Title: Happy Birthday Muddy Waters! Post by FPM on Apr 4th, 2013 at 4:22pm
Happy Birthday to Muddy Waters, born McKinley Morganfield 100 years ago today. There would absolutely be no Rolling Stones without him.
I took these pictures of the great man on Aug 29, 1980, at Mancini's in McKees Rocks PA. Sirmoonie's balliwick, I reckon. |

Holy shit, 100 years old... that officially makes the great man an Institution, doesn't it?
Muddy Waters is one of the first people who made me love the blues. I mean, the Stones were a great introduction, and Robert Johnson certainly captured my imagination early on. But Muddy Waters, man... he was inviting in a way that Robert J. was forbidding. Robert Johnson's music felt like hallowed ground, not to be trod upon but for the sacred few. Muddy, though, felt like a badassed elder statesman, inviting you to come and check out the mind-bending sounds he was making. And, hey, if you feel like it, join on in. Muddy Waters, for me, made the blues something I could understand and relate to that no other artist could. So happy birthday, Mr. Morganfield. I raise a glass to you, on this special day. I think I'll go spin Folk Singer for a while... |

The Best. No one does it better for me than Muddy Waters. 3/15/79 Paradise Theatre Boston. He was right in front of me, sitting on that chair, sweating & singing like his life depended on it. Listening to Hard Again right now, terrific comeback lp. Johnny Winter infused life into Muddy. You can have Elvis. Muddy is the man for me.
Thanks for those photos FPM, they are super. |

McKees Rocks is, or was, a bad section of Pittsburgh, or right outside it. Mancini's used to be a regular stop on the blues circuit. If it's still around I'd be surprised if Sirmoonie hadn't quaffed some moof piss there. And yeah, Muddy was what opened up the entirety of the Blues to me, too. Hard Again turned me into a true believer. All of a sudden it ALL made sense. |

Muddy is who turned me on to the blues. I regret never seeing him live.
