Former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman is having an unusual art exhibit, February 21 to March 21 at the Rook & Raven Gallery in London.  According to U.K. newspaper The Independent, the exhibit features re-workings of his photographs, including shots of Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall, by contemporary artists including Wyman’s friend Gerald Scarfe, the creator of  Pink Floyd‘s art work for The Wall.

Wyman has a catalog of 20,000 photos, and he says he began learning about art while spending time in France in the 1970s with artist Marc Chagall.  “I met all these bloody great artists who are like gods -– Chagall, César, Arman -– and, although I was in awe of them they treated me as an equal.  They thought I was an artist of music,” Wyman recalls.

Of his return to the stage with his former band at their recent 50th anniversary shows, Wyman said his three teenage daughters — ages 18, 17 and 14 — were thrilled. “They’d been to Stones shows before but never seen me on stage with them, so that was kind of nice.  I did get some quite rousing applause when I went on.”

Now 76 years old, he will publish Bill Wyman’s Scrapbook, a limited-edition coffee-table book featuring rare photos, in March.

The Stones' drummer, Charlie Watts, gazes sardonically into the camera, relaxed and unguarded. In this case, the photographer was his bandmate Bill Wyman, who played bass for the band for 30 years, before leaving in 1993. Now Wyman has delved into his archives to showcase unseen pictures from four decades in a new exhibition beginning in London this week.

Now 76, the musician got his first camera – a Box Brownie – from his uncle when he was 11, but didn't start taking pictures seriously until 1966, while on tour in Paris. Speaking to The Independent on Sunday, Wyman said Watts was easygoing when it came to being photographed, but Mick Jagger was less so: "If you were shooting Mick, he'd get annoyed – unless it was for a fashion magazine or something."

Many of the photos have been "reworked" by artist friends of Wyman's. But it's not only band members who feature. "I take pictures of anything. I've got a selection of taxi-driver photos which are fantastic."

'Bill Wyman: Reworked' is at the Rook and Raven Gallery, London
