Ain't that the truth.

I recall Jimmy/Fang posting here quite a bit back a few years ago.
Very sad news.

I remember Fang very well from here and that other place.  I remember calling on him to weigh in as technical expert on the ridiculous notion someone had that Jagger played guitar on Highway Child.  Fang proved by algebra that it had to be Keith.

He turned 40 when we were dating, in 04, so he would have been turning 49 in June. It is sad. I hope he found happiness in the last years of his life. He really did have a great big heart. Like I said over at Gasland, RIP, babe. Will always have a place in my heart for Mr. Whitley.

I'm in shock again, he was a very good friend of mine, he was a great person one of the many I do consider a real friend, he was active here for many years

Really sad news again, shit!!

Without any doubt he was a great person and a great fan, he was really bright, funny, cool, very knowledgeable about rock, not just the Rolling Stones and he was sooooooooooooooooo Stone, stoner than Brian... Between many things he was the winner of one of our trivia, I’m sure it was the hardest; he won an original photograph by Fernando Aceves. This is him saying a public "thank you" to Rocks Off, he made the caption and sent this one to me

No.I am not Syph.Syph and I used to hang at concerts with Jimmy.Jimmy,Syph.and I had recently gone to see X here in Sacramento.Going to see X was a yearly thing, the next show won't be the same without Jimmy.Jimmy and I had gone to see Alice Cooper a few months back as well, whenever a band came near Northern California that Jimmy liked he would take me and turn me on to bands I really didn't know.He taught me a lot.And meeting the band after the show was always a given. He was fearless when it came to getting to meet the band.Anyway,I met She Rat(Erin) once when  they were dating,Jimmy still talked about you up until a few weeks ago.
Like Syph said Jimmy had Pneumonia that lead a heart attack, thanks for all the kind words I will pass them on to his family,Scot

Now my back pocket is empty.

God damn it.  I hate this fucking shit.

Just another thing I remember about the guy.  I met him once, like I said, then talked on the phone a few times, one was about 2-3 years after I met him.  Most intense conversation about women, sex, love, god, all those difficult topics.  We were both high/drunk on something, of course, but the guy was all emotions and expressing them.  He was almost female in that respect, which I recognized as a rare and admirable quality in men that he was one of the few to have.

I had no luck either. Steve Phelps was TTM's real name. He sent me a PM saying that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer, had about six months left and didnt want to go public but that he would just 'fade away quietly'.

He was last on here on 18th October 2008, which was about 2-3 months later. In accordance with his wishes, we kept his disappearance private until we did a thread for him on what would have been his birthday on March 27, 2009.

Amen LJ. I don't go as far back as some of you. But have come to love this site. Not just for our love of Rolling Stones. But for the most part this group avoids the petty ass pissing contests, fights, spamming and trolling that so often dominates the internet these days. Very sad to lose memebrs. but the fact that people care enough to take notice means that this is just another web site. Gazza and Voodoo are to me highly commended for their efforts in that. If I do take the plunge and pay the ridiculous ticket prices the Stones charge on this tour. I would probably only do it to meet some of you very nice people from this side and do things only the way Rocks Off can do it. :willya

No!!! This hurts my heart... Jimmy was a such a super nice guy. When I was a young Stonesling inhabiting the old GasGasGas board, he was beyond kind to a neophyte such as myself. I loved reading his informative posts, be they about guitars, music, or life in general. I learned a lot from him and, for that, I'll never forget him.

Also, he was the first person I ever saw use the article "The" in front of his name. I nicked that very quickly, and "The" Steve Cronen became my widely-accepted nickname from high school right up to present day. So I owe him that, as well. Thanks, Jimmy. I'll be raising a glass to you as soon as I can.

Do you remember how he got the name THE Jimmy Whitley? I think it was a misprint in a newspaper article but I can't recall right now.

Jimmy was so thoughtful to everyone...he had a chance to interview Joe Strummer once, and he contacted SS and I to see if there were any questions we wanted to ask since he knew how much we both admired Joe. And he gave SS a CD signed by Joe afterwards.

As a matter of fact, the only thing Jimmy ever did that pissed me off was dying.

Now you mention interviews - I remember he interviewed Ron Jeremy one time when The Hedgehog was doing a bit of promo work for the movie about his life. He asked me if I could think of a question to ask, so  I came up with one. (Decorum on a thread like this prevents me from saying exactly what it was). He took great pleasure in telling me afterwards that after being bored senseless being asked the same questions that he'd been asked a thousand times, Ron's face lit up when Jimmy asked him the one I'd suggested.

About ten years ago, I uploaded a photo of myself on a camel in Tangier. It was Jimmy who christened me 'Gazza of Arabia' and any packages I got sent from then on had that as my name on the front....I always liked that.

The 'Cardinal Fang' moniker, for those who don't know, came from the Monty Python 'Spanish Inquisition' sketch.

Sirstonesalot was known as Cardinal Ximinez for a while, if Im not mistaken.

from over there--->(in 1999, a thread about the Toronto show, wherein you, FPM, inquired:

"A "brief" story of the origins of the "THE Jimmy Whitley". Please allow me to introduce myself. I have ALWAYS been an individual. In my senior High School yearbook I actually was voted "Most Unique" and "Best Sense of Humor" (you notice no "most likely to succeed" though?) Anyway I get told a lot that I am "a character". As a kid I would go to our very large family reunion's where we would have name tags stating our name/parent name/grandparent name/etc. ( "Oh, you're so and so's grandson etc.) In my family it seems EVERY male Whitley has the first or middle name of James so you would see a lot of "Jimmy Whitley" name tags! (another reason for the parent/grandparent tag too) When I was about 12, I just decided there may be a few Jimmy Whitley at this picnic but I am "THE" Jimmy Whitley! The family got a kick out of it etc. Later in High School/College I had my own campus and radio and TV shows. On the High School TV show the introduction went, "The one, the only, THE Jimmy Whitley." So it sort of stuck. Flash forward to MODERN times now! When I started posting back on the GOIN'HOME board I knew that a lot of people from the U.K. were on it. There is this the real football star in England named Jimmy Whitley but I really know nothing about him. Anyway, you know how people will sometimes post under famous names of other people? I didn't want people to think I was just using this English the real football star dudes name so I resurrected the THE JIMMY WHITLEY bit."

That's right. SheRat, still the Boards Historian.

Oh man what a shame. I haven't been here in a while so I was completely unaware of Jimmy's passing. He was such a genuine guy. I only chatted with him on the phone a couple of times, but we hit it right off. We were very simpatico on so many levels. He called me at my radio station several years ago. I was on the air at the time, but we still talked for well over an hour. Great guy with whom I immediately clicked with. He made mention of perhaps coming to NYC should the Stones tour again, and he said he would like to get together and have a couple of beers and maybe catch a show at The Stone Pony, and see some of the sights in Asbury Park and the Jersey Shore. In a conversation that lasted just under two hours I really felt like I got to know the man. I'm happy for that. I only wish we could have had those beers, and seen that show at The Pony. He was a good guy that passed far too early. Golden journeys to The Jimmy Whitley.
