Title: Stones flatbed truck vs Beatles rooftop which one? Post by steel driving hammer on Jan 9th, 2013 at 4:44pm
Saw this question on another board and thought it was a good one.
I would like to know what the people here think which was better? Stones rolling through New York or the Beatles on top of a roof playing. I know the Stones played just a few songs while the Beatles did almost an entire album up there. For me, the Stones on a flatbed truck was more powerful and exciting, but the Beatles rooftop jam was good. I just can't see the Beatles doing what the Stones did on the flatbed. Anyone can play on top of a roof... |

This is a GREAT question...one which I find myself struggling to come up with an answer...
The rooftop was indeed special because it was a SWAN SONG and first public performance in 4 years...and people had to find it and were just so amazed and quiet, distant...even respectful,( remember the English Gent with the pipe???). It was a tribute to all things British, it seems. The English revere their pop culture as a very important part of their lives. The flatbed was a promotional tool...to show the world that it is still relevant and coming to your town soon. It was utter chaos in the noontime rush that is Manhattan...traffic, crowds, bedlam...everything Rock and Roll should be. I am not sure which was better...performance-wise...The Beatles...in the moment-wise...The Stones... I still struggle with a final answer....EXCELLENT question! |

..and, as the Stones freely admit, they got their idea from various jazz acts in the 30s. So, basically, they're both talentless Limey copycats ripping off less celebrated Americans. Thats it settled then. |

Not sure if that counts as it was nor filmed professionaly, but the Merry Pranksters did the coolest travel across the USA and the best acid tests
A lot of bands before that surely played on a rooftop, some garage bands and some "rooftop bands" :stinkypost (bad joke, I know) |

Both were great. Though I prefer the Stones on the flatbed truck, they had nothing on The Beatles when it comes to the impact of the performance.

Title: Re: Stones flatbed truck vs Beatles rooftop which Post by FPM on Jan 13th, 2013 at 10:02am Stones all the way on this one, using a marketing trick from the golden age of N'Awlins jazz, when a band played on the back of a wagon to advertise their gig later that night at a whorehouse. In this case they were announcing their biggest world tour to date. As opposed to the Beatles, who played on a rooftop because they couldn't get their shit together to play an actual gig. Not with a bang but a whimper. |

Inaccurate...the Beatles quit because the demands of touring...they were so far ahead of technology...there were no "stacks"...their music came out of those tiny ballpark speakers...they could not here themselves and the crown could not hear them...and they certainly could not do live justice to anything they made after 1966...their last show was 3 weeks after REVOLVER was released... they, became a studio band...and made music to be listened to...they missed playing live after a few years and some inner turmoil...said WTF...and played a few songs to celebrate what they were...a rock and roll band...without all the hoopla...press junket...hype...if you caught them there...it was a bonus...and that was it. Like i said before...I can't decide which was better...both monumental events in RnR history... is there a link to the entire Stones promo? Or just news clips, etc?? I may change my mind if i see some... |

from Wikipedia: "The plan was to give a live performance featuring new songs, broadcast as a television special and recorded for release as an album. (At one point McCartney considered launching a tour; however, the idea was quickly shot down by the other members.) Unlike their recent albums, their new material would be designed to work well in concert, without the benefit of overdubs or other recording tricks. Many ideas were floated concerning the location of the concert. Conventional venues such as The Roundhouse in London were discussed, but they also considered more unusual locations such as a disused flour mill and an ocean liner. The location that received the most consideration was a Roman amphitheatre in North Africa. None of the ideas garnered unanimous enthusiasm ... it was agreed to start rehearsals without a firm decision on the concert location. Around lunchtime on Friday, 10 January, tensions came to a head and Harrison told the others that he was leaving the band...at a meeting on 15 January, Harrison agreed to return with the conditions that elaborate concert plans be dropped...trying to come up with a conclusion for the film, it was suggested that the band play an unannounced lunchtime concert on the roof of the Apple building." from Ultimate Classic Rock: Ringo talking about the Fab Four’s initial plans for a farewell gig: “The four of us were thinking, ‘We’ll do it at the Pyramids, or we’ll do it in Hawaii in a volcano,’” Starr revealed. “We had all these big, grandiose ideas and at the end you say, ‘Sod it, just let’s do it on the roof.’” I think my initial comment ("they couldn't get their shit together to play an actual gig") is fairly accurate. |

I misunderstood your statement...I thought it was more directed at the time span between the last concert in SF in 1966 and and the roof top 3 years later...
and not so much as to the "final show" |
