Title: Doom and Gloom has arrived at Universal offices
Post by mickijaggeroo on Oct 4th, 2012 at 3:28pm
Just got a call from a friend who works at Universal, he was very excited. His boss had called him in to his office, a mp3 had just arrived in the email, so they had a little listening party. Then he called me to brag :) What he said was that it was guitardriven, and a rocker. It seems this song will be the choice for airplay. He did´nt say any more, they are now waiting for the promos to arive from England i think. I hope to get back on the subject. i don´t post here often, but i thought you like to know anyway, even if the info was slim .

Rolling Stone magazine said that One Last Shot was the guitar driven song. Very interesting. Why didn't your friend let you hear the song over the phone?

Long time no hear from our Stones Viking friend and it's about time you dropped in again here, mate!! :) Well... how did your friend actually "rate" the song? Saying it's guitar driven and a rocker is awesome but we sort of already knew that. How good did he say it actually was? As well... ask him if it was standard generic rocker from them or was it something a bit different this time?

Nice to see you mate... have not heard much from you since A Bigger Bang was just about to come out in 2005 and you gave us some insight.

It´s because it was only his boss that got the file, and my friend and co-workers  had to listen to it in his office. I asked about the guitars, and my friend said the song was "guitar driven", he did´nt say if it was a rocker or not.
That´s all i got for the momentt  :)

Leak can't be too far now...I guess Mick's song wins again, Keith's "One Last Shot" had a more promising title though. Guitar driven is really not very informative, I mean which Stones songs are NOT guitar driven other than crap like "Losing my Touch" and "Out of Tears" ?

'Gloom & Doom' is, presumably, a jaunty ditty, with lovely tiddly bits soemwhat building on 'Mixed Emotions' ('Mick's E-Motions') and 'It Must Be Hell' and so on, and even 'Beast Of Burden' ('(I'll Never Be Your) Beef Curtains') and other elements befitting of, and playing with and counteracting, the curent time and groove and so on. I have trust in The Stains to root-me-rotten-and-ragged with a poignant, bottom-jigging, hoot-inducing and even transluscent single.

I'm kinda looking forward to G&D. Mick can be funny when he waxes political At the very least, he's more clever than when he sings about, say, beauties, cuties, and jello moons.

Thread title modified to give the song its correct title.

I love how after seven years the Stones release two new songs and there's mass confusion over what BOTH of them are actually called.  ;D

If the advance descriptions of the lyrical content of the song are accurate, can I be the first to express my disdain at the absurd notion of 70 year old men going out on the town dancing to anything faster than a waltz.

I wonder if instead of "Pre-production by Matt Clifford" for Mick's 40 Licks three tracks we'll get "Pre-production by Dave Stewart" for "Doom and Gloom", i.e. a SuperHeavy outtake !

My expectations are extremely low for this new tune.

As a precaution, I have made proper preparations to be able to heavily self medicate myself after hearing it.

Indeed, better be safe than sorry.

Best case scenario : Mick found an interesting tune while trawling the archives for the Exile and SG boxes and saved a tune...now the world will have the million dollar question (why was Fiji Jim left off of SG) answered !

I'd like to hear some details about the song before late tomorrow, maybe a review of some type. I would also like to be able to know some lyrics. I want this song to crush us! I want to be able to run an extra mile while listening to it, I want to bench 25 more lbs because of it. I wonder what the over/under is that Fox News is in the lyrics. I want the Stones to be hot!

I'm listening to the KFox feed. A previous poster said this station will play the new song today. This station is in the middle of their 9AM-Noon no break music marathon. If they are going to play it, it's going to be during rush hour - when most people are in their cars. I can't see them playing it in the middle of the day when nobody is listening.

The morning DJ said that the afternoon drive DJ may play it. I asked her for more info on her Facebook page, But have'nt heard back from her yet. But afternoon drive is 3-7 pm PDT.

Thanks, decent music anyway so I don't mind listening in. Is that Greg Kihn's station? Is it ad free on the air too or just in the feed? That's quite amazing.

It used to be Greg Kihn's station. Until he got canned a couple weeks ago. :loloncemore.......But I've reached out to three different local DJ's for info. Still searching.........But now I'm distracted by the Giants game. :-?

Wow... you really must hand it to them for their secrecy about matters in 2012. NOBODY has heard it, it hasn't been leaked anywhere. Nobody knows their full plans yet either.

