Title: Happy Birthday Antietam! (nsc)
Post by Starbuck on Sep 17th, 2012 at 12:20pm
Happy birthday to Antietam, the bloodiest day in US history and my 3rd favorite Civil War battle! 150 years old today. She doesn't look a day over 134.

To celebrate, let's all drink a pina colada and watch Matthew Broderick cowardly fall on the ground and fall asleep during the middle of the battle:

Ah, I knew her when her name was Sharpsburg!

It also marked the first time that the American public actually saw pictures of the dead. It was probably a bit of a come-down compared to Currier & Ives' colorful representations of the glory of war.

Today is my son's 21st birthday, too - Michael, the one that Glencar thought was my
girlfriend, or whatever that stupid story was - and he inherited my civil war geekiness,
as well as the dreaded bass-playing gene. We've walked the battlefield at Antietam
together several times, and were planning on taking in this year's Antietam re-enactment,
but alas, I don't get around as well as I used to.

So, if Antietam is your third favorite civil war battle, what are #1 and #2?

I've always had a thing for Chancellorsville. And of course Gettysburg is in my neck of the woods, so I've visited there more than any other battlefield.

Thanks, Joey! I'll tell him you said happy birthday.

Today is also the birthday of the great Hank Williams - the REAL one, the genius American song-
writer; NOT the racist homophobic embarrassment known as Bocephus. I used to think Bocephus
was a mis-spelling of Alexander the Great's horse Bucephalus (it means "ox-head" - that would
make sense for Jr.), but actually Bocephus was a ventriliquist's dummy on the Grand Ole Opry.

Hank III is proof that good musical genes often skip a generation.

Your second favorite battle is Cold, Cold Heart?

I think you mean the Battle of Cold, Cold Harbor.

Who ever thought the day would come when we would be trading Civil War/Hank Williams puns on a Rolling Stones board?

This tells me either that (a)we are smart, elite minds, or (b) we need a f*cking tour.

Tramp on the Longstreet?
