I figured out the venue way in advance. Because I bought this ticket in February and the show was abruptly moved a few days ago

Unfortunately the information about the venue was completely irrelevant. After staking the place out and confirming it was the place, we found out there would be no ticket sales there. Did the lottery thing at the El Rey, struck out. Actually looks like the lottery was rigged in favor of those coming in after the time of the official announcement. People hanging around the Echoplex or showing up at the El Rey between 7am and noon were shut out.

Not much time to sulk, since I originally cared enough about this show to buy a ticket over two months in advance, I went to the new location (First Unitarian Church), suffered through several bands who sucked, even possibly slept, Blood Red Shoes was amazing, way better than last year.

I would have rather seen the Stones since I am already seeing Blood Red Shoes in San Francisco in a few days with less bands on the bill but I can't really say it was a bad night. And I was absolutely right about where the club show was going to be before anybody else leaked it. I only told 4 people. Didn't do any of them any good either.

Looking at the Echoplex setlist I am starting to get the idea they jammed out so many songs with Mick Taylor so they could pick the 2 or 3 Jagger thinks he sounds best on. Fuck him, he has shitty taste in music. SFM from rehearsals sounded absolutely incredible and then they play it without him at the Echoplex.

Hopefully they're holding back on the Taylor surprises until the $600 seats are full  :wow

Could have done without YGMR . Why not D&G ? or...........................well anything actually. It was ok in 94/95, but it's had more come backs than the Osmonds.

Where they lack in balls and creativity for a setlist, they certainly make up for it with MT.

I would have thought this a great place to showcase ER and IYCRM...work out any live kinks about them...oh well, YCAGWYW, can you?

Not that uncommon in club shows where they dont play a full length gig

First time theyve played Little Queenie since 1998...in fact the first time theyve played ANY Chuck Berry song in that time.

Figure you add in a Keith set, maybe 1 more Taylor song. Another nugget early in the set and a few warhorses and come up with about a 20 song set.

fiftyamp messaged me this earlier :

I only have my phone, but I can post when I get back. They were on fire. Guitars were high in the mix. Few kinks to be worked out, but that's expected. Little Queenie was amazing, I haven't heard KR play like that in years. Even the warhorses had a bit of an extra bite. God, I adore this band. Looks like they're going to play a small private memorial show for Andy Johns when they return to LA in a few weeks. Invite only ala the show for Stu.

That's great to hear I wondered what Little Queenie sounded like, particularly given Keith's fine effort 2 weeks ago. I look forward to the full review and thanks ijwthstd for all the updates, looking forward to my second Stones show on July 6th.

Actually one of the people I told hung around the El Rey and was eventually able to buy a ticket. I should have hung around too considering I had nothing to do for 2 hours but I switched gears pretty quick, rode with a friend back to Echo Park, got lunch and went to the other gig.

Must have been a truly amazing experience for those in attendance. Weirdly it wasnt the pics or footage that made me appreciate it, but it was seeing the picture of TONIGHT - THE ROLLING STONES - SOLD OUT on the billboard of such a relatively small theatre. Waow! i hope they do release more footage though... I wanna hear Little Queenie!

From the LA Times:

Rolling Stones invade Echo Park, perform an hour of classics

By Randall RobertsLos Angeles Times Pop Music Critic
April 28, 2013, 11:24 a.m.

During 50 years of performing, the Rolling Stones have done some peach gigs: They’ve stood before Hells Angels at Altamont, sold out Wembley Stadium and Madison Square Garden, gigged the Palladium in Hollywood, at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium for "The T.A.M.I. Show" and countless rounds at the Forum. Until Saturday night, though, the band had never played Echo Park.

In a surprise gig described early in the set by Stones singer/dancer/showman Mick Jagger as “the first show of our North American tour,” the band played the Echoplex, a basement club with a capacity of 650. In the crowd were friends, family and a few hundred lucky, patient fans who’d won a ticket lottery earlier in the day.

I am a very fortunate Rolling Stones fan, and watched from a peach spot just in front of the sound board as the London band, currently celebrating 50 years as a unit, performed 60 minutes' worth of classic material that focused on their work from the late 1960s through the early ‘80s, including “Love in Vain,” “Street Fighting Man,” “Respectable” and “Miss You.”

They did so on an extended stage that cut the Echoplex’s dance floor by half, so the Stones gig felt even smaller than those who know the venue might expect. When Jagger splashed some of his drinking water into the crowd, I got drenched — and then like any true fan, wiped the water all over my head, licked my lips to get some into my mouth. (This morning I feel like I’ve got some of Jagger’s DNA in my system.)

When Keith Richards, bandanna wrapped around his shock of gray hair and with gold hoop earrings, stepped up to hit the classic opening riff of “Start Me Up,” he did so with a force that knows no age, filled with power, confidence and the pure spirit of a man who has internalized blues, rhythm & blues, rock & roll and country. His six strings sent shock after shock through the venue.

Ditto Ron Wood, whose physique is as lithe and lean as his guitar lines; during “Street Fighting Man,” he worked with as much inspired physicality as in his days with the Faces.

The band’s been oiling the machine at a rehearsal space in the Valley, and the set had the feel of a final dress rehearsal for its upcoming tour, which starts Friday at Staples Center — capacity 19,000.

In the same way it’s unfair to critique the soft opening of a restaurant, this Stones gig at the Echoplex isn’t the one to review — that’ll come on Friday — but it is one that needs to be documented. After all, how many more times will the band be playing such a small space?

The set’s highlights were when the band stretched its material, and on three occasions these expansions thrilled the Echoplex. To see the Stones perform their classic dance-floor stomper “Miss You” on a Saturday night in a tight, sweaty space was as thrilling as you’d imagine. Bassist Darryl Jones pushed the rhythm, and his smooth solo was funkier than Bill Wyman’s original. Jagger pushed the crowd to sing along to his "oooh"-filled chorus, and the room did so willingly.

The Stones’ former guitarist Mick Taylor has been doing gigs with the band of late, and on Saturday he arrived for two of the evening’s most bluesy numbers: “Love in Vain,” the Robert Johnson-penned song that the Stones (with Taylor) covered on “Let It Bleed.” To watch Wood, Richards and Taylor work the blues was to witness three great guitarists tap into the depths.

As they’ve done for years, the Stones brought backing vocalists Bernard Fowler and Lisa Fischer to harmonize with Jagger, and keyboardist Chuck Leavell resurrected the late Ian Stewart’s piano runs like a mystic.

Equally deep was “Midnight Rambler,” which Jagger presented with as much menacing energy as ever. Again, with the three guitarists working a chunky blues progression, the band delivered both big volume and energy; these didn’t seem like 70-odd-year-old men but vessels for a music that is as timeless in 2013 as when the Stones were starting out.

And any mention of time must acknowledge the metronomic Charlie Watts, a man whose jazz-inspired drumming offered typical consistency. Equally adept at the disco rhythms of “Miss You” and “She’s So Cold” and the rock of “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Brown Sugar” — both of which the band performed in its encore — Watts continued his uninterrupted reign as rock’s most measured drummer.

How was the gig? How the hell do you think it was? It was the Stones in a little club, and for most in attendance, a dream come true.

They're shimmering and coooking.

Hopefully they're taking care of themverylovelyselves & each other. A hip-injury or any bottom injury must be avoided at all costs, especially when ripping sublimey through a Broo Sugar.

Just my imagination?  There's nothing like a bit of Stones pokey added to Smokey.

It's an interesting set list but it goes slightly against tradition in that they usually stuff the club show with the "rarities" that they will eventually ignore on the actual tour.  This club show featured nothing that really stands out as the real obscure cut.  "That's How Strong My Love Is" I suppose counts.  It just looks like a small sample of a typical show.  Nothing wrong with that but from all the reports of the stuff they were cooking up in rehearsals like "Shine A Light" or "Sway" or the longshot of "Emotional Rescue"...you'd think one of those would show up?  But it's very similar to the Trabendo set...just a taste of a full show.  Mick feels these club gigs are a week's worth of rehearsals in one shot...so it seems he thinks these songs need the most work.

Its quite slow, but I like the fact that its very guitar heavy.

Not as slow as Respectable from this show, which might as well be a waltz..

I wasnt impressed by the official site footage at all, to be honest. (mind you, had I actually been there, my feelings would have bit a bit different for sure!)

This was good, though. However, I dont recall them playing these songs at this slower tempo at the 02 show I was at.

Yup the video wasn't that flattering but still pretty cool.

I suppose the band is finally showing their age. This is how a group of 70 year olds are going to sound...especially playing these high energy tunes that we've heard thousands of times before played faster and in their younger days.  And there's nothing really wrong with that (especially if you just paid $20 to see them).

Sorry Justin but guys with large cocks get into places.

They come in, they take pictures, do what they want, then they leave.

Very little we can do about it.

It's a big dick thing.....

Oddly enough I got the same feeling watching the Trabendo footage. It seemed a bit leaden (as you'd expect from a band that hadnt played together publicly in ages). Then, when they played the 02 they were ripping the place up. Granted they had an extra 4 weeks of rehearsals by that stage, but it was still quite a difference intensity wise.

These men really need to rehearse the back-up singers so they can do "Emotional Rescue" in the stadiums.

It's time, people.

Really? Not to be argumentative, but I am truly surprised Gazza, since you, and many others are normally so keen concerning The Stones and their performances (*right down to the chord structure and Key) Actually, the first thing that hit me when I saw and heard live footage of their shows last year was that they were indeed performing some songs at a slower tempo. The first song I saw them do last year was JJF in Paris, and almost immediately I recognized it was just a bit slower in tempo. See the footage and you'll notice.

I am sort of surprised nobody mentioned this and not everyone noticing it until now? They are doing songs just a tad (probably 5-8 bpm) slower this time out ... same as their shows last year.

Ian

Would have been nice w/ the Rip This Joint too!!!

Can anyone tell what it says in the outlined rectangle after JJ Flash??

SFM is listed in that area and it is in the main set list.

Don't think so...but maybe...I don't think they would toss the intros at the end like that...those songs were not encores...I am really curious

Not a very flattering picture, and hardly one worth judging his ability for performing on stage for a couple of hours.

I LOVE seeing them as a 3 guitar band! This is historic! I am so happy to see Mick T on the stage, it gets me incredibly excited! Dream cum true, 2 MICKS! I feel like its back in the early 70's again but with an added bonus of Woody shredding it! wow I love this band more than ever and the slower tempo is a good thing so they dont burn themselves out.

Yeah it's really weird how night and day they are between the club gig and the first show of the tour.  Like you, the Trabendo gig was slightly lukewarm to me but it's hard to completely judge these things by some low quality video/recordings.  Looking forward to what they sound like on Friday...

Some hot stuff in that film. Kay giving head to James in that store ... etc.