Indeed, they tightened up significantly on their keeping everything official and if not official ....it's almost all under wraps. Not a peep or bleep of any of the new material like it's the old days or something. Even in today's Internet peeping Tom age, we got nada

- The new stuff has been kept completely hidden and we don't even know anyone who has claimed to of heard it or what it's like and it comes out in literally hours.... Indeed they really tightened up all the loose edges and kept it quite secluded. I mean Geez...it is going to be officially released to the airways in like, six short hours and NOBODY (no DJ...no record exec... no dude in promotions....no guy sweeping up at the studio....) is blabbing anything about it.... geesh.

In the name of flaming ar*eholes, will someone please post a link to 'Doom/Gloom & Gloom/Doom'. I have to take the spaniel for a walk, then have a good kip.

Has anyone heard the rumour that 'One Last Shot' (aka 'One More Shot') is, partly, Keith's paean-ean to James Last, the great band leader.
Sorry, I dreamt that. But seriously, over my beakfast cereals, I'm very keen on hearing the band's potentially greatest / most poignant ever single,  :smilemick  ... but, seriously, who sensible is listening to Chris 'Crisp' Evans, or whoever, so early in the  morning? It's madness. There are alternative universes in which people are prosecuted for getting up before 11.45am at the bare minimum.

I must have some shut-eye, but I suspect that 'Doom & Gloom' will be one of the most poignant and lovely ditties that Chuck W and the team have ever committed to vinyl.

Goo' night.

Off to a good start but runs out of steam and the bridge/solo are...unimpressive.

Sounds like "Driving Too Fast" part II really, one of the most boring songs on ABB, fortunately it's a bit better, thanks to that big beat. Reminds me of Sheryl Crow's "Gasoline" from 2008 too. Will be working on putting it on YouTube.

Some good parts and I love the riff but I have never understood why they use the techno drum beats. Charlie is more powerful than that. It's always too early to judge after a couple listens. Hurt sitting in the dirt was a little weak for a lyrical powerhouse like Jagger. Still, it's bring a smile to my face when I hear it and I'm just chuffed to bits that they have put out something new that I can listen to for a while. An album would have been nice boys.

Chris Evans was unbearable.

Was not what I was expecting... at first ...in the first minute I was not sure if I even liked it... then I started to. Kina cool.

Definitely different for them. Heavy beat, thicker guitars, odd melody... but something about it makes you want to hear it again.

Almost a sort of eastern (asian) guitar part in there here and again. Odd ... but not bad. Needs more time... I don't exactly get it. At the same time it really "thumps" along in it's production. A sort of different approach ...no doubt.

It is a sort of cross between 999 from Keiths solo album Main Offender and INXS's Wild Wild West is the best way I can describe the songs sound and texture and how it is put together. It isn't exactly poppy though, just danceable. It is not "standard" Stones ...

It's Rock N Roll but has pop sensibility, without it being light, or glossy at all. It has a groove that may get you dancing and shaking about. It's got something but I'm not sure what it is.

It seems the version from the album will be different with more guitars and a "real" drumming...So the folllowing message is based on the Youtube version..

Well...the good points:

Good drumming, I love the snare sound.
Guitar sounds great : it rocks!
Lyrics with no " Fantasy" and "cards on the table" words.
Good Production, it 's modern and I love it.
Catchy , grow up and up in your head.

the bad:

Riff ala young "You got me Rocking"
Good break but should be longer with this ambience.
the rest of the lyrics
Jagger voice sounds sometimes forced and tired.
The band still has no bass player, what a shame!
No guitar solo while our Donald seems on fire with a killer sound on this track.

Too bad they won't do a record in this mood ! 6,5/10 for me.

I've tried to get the lyrics down - any suggestions for the '?' before the word 'rich'?

Musically, I like the song and it has a few hooks that make me want to listen again (e.g. the lead in after chorus into verse). Mick's hallmark of riffing the vocals are definitely present towards the end of the song, but on a whole I thought his voice sounds strained, overly loud and eventually irritating.

I can imagine it'd be good live though

But the lyrics?.....Sittin in the dirt?.....where are those Jagger phrases that we all love and use at the end of our posts...great stuff from Exile etc.....little effort to be creative word wise and the guitars sound like We Dont Wanna Go Home........anyway maybe it will grow on me but its nothing great right now. The boom boom boom part and no Charlie featured?......they mailed it in

I like it.
Lyrically its …meh.
But the guitars and drums are great, Mick sounds great.

