the Staples Center to make the Lakers look younger. (The show was pushed back one day so it wouldn't conflict with a potential Lakers playoff game.) But Jagger, at 69 years old, is in fine voice and still has an astonishing array of dance moves: he struts across the stage like Bob Fosse demonstrating a solo for the funky chicken, he windmills his arms in secret semaphore messages, he hops from one foot to the other as if the floor was electrified; he even does jazz hands. Richards contents himself with his trademark move, the left leg kick, but each time he does that kick, it feels like he's genuinely moved by the sounds coming out of his guitar and needs a physical outlet.

If Richards' fingers aren't as nimble as they once were, his phrasing has only improved with time. When he and Wood hit the core of a song, as they consistently did, they felt like two old friends sitting on a park bench, finishing each other's sentences.

The band was rounded out by the Stones' usual sidemen, including Darryl Jones on bass, Chuck Leavell on keyboards, Lisa Fischer and Bernard Fowler on backing vocals, and Bobby Keys on saxophone. The sound gradually filled out as the evening went on, until "Brown Sugar" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash" were full-blast rock & roll, capable of blowing a 50-amp fuse.

[Although the arena was full, to pack the house, the promoter had to sell a slew of tickets discounted to $85 at the last minute. Top-notch seats went for as much as $600, which prompted Jagger's best line of the night: "Good evening, Los Angeles! Or is it really just Beverly Hills, Brentwood and parts of Santa Monica?"

Set list:
1. "Get Off of My Cloud"
2. "The Last Time"
3. "It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)"
4. "Paint It, Black"
5. "Gimme Shelter"
6. "Wild Horses" (with Gwen Stefani)
7. "Factory Girl"
8. "Emotional Rescue"
9. "Respectable" (with Keith Urban)
10. "Doom and Gloom"
11. "One More Shot"
12. "Honky Tonk Women"
13. "Before They Make Me Run"
14. "Happy"
15. "Midnight Rambler" (with Mick Taylor)
16. "Miss You"
17. "Start Me Up"
18. "Tumbling Dice"
19. "Brown Sugar"
20. "Sympathy for the Devil"

Encore:
21. "You Can't Always Get What You Want"
22. "Jumpin' Jack Flash"
23. "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"

Oh cool. So you did get in the $600 section with the $85 mystery tickets?

Yes I got lucky, Rockman was also in $600+ seats, about 2/3 back.
Can't believe this woman in line was complaining about standing in line to get in with the $85 seat process, then she started complaining about how $85 was too much to charge. I'm glad I brought Rockman in line which hopefully took away her $600 seat.

This is remarkable what this band is doing.  This goes beyond industry dominance.  This going concern ranks far up in recorded history in terms of impact/influence, meaning, power, and cultural superiority.  Some of these other alleged Messiahs better step up soon (any geeks been Raptured lately?  Not), or they will fall like the others waylaid by The Rolling Stones and their adherents.

Here's a pic I took of the Tongue Pit the very second they left the stage before coming out for the encore.  Easily could have fit maybe 100 more people in there.  From what we've seen in past shows, this pit is crammed.  I saw people leisurely strolling around in there going from one end to the other whenever they pleased, especially when either Mick walked around it.  I have no idea how many 85ers made it in there but I haven't heard one report saying that they scored a way in there.  Everyone in line with me were hoping to get there.

I saw someone coming through that door with a pit wristband and there were people staffed there to accommodate them. I don't know anyone personally and I asked about a dozen people I recognized from rehearsals.

Yeah I noticed the ushers when I got in were a little confused about the process regarding who was considered a pit person and just a normal seat.  Once inside and we weren't allowed to move around beyond that small area we were in, I began to ask every other person where their seats were and it was all over the board...100's..200's...300's.  But to be noted:  I did not come across one person that had floor seats.  And definitely no one I saw had a GA pit seat.

Nice to see Ronald boozing backstage (like he used to do with Keith Moon on The Boot In tour).  Ronald's terminal demise was predicted and loudly aggrieved, somewhat in earnest, on this very board 10 years ago, yet he's been hucking back the good stuff around the globe ever since.  See Dubai boondoggle, circa 2007.  He's a Rolling Stone.  Cf. She murdered Wild Horses. Why are they inviting people like her to play? To look cool? To massage Mick's ego because there'll probably be a few idiots out there who assume that if he's sharing a stage with a young woman that means he must be boning her?
More Taylor and less of this pandering bollocks, please. Urban was pretty good, however.

By contrast that version of 'Factory Girl' is fucking sublime. I've maintained for years that for the last couple of tours, the musical highlights of most Stones shows often occur when they move away from the often tired 'rock anthem' mode and into stuff like country, funk, blues, soul, etc.

This and 'Emotional Rescue' from last night enhances that opinion even further.

Yup.  Any time they try something NEW and distance themselves from the usual tunes...the results are usually surprising.  "Bob Wills Is Still The King" is my favorite example.  The two new songs last night showed a very capable and confident group.

