Well, well, well...or maybe an extended version of Extreme Monkey Grip ? I had completely forgotten about these "songs" until I took a peak at Martin Elliott's new book on his website.

I'm almost forbidding myself to show any interest in any new stuff they put out, I've been suckered into liking it on first listen since...UC, nearly 30 years ago and frankly what's the memorable stuff they've given us over that period of time? Well at least it was fun while it lasted.

The u-view app mentioned in that teaser on their facebook site relates to Universal Music (thanks, Lefty, for pointing that out). So, I would imagine that the 'big news' theyre teasing their fanbase with is related to an upcoming release as opposed to an announcement about concert activity (I'll stick my neck out and say that - contrary to Mick's off the cuff comment to a journalist in London last month - I honestly don't think there will be any Stones concerts in 2012).

Universal will be releasing a multi-disc career-spanning compilation in the near future - supposely in November, but in time for the Christmas market at least. As I understand it (although this isnt confirmed) there will be a DVD included (I presume this will be a compilation of promo videos or something).  I would expect SOME new and/or previously unreleased songs to be included.

Dont know how many discs we're talking about here but as it would tie in with 50 Years, I'd assume it'll be three audio discs (ie, enough for 50 songs). Whether there'll be extra discs worth of unreleased material I havent a clue but it would be a bit of a waste if they didnt have a tiered pricing structure which would include the option of additional unreleased material for the 'non casual fans' who already own several compilations and need a bit of a carrot dangled in front of them to get excited about this.

Its all about nothing Im afraid......a dsic or 2 of outakes like Streets of Love IV hardly inspires me.

I agree. The DVD could quite possibly include the recently re-mastered music videos that have been appearing periodically on the band's Youtube

It might just be a new itunes app, which makes it easier for us to buy merchandise...

They are recording in Paris this week! Just for one week is the plan as they have a couple of new tracks to record. Don Was is out there along with Chuck & Darryl. Not sure what the purpose of these tracks are, suppose its to do with the 50th.

Well, whilst I did send you that info privately on Monday, you know how it is. Some people are (understandably) concerned that if they leak what is supposed to be private info and it's traced back to them, they could get into a bit of trouble.

Anyway, I notice that one poster on IORR (CocaineEyes) did mention that Ronnie has supposedly been blabbing again and that at a recent art exhibition he was telling people that a) the Stones would play small shows in November-December in London (which would tie in with Mick's quote from last month) and b) that they would then tour in 2013.  Whilst we know Ronnie's track record of 'wishful thinking' we're talking about something thats 3 months away and you'd like to think by THIS stage he'd know what he was going to be doing between now and Christmas. What intrigues me further is that another poster - TeddyB - who I'd consider a really good source of info - has suggested that he'd heard much the same thing.

So, this might have some validity. Guess we'll know soon enough.

Probably not, but as he's there for something work-related and she's his personal manager, it's pretty relevant.  They're easy targets for fans' derision I suppose, but you could argue that certain megastars need some kind of 'human buffer zone' between themselves and the media and fans so that they can get some work done and get on with some kind of semblance of a 'normal' life.

Keith in Paris can be an odd arrangement especially considering the fact that over four decades since he first moved there, he's never really bothered to learn the language or integrate too much. Plus, he's not exactly normal. This is a man, after all, who once flew from New York to Paris, got someone to leave him from the airport to his home  - and who then couldnt remember the address of his apartment and had to phone the Stones office in New York to ask a secretary to tell him where he lived.  :forfucksake

Cant be arsed doing any more work today as I'm going to the pub in half an hour so I took a little peek at the events lined up for various major theatres in London from mid-November until Christmas.

Obviously as its only August, there are still quite a few shows that'll be added between now and then but I thought I'd narrow the search down to the more likely theatres that tend to host concerts and which the Stones might potentially choose for a run of small shows. HMV Forum, Indigo2, the Roundhouse and Brixton are maybe a bit out of the city centre (the Roundhouse in Camden would be the most central - they could even pop into Amy Winehouse's local pub down the street) but are all possible.  The Stones have of course played the last two before. Keith has played the Forum in 1992.

A wild card could be the Ambassador Theatre where Ronnie has played a few times recently and where the Boogie 4 Stu gig took place. However, its VERY small - maybe only a few hundred people, so I'd say its highly unlikely.


Its obviously all speculative, but if I'd to absolute stick my neck out and pick which of those places would be the most likely for a run of Stones gigs I'd go for the Roundhouse or the Indigo2.

The Dylan one was actually recorded at Manchester's Free Trade Hall (17th May '66)...the two RAH shows which ended the tour took place on 26th and 27th. For several years the bootleg was believed to be from the RAH, but it wasn't. The RAH shows are available as boots in great quality though.