I wasn’t expecting anything that great. So for the first time in ages it’s good that they exceeded my expectations

I only found the version on iTunes (deluxe version?)
Where are the others?
One reviewer on the web said his version had a harmonica solo? Mine didn’t

Mick probably had most of the song worked on in his own studio before the band got anywhere near it - which is why he's more prominent on it.  They only recorded for about four days, dont forget.

Similarly, I'd expect the other song - which was apparently Keith's - to have more of his stamp on it than this one.

These days, its a pretty natural way of working and result for a band whose songwriters dont compose together and who would demo their songs separately.

It’s been six years since the last one, and over 20 years since the last hit, but the new Rolling Stones single sounds very, well, Stones-y. For which, I suppose, we must be grateful. At least they haven’t gone dubstep.

In defiance of advancing years and creaking bones, Doom & Gloom is an energised, uptempto blues attack built around a raw Keith Richards and Ron Wood slashing rhythm guitar riff, meshing thrillingly with a Muddy Waters style blues harp and underpinned by Charlie Watts tight and minimal backbeat. This gritty, dirty groove is topped off with one of Jagger’s shouty, one-note blues holler vocals that gets in your ear and yacks away like a headache. The frontman makes each line last several seconds beyond its natural end point, turning “road” into “ro-o-o-o-o-oa-d” and (rather impressively) “explode” into “explo-o-oa-o-o-oa-aa-deh”, overstretching syllables with a relish that would make Liam Gallagher weak at the knees.

With long verses sustained on one chord, and Jagger yelling over a familiar blues progression on the chorus, the immediate impression is not a million miles from Exile On Main Street’s basement rock. The texture of the interplay on the backing track has hints of Gimme Shelter, and the defiant aggression of the vocal touches on Street Fighting Man but the song itself never quite takes off, hammering away with the kind of heavy handed of gusto of veterans chasing the inspiration of their youth. It lacks the real juice and wayward spirit of those bygone days.

A big part of the problem is Jagger’s voice, which is (as it has been on recordings since the late Seventies) just a bit too high in the mix, too assertively dominant. Jagger has suggested this is a political song but it is the glib politics of laissez faire, a non-voter’s protest anthem. Smartly turned couplets evoke crashing aeroplanes, zombies in Louisiana, overseas war, tightening screws, mounting garbage and endless news of “doom and gloom” but the singer’s complaint is not really about the state of a deteriorating world. He’s just a bit grumpy about being subjected to all this bad news when all he really wants to do is dance. This kind of stuff might sound nihilistically charged from a street fighting 17-year-old but just sounds little bit glib from a 70-year-old.

The best bit is when he stops singing and starts blowing. There is a fantastic, swampy guitar and harmonica interlude in the middle, in which Charlie shifts to the offbeat and the band lock into a down and dirty groove. It’s a reminder of everything the Stones do so well, indeed, better than anyone else. Doom & Gloom may not be a classic single but it at least sounds like they are trying to recapture the spirit that made them the world’s greatest rock and roll band, and having fun doing so.

another review from NME

Currently you can go to the Channel Four website and book your seat on the plane crash to see if you’d survive. If the new single from The Rolling Stones – ‘Doom And Gloom’, released as a download this morning - is right, though, surviving would be the worst possible option. Not only would you find yourself stranded in zombie-infested wasteland and having to shoot your way out, you’d be in the company of “(i)drunk and insane(i)” fellow survivors with no idea how lucky they’ve been: “(i)sitting in the dirt, feeling kinda hurt/And all I hear is doom and gloom(i)”.

That, fifty years into their career, they can come up with a song that opens like a mission from Dead Island (“(i)Crash landed in the Louisiana swamp/Shot up a horde of zombies, but I come out on top(i)”) and also unwittingly mimics Baldrick’s poetry (“(i)when those drums go boom boom boom(i)”) speaks volumes for their continued playfulness – they’re a pension-worthy band with the hearts and souls of petulant teenage freaks. That they go on to drop sly references to the Iraq invasion – “(i)lost all that treasure in an overseas war(i)” – and social inequality is testament to their sophistication, and that the whole thing is wrapped up in a tune reminiscent of their peak period makes for a rare combination of wisdom and enthusiasm. It sounds like a ‘Gimme Shelter’ for Generation Wii.

Keef’s riffs are fresh as ever, Jagger yelps, claps and croons about getting hammered like he’s still living it up down the LSE bar and there’s a Zep-tastic breakdown that thankfully stops the whole thing sounding too much like Primal Scream’s ‘Rocks’ – a concept that would launch music into an inescapable loop of influence as confusing as a bad time travel plot. No, the first new Stones song in seven years is a revitalising reminder of what made them great in the first place, a tune that will sit seamlessly amongst their classics. Are you listening, Macca?

Fans like song recorded after the band reunited in a studio for the first time in seven years

LAST UPDATED AT 09:32 ON Thu 11 Oct 2012

THE Rolling Stones have debuted a new single – a product of the band’s first studio session together in seven years. The single, Doom and Gloom, was premiered on Chris Evans’s Radio 2 show this morning. A lyric video (below) is now available on YouTube and the single can be bought from iTunes.

First reactions are generally positive, with The Daily Telegraph’s music critic Neil McCormick saying the single “has hints” of the Stones classics Gimme Shelter and Street Fighting Man, while Jagger overstretches syllables "with a relish that would make Liam Gallagher weak at the knees".

Doom and Gloom is one of two new singles recorded by the Rolling Stones for a new hits album called Grrr!, which will be released on 12 November. The other single, yet to be aired, is called One More Shot.

The new material came about after Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood got together in a Paris studio for the first time in seven years. The new singles are produced by longtime Rolling Stones producer Don Was, who has worked with the band on five previous albums (Voodoo Lounge, Stripped, Bridges To Babylon, Licks Live and A Bigger Bang).

Doom and Gloom has been received warmly by fans on Twitter. One describes it as "pure pub rock, done so, so well", while another cheers: "At last, something decent in the charts”. The consensus appears to be that "the Stones have still got it".

The Sun is equally enthusiastic, describing it as a "stomping comeback" and "arguably their best single since 1981 hit Start Me Up". The paper adds: "With a dearth of decent contemporary guitar music to get excited about, the Stones show young upstarts how good rock 'n' roll can be when it's done with craft and heart."

At the Telegraph, Neil McCormick writes: "In defiance of advancing years and creaking bones, Doom & Gloom is an energised, uptempto blues attack.”

But he adds that it "lacks the real juice and wayward spirit of those bygone days". Jagger's voice is "just a bit too high in the mix" and the lyrics – about the endless news of doom and gloom – might sound "nihilistically charged from a street fighting 17-year-old but just sounds little bit glib from a 70-year-old".

There is no blues version, the iTunes version is a "clean mix", the radio/video version is a "jungle mix" ;-)

The harmonica is heard in the bridge, it's that wailing sound, pretty well done, similar but dirtier than in "Break the Spell".

Woke up to this in my in box from the Stones themselves. How thoughtful. Not sure what version I listened to. But I liked it. Nice riff. You have to get used to the Jagger growling constipated style of singing. But it's still better than Start Me Up. Of course a cat in a blender would be better than start me up. This is what I've gathered from the iTunes version (not the lyric video version)

Doom and Gloom
Jagger/Richards

I had a dream last night,
I was piloting a plane,
And all the passengers were drunk and insane,
I crash landed in a Louisiana swamp,
Shot up a horde of zombies,
But I come out on top,
What’s it all about?
Guess it just reflects my mood,
Sitting in the dirt, feeling kind of hurt.

And all I hear is doom and gloom,
And all is darkness in my room,
And through the light, your face I see,
And baby take a chance, baby won’t you dance with me?

Lost all the treasure in an overseas war,
Just goes to show you don’t get what you pay for,
Bowing to the rich and you worrying about the poor,
Put the feet up on the couch and lock all the doors,
What’s that funky noise?
I guess they tightening up the screws,
Sitting in the dirt feeling kind of hurt.

All I hear is doom and gloom,
But when those drums go boom boom boom,
And through the night, your face I see,
And baby take a chance, baby won’t you dance with me?
Yeah! Baby won’t you dance with me? Ah yeah!

(Guitar solo)

Fracking deep for oil,
But there’s nothing in the sump,
The kids are picking at the garbage dump,
I’m running out of water, so I better prime the pump,
I’m trying to stay sober, but I end up drunk,
We’ll be eating dirt living on the side of the road,
Got some food for thought,
Gonna make your head explode!
Feeling kind of hurt – yeah!

