St. Patrick's Day Surprise: Guinness Beer May Contain Fish Bladder
Before you take a sip of Guinness this weekend, you might want to know this: there could be traces of fish bladder in your ale. The Smithsonian Magazine reports that the beer, which will sell 13 million pints on St. Patricks Day, is exposed to something called Isinglass, the air-bladder of fish like sturgeon that is added to the beer's cask to assist in separating the yeast and solid particles out of the final product after it's been brewed and fermented. The isinglass is a known fining or clarification agent. Explains the Smithsonian, "As the finings pass through the beer, they attract themselves to particles in the fermented beer that create an unwanted 'haziness' in the final product and form into a jelly-like mass that settles to the bottom of the cask." This method was described as far back as 1797, in an edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica Volume IX, which cites the research of the process by Pierre Pomet, chief apothecary to the King Louis XIV. Guinness, which began production in Dublin in 1759, starting using isinglass in the mid to late 19th century, reports the Smithsonian. But today, with modern gelatin, isinglass is not frequently used at most breweries. But Guinness made this recent statement: "All Guinness brands are free from animal matter and from contact with animal matter. However, isinglass, which is a by-product of the fishing industry, is used as a fining agent for settling out suspended matter in the vat. The isinglass is retained in the floor of the vat but it is possible that minute quantities might be carried over into the beer.” If this is of concern, German and Belgian beers do not use isinglass in their process due to the "purity laws" that went into effect in 1516. Despite the ruling being lifted in 1987, the purity process is still practiced. Are you going to think twice before grabbing a Guinness this St. Paddy's Day? Or will you still enjoy a pint (or two!)? |

Always happy to celebrate and honor my Irish heritage on St Paddy's Day.

Oddly enough, I don't. If I fancy a few drinks, I don't need a special 'day' for an excuse! ;D Its a day off work on Monday, so I'm happy enough with that. The appeal of it worldwide (especially amongst people who dont have Irish ancestry) utterly bewilders me - but I hope everyone who wants to mark it has a great time. |

An Irishman's Philosophy
In life, there are only two things to worry about— Either you are well or you are sick. If you are well, there is nothing to worry about, But if you are sick, there are only two things to worry about— Either you will get well or you will die. If you get well, there is nothing to worry about, But if you die, there are only two things to worry about— Either you will go to heaven or hell. If you go to heaven, there is nothing to worry about. And if you go to hell, you’ll be so busy shaking hands with all your friends You won’t have time to worry! _________________________________________ St Patrick may have driven out the snakes but at least he left these beautiful creatures. I had this last night:
Car Bomb Trifle ~ Guinness soaked chocolate pound cake, Bailey’s mousse, Jameson syrup with crunchy nut crumble and washed it down with ~ the Screamin’ Leprechaun, a green shot of something tasty. It was good and I was thinking about the Guiness fish bladder story but it didnt taste like fish at all! Chefs and bartenders are very inventive this year and I am impressed with the array of Irish delights! Going back for more stuff later! |