Ok,thanks Edith. Obviously I've heard of the Royal Albert Hall...........The Annual dust up at the Royal Albert Hall as Clapton called it on 24 nights. But didn't know the Stones history with the place. Not that the site is all that important. Wherever they play instantly becomes historic.

They should come to Melbourne and take up residency at The Palais. Lots of Stones history there. And i can easily pop in to see them. Works for everyone!

Meggy and I were having a lunchtime 'aperitif' in the Hawley Arms just down the street (Amy's local, which I mentioned earlier) when we got your text that you'd arrived in London to join us for the final Bigger Bang show.

Brixton Academy and Hammersmith Apollo are much the same size as the RAH, though.

We should all maybe take this with a pinch of salt, though, as it may be a load of bollocks. Imagining it is fun, though. The Roundhouse has become a pretty popular venue again since it reopened - I'm surprised its free for so many weeks later in the year.

The Indigo2 is a terrific venue. Thats where we saw Prince, and the bar service is very fast!

I personally think that if the Stones tour next year it wont be a long one, and so it'd generally be stadiums. Cant imagine them passing up the opportunity of playing the new Wembley Stadium, although strangely enough the new Olympic Stadium has become just as iconic as a building in it's own right in a short space of time.

I like how they tried super hard to keep things hush, I expect a few surpises... We will see a compilation... the real question is, do they want to make another studio album, which, at this point, I have no problem saying, may be their last. I'm sure they realize this fact as well... there will always be compilations, archive live stuff and studio gems that have been unreleased... but one more full length, is kind of important, IMO!!!

If it does (and thats a pretty big 'if'), it wont be the only shows anyway. The rumour does suggest that its basically a prelude to a tour in 2013.

The former is far less likely to take place than the latter.

After months of speculation whether the Rolling Stones would record this year to mark their 50th anniversary, the band spent time in a Paris recording studio last week. The band was photographed exiting an unnamed studio on August 21st. Two days, later, Jagger tweeted a photo of himself in a studio surrounded by some very Stonesy items: cases of Fender amps, Telecasters, Stratocasters and several harmonicas. "Had fun in the Paris studio this week!" he wrote.

Last week, the Stones also posted a cryptic image of animal eyes on their Facebook page, instructing fans to download the free "uView" app and point their phones at the screen. The eyes came to life and an animal growled while "Start Me Up" played.

It's at least the third time the band has gathered in recent months; they rehearsed in the New York area in late April. "We played everything, really," Keith Richards told Rolling Stone then. "We're just getting our chops together. It was like playing in the garage, a maintenance check, you know?"

The last day of the rehearsals was filmed by director Brett Morgen for a documentary chronicling the band's history to appear on HBO this fall. "Someone would mention a song, and within the second run they had nailed it," Morgen says. "Having screened through 50 years of material over the last six months, I would rank it up there with anything I've ever heard from them. They were extremely tight."

The band also gathered in London in July to celebrate their 50th anniversary with a photo exhibit. Before that meeting, Keith Richards told Rolling Stone the band would also use the time to discuss recording. "I'd love to get some tracks down and see what songs we've got. And that goes along with part of getting the band back together and getting things moving. So I'd love to cut some tracks, yeah." Asked if he saw himself writing one-on-one with Jagger again, Richards replied, "I have no doubt."

If the band is recording new material, it would be their first new songs since 2005's A Bigger Bang. (They've since brushed up a few old songs for 2010's Exile on Main Street and 2011's Some Girls reissue compilations).

Shows are on the horizon too. In July, Jagger surprised fans by mentioning in an interview with the London Evening Standard that the band would be playing live "in the autumn . . . You will definitely be seeing us all together soon. It's been great fun being back together and there are a lot of memories in here. I can't believe it's been 50 years. We've been hanging out together, seeing quite a bit of each other and we want to do some gigs

The Rolling Stones are recording in France, according to a tweet by Mick Jagger.

"Had fun in the Paris studio this week!" Jagger wrote on Thursday. The accompanying photograph shows the singer holding a guitar in a studio crowded with instruments.

Last week, the Stones were photographed leaving a French studio. An enterprising fan identified the location as Studio Guillaume Tell in Paris.

According to Stones expert and archivist Nico Zentgraf, the session was produced with long-time collaborator Don Was, with Chuck Leavell on keyboards and Darryl Jones on bass.

The relatively short studio time suggests the band are not recording an album – it is more likely they have laid down new songs for inclusion on a greatest hits set due this autumn.

Although the group spent time together earlier this summer, they were reportedly practising old material, not recording new songs.

"It was like playing in the garage, a maintenance check," Keith Richards explained to Rolling Stone.

Besides a special logo and the announcement of a new documentary, the Rolling Stones have yet to unveil plans for their 50th anniversary.

