The Rolling Stones on ‘Exile on Main Street’ Tour: Rare Photos

Photographer Jim Marshall covered the Rolling Stones during their “Exile on Main Street” tour in the summer of 1972. His photographs during the “cocaine- and tequila sunset-fueled 1972 tour,” as Joel Selvin writes, is now collected in a new book, “The Rolling Stones 1972,” including rarely seen, intimate photographs of the group backstage, during pre-show, and in concert.

“He never tried to manufacture an image to suit a musician,” Selvin writes in the book’s introduction. “He photographed them as he saw them and, in his eyes, these people looked larger than life, which is how he brought them to us.”

In a foreword, Keith Richards writes, “Jim Marshall said it all: It’s a matter of access. Once Jim was in, he was another Stone.”

Marshall’s Rolling Stones work is also on display at the Steven Kasher Gallery in New York until September, and as part of the Experience Music Project in Seattle until January.