And all I hear is doom and gloom,
And all is darkness in my room,
And through the night your face I see,
Baby take a chance, won’t you dance with me?
Yeah! Come on! Baby won’t you dance with me?
Feeling kind of hurt, baby won’t you dance with me?
Oh yeah!
Sitting in the dirt, baby won’t you dance with me?

from the New York Times:

Over the course of their career the Rolling Stones have revealed themselves to be a surprisingly neurotic band: keeping tallies of your nervous breakdowns, pleading to be given shelter and wondering – we’re just paraphrasing here – if they’d ever attain any measure of satisfaction in their lives. Now, on their first single in six years, and at an average age of 68 1/4, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts have declared, once and for all, that all is “Doom and Gloom.” This song, which made its debut Thursday on BBC Radio 2 (and which we were pointed to by Stereogum) is one of two new tracks that will be included on “GRRR!”, a multi-disc greatest hits compilation that will be released on Nov. 12 to celebrate the band’s 50th – 50th?, yes 50th – anniversary. “Gloom and Doom” finds the Stones in classic, apocalyptic blues-rock-stomp mode, but with its contemporary references to shooting up hordes of zombies (and hydraulic fracturing), will it be their first track to find its way onto a trailer for “The Walking Dead”?

http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/11/the-rolling-stones-bemoan-gloom-and-doom/

And the Riffy-approved Fox News version:

The Rolling Stones aren't done yet.

To help celebrate an astonishing 50 years on or near the top of the rock and roll heap, the band has recorded and is releasing a new single, 'Doom and Gloom,' as part of their upcoming collection 'GRRR! Greatest Hits.'

'Doom and Gloom' marks the first time Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood have been in the studio together in seven years. Produced by longtime Stones producer Don Was, the single is a straight ahead rocker with a somewhat more modern sound than even the Stones' most recent offerings.

A 'lyric video' of the single is now viewable on YouTube (below), and the song is available for download on iTunes.

Rolling Stones release new single, reviews mixed
LONDON (Reuters) - The Rolling Stones released new single "Doom and Gloom" on Thursday, their first new song in over six years, and early reviews were mixed.

Celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, the British rock veterans behind "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Honky Tonk Women" have gone back to their roots in a fast-tempo, blues track described variously as "gritty", "dirty" and "swampy".

Doom and Gloom is one of two new songs on their upcoming greatest hits album "GRRR!", which hits shelves on November 12, and there was a sense of relief among critics that the track sounded like the Stones of old.

"Received music industry wisdom has it that new Rolling Stones material exists purely to flog compilation albums or tour tickets," wrote Dan Silver in the Mirror tabloid.

"It's with some relief that we report it's actually rather good," he added in a three-out-of-five star review.

Neil McCormick of the Daily Telegraph also gave Doom and Gloom three stars, saying it was "business as usual" for the band and drawing comparisons between the song and the "basement rock" of their acclaimed 1972 album "Exile on Main Street".

Both critics argued that the song's weakest point was lead singer Mick Jagger's vocals.

"The best bit is when he stops singing and starts blowing," said McCormick of the harmonica interlude.

Silver praised the "nicotine-stained chords" of Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards on guitars and Charlie Watts's "customary magic" on the drums, but added:

"If there's a weak link here then it's actually Jagger, who honks and caterwauls over the track like one of his own tribute artists. His extended enunciation is excruciating - almost to the point of parody in places."

Music magazine NME called Doom and Gloom a "'Gimme Shelter' for Generation Wii.

"The ... new Stones song ... is a revitalizing reminder of what made them great in the first place, a tune that will sit seamlessly amongst their classics. Are you listening, Macca?" it concluded, in a challenge to ex-Beatle Paul McCartney.

Doom and Gloom and GRRR! are part of a series of events to celebrate half a century of the Stones, one of the world's most successful and influential rock and roll bands who started out on July 12, 1962 at the Marquee Club in London's Oxford Street.

The rockers walk the red carpet at the London film festival next week for the premiere of a documentary called "Crossfire Hurricane" and they also published a photograph album in July.

The Museum of Modern Art in New York stages a film retrospective opening on November 15 and the Stones are even helping to decorate London's famous Carnaby Street this Christmas.

Doom & Gloom rocks and it's mainly all due to CHARLIE! He's banging those skins the hard way, just the way I like it! Good guitars too, love the song, digging it. My only complaint is MICK is too loud in the mix and too clear, I liked it better when he slurred the vocals somewhat making it difficult to understand and that sounds like a dumb complaint, but maybe MICK needs to light up a blunt and down a few cocktails before he goes to work, just like the old days!  :weed :booze :warhorse :keithpunky

I DONT HEAR CHARLIE,I HEAR HAND CLAPS AND DRUM MACHINE.THEY ADD A LITTLE CHARLIE AT THE VERY END.
THIS SOUNDS LIKE A MATT CLIFFORD PREPRODUCTION.
I DONT HATE IT.
ITS SOUNDS LIKE MICK'S DEMO WITH A LITTLE OF THE BAND SPRINKLED IN.