It's pretty amazing to see Mick strut his way through "Emotional Rescue."  I mean, a new song like that, he's usually glued at the tip of the stage reading the teleprompter while eyeing Chuck for every little cue and change in the song.  Last night, Mick trecked out to the tip of the tongue, knew exactly when the changes were and called out to Bobby for his solo without even consulting with Chuck.  Mick must have done his homework and dare I say, it actually looked like he also wanted to perform this song too.

This is well done.  Could have been a fast-paced clanging mess, but they seem to have it down.  Maybe its really easy to play.

I agree...I've been listening to the clips since last night. They did a fantastic job with this.  They really seemed to rehearse this to death because this performance doesn't sound as wobbly as other opening night debuts (Dan mentioned during rehearsals that they worked on it one day for a straight 45 minutes).

It's really fascinating how they tweaked this song to meet their needs for a live setting.  They kind of shifted things around a bit, changed a few parts to make it less complicated.  The studio track is utter perfection but there would have been too many traffic jams had they followed the studio cut to every last note last night.

I never noticed how similar this tune is to "Miss You."  Both are obviously "disco" tracks, but in addition to that: both have fantastic bass lines, both have a "woo hoo hoo" singalong bits for the crowd (obviously more dominant in "Miss You"), both are four on the floor beats, both have a little break in the middle and both have talking parts ("I"ve been walking through Central Park..." vs "I will be your knight in shining armor...").  The songs are very much distant cousins.

They may have realized this as they were trying to finally perform this live.  They realized it's a rather complicated track so they made it completely easy on themselves....they made the riff (as played by Darryl and the horns) the main focus that drives the tune, instead of Charlie coming in with the snare during the chorus only, he's there for the whole song and of course, Mick only uses the falsetto during the first verse using it as an intro...the rest of the time Bernard and Lisa help with the falsetto.  I might say that it's sliiiiightly watered down from the studio cut but nevertheless they totally opened it up and made it to a danceable tune.

Hopefully it's not the last we see of it!

Apart from the greatness of this man  :smilemick, three things stood out for me:

1) The only band or artist in the world who can pull off playing Emotional Rescue while also playing Gimme Shelter, JJF, and Factory Girl all in one show is the Stones. That is the true sign of greatness. It's not just about versatility, but they play all these styles with state of the art songs written by themselves. NO ONE in the world can do that or really has ever done that.

2) The greatest songs are the ones that still sound powerful live and they breathed new life into what has always been a fantastic song: Emotional Rescue. For all the Keith centric people: Keith even likes this song. People focus on the beat and the falsetto, but the lyrics are absolutely fantastic and I wish they would breathe life into the rich history that is their catalog and play more songs like this. People said Mick was trying to be Prince but Prince has never written a song as good as this.

3) Ronnie Wood played a blinder on Factory Girl. People can talk all they want about technical skills, but no one can play that song with the flavor and sense of melody he played on that. Oddly, his sense of melody reminded me of the great Nicky Hopkins.

And...this is where you lost me...I have never heard anyone ever compare Jagger to Prince...When ER was recorded, Prince had not even released Dirty Mind...which was only his 3rd album...to put it in perspective...1999 wasn't released until 1982, and Purple Rain in 1884.
And the last part of your statement is so ridiculous, I won't even debate it.

Prince, is simply, arguably the best musical entertainer of the last 20 years. He is everything all of us here on these boards complain about
when it comes to the our beloved Stones...Prince : Unpredictable set list every night...slammin' guitar playing, every night...in touch with the audience...
even let's them come up to the stage and dance...and just just A-listers...Z-listers as well...and his $500 seats are about 200 strong per show...and they include bar service and
stage side tables with velvet ropes...they truly are VIP seats. The rest of us have to sit in regular arena seats hoping to get our $20( what I paid 2 years ago) -$90 dollars worth that night.

I respect your opinion...thanks for letting me vent.

True! 6th July, yourself? Lookin forward to it!

6th as well, its my second ever concert so I am counting down the weeks

Prince has bar service at his shows???  Holy Christ, that is just fucking brilliant.  Who serves?  Like buxom looking serving wenches?  Or they got spiffy looking maitre'd types?  Doesn't matter.  It's the concept.  The Stones really need to work on getting this.  At least roll some pre-tapped kegs down the aisles, or something to show they know how to put on a goddam event!

Yes!

Since it's Cinco De Mayo I'll sub Modelo for the Oberon, though.

It´s great to see how easily and properly they played Emotional Rescue. Unlike Sway in the previous tour, that sounded right all the way. Such a simple and efficient groove.

This is a fun video.  You can totally see that Keith Urban is a fan...he is soaking in every moment that he can while he's up there.  He's having a ball with Mick on vocals trying to guess when the "delectable" lyric comes up, he's getting some face time with Keith (which includes a full bow when he shakes his hand)...rocking out with Ronnie and makes it a point to thank Charlie before he leaves the stage.  One of the great moments from the night:
