How big was the rivalry/competition between the Stones and Led Zeppelin during their peaks in popularity in the early-mid 70s?

I remember that era well, there was no rivalry or competition because there was so many other bands, there was Glam rock that was huge, there was Southern Rock, (Allmans/Lenoryd Skynard) there was big theatrical shows (Bowie/Alice Cooper) The Stones were huge & still are but never compared to other bands, there was so much happening.

I read somewhere recently (maybe Jim Marshall's book) that they were aware of where and when Zeppelin was touring so they wouldn't cross towns concurrently. Nothing about a rivalry at all...

the fans had a rivalry. Stones fans used to make more money, get better jobs, hotter lovers, better dope, dressed better and make Zep fans feel really bad about themselves…. and we still do!!!

Very typical...it has been stated that The Beatles and Stones had similar arrangements...never releasing singles in the same week...albums in the same month, etc...
I am too lazy to look up all the details...but i have read it in more than one source.

I agree with your first statement, however, I think that all that "better dope" clouded your judgement and got the 2nd part of your comment reversed. :weed :weed :weed

Always found it real easy to like both bands....Find Zep fans as over the top about their band as we can be though.

The Who were closer to true rivals as a live band 70-75

I enjoy listening to both bands!

After the Stones, Led Zeppelin is one of my favorite bands.

Agreed. there wasn't really a rivalry when the bands were both functioning in the 70's. As was said, there were so many different acts. Stones, Zeppelin, the Who, Queen, Kiss, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac ... all had their "own" deal. It was debatable, and at times, looked upon as to who was bigger, or the premeir rock act as either The Stones or Zeppelin... usually giving credit to both in magazines etc here and again. However there was no rivalry or competition among the bands, or fans.

The debate on who was better or the bigger act did not start until AFTER Zep had retired and AFTER the 70's had past sort of in a "looking back" sense... and that is only at times.

The more solid, and actual/realistic rivalry was naturally the Stones and The Beatles... in that being the biggest band rivalry of all time. Still, that was mostly the fans, and media, ... as we know...there was no real rivavlry between the two groups or their management. In fact, as we know, they were sort of friends to a degree.

Probably the top acts of the 70's for live shows were Stones, Zep, Elton, The Who - then maybe Kiss, Queen, Bowie etc. People forget how massive Elton was from about 72 - 76. Punk came along, and alot of the major bands had hassles. Stones with drugs, Zep with internal hassles (car accidents, Plant's child dying, Page's drugs), Who with Moons drink hassles, Pete's drug issues, then Keith's death, Elton's break down & confessed bisexuality. He had a pretty lean period from 77 - early 80's.