It's definitely "sharper", the guitars really slash on that one, not sure who's playing it, Mick or Keith ? The radio/video version has a cool "jungle" feel to it though with that swampy lead rythm by Mick (most likely) and the relentless drums.

ONNYA was probably a better song, as in having an actual melody, unfortunately the recorded version is weak, the PC version was more promising. Given the same production attention as D&G it would certainly have been more memorable.

Michael claimed it was a quickie to make. It's a hugely nuanced and gorgeous single from the jumping masters.

Gawd knows what must be going on in Pari', but all - by this account - seem chipper, rootsy, comedic, dirty, explosive, gay and rather quintessential.

Is it inappropriate to wear knickers with a tonguey-gorilla thereon?  The jury's still out, lingerie-wise, but bottoms in this household are more than thoroughly enjoying the 2012 Stains.

Okay, I have given it the requisite number of listenings now.

I don't think it is anything ground breaking, but it sure has that classic Stonesy groove.

And it's good to hear Jagger singing a lil' sloppy instead of sounding like a Rosetta Stone CD.

Seems to me that it is the naturally groovy song they were trying to find for ABB but never quite found.
Sorta like Driving Too Fast, but less forced.

I'd give it a solid A.

It's shirley the blues, 72Tele. Pasty-faced and silly as sin, but definitely the blues, in my hairs on the nape of the neck of the woods.

The most important question, perhaps - or maybe the least - is:  what is said after the guffaws/chuckle-ohs at the end of Doom & Gloom, after CW's end-tingles?

50 Years, of course, is a mere trifle as far as these crazy beautiful tw*ts are concerned.

Title: Re: Doom and Gloom has arrived at Universal office
Post by Ian Billen on Oct 12th, 2012 at 11:44pm

Gloom and Doom is edgy and hefty...also "Swampy" as someone put it. I gotta say, it's a curve-ball more over from what we expected.

Jagger sings about zombies, and for some reason it has a kina sinister, heavy groove that conveys a sort of zombism somehow. Don't know why... it just has a stark darkness to the song that could convey the likes of Armageddon and Zombies ...which is what the guy sings about. It rocks. ...and a little something nobody mentioned is ....it's .... "fun". As Gazza said, it kinda makes you wanna dance around with your hog hanging out or something... as silly and ridiculous as that sounds. Certainly not "fun-happy", not "fun-light", it just has a fun way about it without it being a-typical, because "a-typical" ..it is not.

Perfect song for the season and it goes right in line with current affairs.

I commented that I had hoped we didn't get any sort of standard, generic Stones rocker. We needed something different... with edge, something even unconventional (some might argue for the most part it's basic Stones but to me it's mostly unconventional besides the actual chorus... The melody, production, breaks...very different), yet still Stones.. and still rock.

We got it. Very well done lads. At first I was not sure... but now I think it has hit the mark as we wanted.

Ian

It would be the ideal opener for a show. After so long, and knowing this is probably the last time, they could just come out and wave to the crowd for 5 minutes. So, to at least play something new, this would be a great opener. And means it go down like a lead balloon at song number 3 or so.

Exactly! And they can have an inflateable gorilla too. Who cares? It gets it all out the way, and Gloom is a decent rocker too. I'm quite pleased with the amount of positive coverage they are getting. It's a good replacement for a 2nd string song like you got me rocking. And plundered my soul (though maybe in my opinion a bit too much like tumbling dice) could replace something like miss you.

The new songs since 2002 like Gloom continue to make me appreciate what a fine album Bridges to Babylon turned out to be.

And that's either Ron Wood or a dead Jimmy Miller on drums for Gloom and Doom.

After having read all of you , i think that new stones is a low Cost  one !
Most of people who don't know anything about the rolling stones say it's a good one , because they cook it well , a little bit of open G guitar , a meowing Jagger , a boring Charlie playing , ron as he is,and some studios bank of sounds , and the track is in the box .
This track is a Gimmick
I'm sure they can be better and certainly on stage , we will see it soon  :willya

I agree.  They fucked up naming the new release GRRR, imagine if the first song in 7 years was something equally as cringe-worthy.  Or worse yet, Keith was nowhere to be found.

