Title: Most underrated Stones songs?
Post by StonesFan1990 on Dec 19th, 2012 at 11:56pm
What do you guys think are the most underrated songs by the boys (underrated in the mainstream)?
For me:

Worried About You.
Hand of Fate
Hey Negrita
Too Much Blood
Rock and a Hard Place
Lady Jane
Dandelion
Emotional Rescue
Some Girls
Tell Me
Mixed Emotions
Factory Girl
Heaven
If You Can't Rock Me
Winter
Dancing with Mr. D
Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)
Play with Fire
Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby?
2000 Lightyears from Home

There's tons of others. Some of these songs may have been well known and well received when they were released but are generally forgotten by the mainstream, at least people my age (early 20s)

From this list...

Winter
Hand Of Fate...all others were either MTV fodder...FM staples...of B side juke box hits...

r.e. Heaven...was all over TV as that was the main song played for the Tattoo You ( or Still Life)   TV commercials.

I actually didn't know people in their 20's really knew the Stones...they may know who they are ( that band my dad listens too) \
but not something they actually activly purchase...( Dude, they put out Albums!! ( not vinyl) )

Please understand...i don't put you down because of your age...i find your questions fascinating as well as amusing...i don't think that artist put out TV commercials anymore for albums, do they? i don't know,
I have 2 kids who are 7, so we don't have TV in the house.
But bands used to actually have TV commercials for their albums...and there is a Cable TV station called MTV ( Music Television) that used to show
music videos by bands, first for about 8 hrs a day...then for about 14 hrs a day...eventually they went to a 24 hr format supplemented by weird TV shows and and "dance parties". They also pioneered reality TV and specialty music shows like YO! MTV Raps and cartoons like Beavis & Butthead and Aeon Flux

Here is an article about the network: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mtv

The network was essentially "invented"by Mike Nesmith of the 60's TV show, The Monkees

Keep asking questions...that is how you learn!!

Emotional Rescue does more before 9am than most songs do all day.

That's easy:  "It's Not Easy"
The perpetual absence from "most underrated" lists of this Berryesque gem with the Dylanesque lyrics is proof of its supremacy among underrated Stones classics.

Brainy

I've always thought those two songs are musical cousins.

+1 on It's Not Easy Brainy.

It's the title cut and lead track of my "personal favorites from 66-67" compilation.

Out of the blue...a good friend explained how he has heard DOOM & GLOOM a few times and really likes it. He is 42.

He is not a huge Stones fan ( like this asylum)...but he made a very interesting comment,

He noted that while it is a very good song...even borderline KICK-ASS...had it been done
EXACTLY the same way
by Foo Fighters and Jack White...it would have been HUGE.

He was not referring to the Stones not being relevant any longer...just their lack of being marketable and connecting to the under 35 crowd...
a person who is 35 now...would have been 10 about the time DIRTY WORK came out...13 with Steel Wheels , 18 when VooDoo Lounge and about 21 when B2B was released...
Can you really blame them for not being grabbed by those 4 albums in the prime of their musical development??

THOUGHTS???

cant argue with the logic..people gravitate to bands or entertainers closer to their own age...ala the boy bands and Bieber for the kids. It took me until later 20's that I started to listen to the old blues tracks the Stones songs copied.Hell a brand new incredible Hendrix track released today without hip hop rap singing would likley lay an egg commercially.