This a a good song.
Catchy Keith riffs, damn fine Jagger vocals, groovy, dancable yet not soft....
Gotta say I am liking it more on every listen.
And it is nice to see they are getting great reactions from casual fans and mutants.

I'm a mutant.
And proud of it...

Thanks, I'm there now. I piddled in the basement and washed cars while playing it. What we got here is a good song.

So Mixed my ass.....universal acclaim and good comments everywhere and I can't remember that for ANY new Stones release ever....It grows on you....just played it loud on my Bose car stereo and you can really hear the guitars and drums way better. Imagine if One Last Shot is this good...lol..or better!

The i tunes version IS the 'Grrr!' CD version.

And yes, it is - IMO - better than the 'radio edit' (ie, You Tube) version.  Keith is certainly more prominent in the mix. Charlie too.

We got them to play at our HS in '74, it's still talked about.  We also had Springsteen play at our college in '72

Very good song, though not great.  I'd give it a B, and it might grow to a B+ over time, we'll see.  The riff is very good and Jagger's voice is solid.  Charlie is great.  The lyrics are good in spots and hackneyed in other spots, especially the chorus parts.  Hurt/dirt, seeing her face through the night, wanting to dance - that's not original at all and I don't really see it fitting with the verses.  If it wasn't for the chorus parts this could have been special.

Well this unexpected success might encourage them to slap an album together for early next year...a short 10 song effort, only 8 to go, 16 days and that's it.

Not sure they can sustain interest for a full album though...What worked here I think is that they didn't lose interest only having to focus for 4 days.

At the current rate of 2 songs every 7 years...we would have to wait another 28 years for that album

Unless you have inside info Gazza, I don't agree. Mick has always been adamant that the lifeblood of the Stones has been creating new music. I know the output is seriously down but I still suspect they will make records or record songs as long as they physically can. Also, watch the Charlie Rose interview when he says his songwriting partnership with Keith will always endure. I just think that deep deep down (very deep, I know) they love the whole process of getting together and doing it. There are serious personal issues that seemed to have never died between him and Keith and I think Life was a lot more serious than people think, but I think they will eventually call each other up and play in a studio. What I think is dead for sure are the big tours. No surprise for anyone there but I will miss that just as much because it was always incredibly exciting to go to different places around the world and see your favorite band.

No inside info and I'm no Nostradamus, but one album of new material in 15 years from a band who arent a boot in the balls off 70 years of age and dont have any contractual obligation to make new music doesnt suggest much of a creative drive.  Agree with the end of big tours for sure, but in an era where recording and releasing new music appears to be a dying art and the band are driven primarily by money, I cant see them being arsed with it.

I think continued tweaking of old outtakes is a more likely scernario.

Dont hate it as much as I used to (musically its excellent), but coming as it did after the Some Girls album which really got me into the Stones, the reaction when first hearing the opening lines of a song which sounded like a cross between the Bee Gees and Mick Jagger having weights tied to his scrotum before being attached to a rocket blasting off from Cape Canaveral was pretty disconcerting and traumatic to say the least.

I'm thinking that this Doom and Gloom had a pretty soft launch. A few Twitter announcements and an email blast and this thing blew up to 2 million hits. For those who watch the NFL - did the Stones announce anything about the video or the new single during their Legend to Legend tie in?

I think I need to focus on just enjoying the fact that it's 2012 and the Stones are releasing two new songs and giving serious signs that there's going to be live gigs. Two new songs is better than nothing, so I'll take it and like it! Charlie's band will soon be hitting a stage!

I am seriously enthralled someone here has my take on their possibilities in the future. Wick, hats off to you. Gazza, The Stones very well may record again as in another album.... why wouldn't they?

They can't just do six or ten shows here and there... sooner or later ...they are not going to be guaranteed this big paycheck as they are getting right now for these.

An album wont do much for selling the concerts at all...but it's something for them to do (at their pace) and they are still showing
interest in recording... after all they got a brand new single out. Sure... it is for a greatest hits but seriously...it was not really needed...

As far as the money foes....guy that is almost a non-issue to them on whether or not they want to get together and do something at this point I am sure. They have millions and millions, an astounding legacy, and..... they are 70 years old..... Charlie wouldn't do this, neither would Mick and Keith if they didn't love it.

They plan on continuing ... just differently... and in Micks words...he and Keith plans on writing together shall endure as long as it's viable. My thought is there will be at least one more album.  They still have an interest in recording together and writing together. It just is not anywhere NEAR as it used to be ....not even in the same ball park to be (there is no argument there from any of us).

However there is solid interest and a want at times (just not as consistent as they used to be) ,,,and that time will hopeffully come once again (provided they are in health and ok shape).

Please tell me your thoughts - (though I am guessing they will be the same as always). Btw...the song from the sound of it seems like if they really hunkered down, they could make another darn good album... (the energy is still there and so is a solid sound).

Ian

That was pretty much my feelings towards it too. A big disappointment at the time. But I have grown to appreciate it more and more . As you say Gazza, musically it was excellent but the lyrics and vocal style left me more than a little dumbfounded.  Now I see the inherent humour in that "knight in shining armour/ arab charger" couplet which at first I thought was ridiculous (in a bad way). It was a good as it made me think WTF is going on here, which is what great music does, Getting what you expect is satisying but without a challenge to pre-concieved ideas.

That said, I still see no redeeming features in "Let's Work" despite it considerable "shock value".

Gloom And Doom
by the Rolling Stones

I had a dream last night
That I was piloting a plane
And all the passengers were drunk and insane
I crash landed in a Louisiana swamp
Shot up a horde of zombies
But I come out on top
What's it all about?
It just reflects my mood

Sitting in the dirt
Feeling kind of hurt
Aaaaall I hear is doooom and gloom
And aaaaall is darkness in my room
Through the light your face I see
Baby take a chance
Baby won't you dance with meeeeee

Lost all that treasure in an overseas war
It just goes to show you don't get what you paid for
Battle to the rich and you worry about the poor
Put my feet up on the couch
And lock all the doors
Hear a funky noise
That's the tightening of the screeeeews

I'm feeling kind of hurt
Sitting in the dirt
Aaaaall I hear is doooom and gloom
But when those drums go boom boom boom
Through the night your face I see
Baby take a chance
Baby won't you dance with meeee
Yeah
Baby won't you dance with meeee
Oh yeah

Fracking deep for...
But there's nothing in the sump
There's kids all picking
Ar the garbage dump
I'm running out of water
So I better prime the pump
I'm trying to stay sober
But I end up drunk

We'll be eating dirt
Living on the side of the roooaaad
There's some food for thought
Kind of makes your head explode
Feeling kind of hurt
Yeah

But aaaall I hear is doooom and gloom
And aaaaall is darkness in my room
Through the night your face I see
Baby come on
Baby won't you dance with me
Yeah
Yeah
Baby won't you dance with me
I'm feeling kind of hurt
Baby won't you dance with meeeee
Yeah
Come on
Baby won't you dance with me
I'm sitting in the dirt

After the initial thrill of hearing that song the other day, it was pretty sobering to realise afterwards that it'll probably be the last time we experience that 'brand new Rolling Stones record' rush that we've got over the years when theyve unveiled 'premieres'.

If Mick Jagger is healthy enough to go out and perform, and do other things, I simply can't see him continuously tweaking out-takes from other albums from thirty years ago in keeping his attention.

Amazed he's done it once, and then again...especially almost back to back. This alone, at every juncture with The Stones from here on out will never keep his interest. He will have to do something eles. If he is going to go into the studio again with The Stones, for the next time anyway, I am sure it will be to work on new material ...not tread water from old albums from past decades. Definitely not the Mick Jagger we know.

Not saying they won't try that again, but next time I am sure Mick would want to do something fresh if The Stones are to record. After the documentary, greatest hits, Exile, and Some Girls re-issue not to mention a book and a set of special anniversary shows I am sure if he hooks up, or continues with The Stones he will want something fresh and new. Mick isn't in to working on projects concerning the past anyway ...for the most part. All of us were very surprised he revisited two albums. He always wants to do something new (so long as he still can).  Going into the studio to revisit another previous album from their past the next Stones project will never cut it with him. IF that is to occur once again right away... it will be very evident that they finally lost all interest in recording fresh material together and I don't think that is the case.

"We'll be eating dirt, Living on the side of the road' is party-ly a reference to "There's some lovely filth down here" in MP & the Holy Grail, shirley. Swamp Castle and so on.
Ok, probably not, but there's some blooming marvellous stuff in the hairy-air, if I'm not Miss Shaken.
Mr Richards considered a career in plumbing apparently and the saucy Stains certainly seem to be plumbing the heights at the mo.