"Exciting news [is] coming soon," they wrote in a Facebook post this month. In July, Jagger told the Evening Standard that the Stones had plans to perform live "in the autumn".

On Monday, the band revealed that the aforementioned documentary, Charlie is My Darling – Ireland 1965, will premiere at the New York film festival on 29 September. It incorporates footage from their first professionally shot live performance.

At this point I'll settle for 2-3 new tunes.....but they need to be upscale from the likes of Under The Radar etc.....If greed hadnt prompted the 40 Licks maybe "The Golden 50" might have sold a few copies if well thought out and produced......maybe include some initial track versions ala Reggae SMU to make the package tastier.

Totally underwhelmed if it a greatest hits with a few new crappy songs.

Well other than the excitement at the idea of getting a new album I don't think we're missing much based on their output since 1983, none of their albums has had any lasting power, except B2B possibly, so if they can come up with a couple of memorable tunes (unlike for 40 licks) then it's probably just as well. I for one am not interested in another ABB with crap like She Saw me Coming, Driving too Fast, Look what the Cat, etc...

IMO B@B is great... and ABB has about 6 songs I still like alot. I also thought Don't Stop was/is a great tune... staying power by b and with this logevity isn't going to happen with new songs... the old fans won't be happy, and very few new fans will get into it... for me, I'm just listening to a song, not thinknig how it comapres to honky tonk woman, b/c that would be stupid for me to do... it is what it is, and i'm letting it happen organically... mick can still about relationships, sex and that is the heart of rock n roll... so fuck all else! and that my two copper looking circles with abe on it...

I have the feeling the big news coming has nothing to do with a tour or newly recorded new material. What if this iPhone viewing thing is for a back catalog release or a new archival release? That week spent in a Paris studio could have been to approve the mixes and packaging for a box set and add any final flurishes to the recordings.

I cant imagine they'd make this fuss over another archival release and their back catalogue has already been remastered and reissued just a couple of years ago.

That's all well and good, but I want more than a best of with 4 or 5 new songs. 40 Licks had terrible editing on some songs, but the new material I really enjoyed. This 50th is a huge milestone. Celebrate with a new album, not an updated 40 Licks. I'm sure whatever they give us I'll love, but I am hungry to devour an entire album of new material. I want that excitement of running to the store and getting the album, running home, and dancing and singing the night away with it. There will be time enough for compilations years down the road.

Once they realised how much of a killing could be made on nostalgia when they toured behind a greatest hits album in 2002, that became the template for the future. High financial gain for minimal creative effort. So much for Mick always insisting they'd never end up as a nostalgia act like the Beach Boys (who, ironically, are now touring again having released their first album of new material in about 25 years!)

They dont owe UMG any new material. However, they are a few years into a 5-year deal with them that's primarily focused on their back catalogue, so as has always been the case with any label they've had distributing their material since they left ABKCO, a compilation is inevitable at some point.

The Rolling Stones‘ Mick Jagger hinted earlier this year that “autumn” would be the next time he thought we’d see the band onstage. It now looks as though that prediction is pretty spot on, as Billboard reports that the band are in the process of lining up four performances later this year.

A source tells the magazine that Sir Richard Branson and Australian promoter Paul Dainty are backing the four shows, which will take place this November. Two of the shows will take place at London’s O2 Arena, while the other two are heading across the pond to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Though the band are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, the talk about a tour has been a touchy one with each of the members at time chiming in with differing stories. Earlier this year the group stated that they wouldn’t go on tour, but then they started having a few rehearsals in the studio. By July, Keith Richards hinted that there might be some live shows coming. He explained, “We’ve got together and it feels so good. There’s things in the works. I think it’s definitely happening. But when? I can’t say yet.”

Michael Cohl, who produced the band’s tours from 1989 through the present, told Billboard back in late June that he hadn’t received any info on the band’s upcoming tour plans.

My interpretation of their week in the studio was that they recorded a brand new, double-album (if there is such a thing in 2012).  Bill was there, Mick Taylor, and Brian showed up for a few tracks.

Clearly not.

Theyve toured twice. Once behind a greatest hits release. Once behind an album that they soon lost interest in promoting in concert. The next tour will not be behind a new album.

But hey, cling to the misconception that theyre a living, breathing, creative band if thats what floats your boat. The next tour will effectively be Licks Part III.

Going by previous mentioned rules Barclays Center looks a little difficult to fit more than 2 shows in a run, whereas O2 has a good clear run (16 - 25). FWIW

Seems easy enough to add a few more dates at the same place if they're all set up. Besides with $25m (and I doubt they'd bother for less) and 80000 seats that's a net of $312.5 per seat so that can't be right.

Assuming Mick still cant sing two nights in a row, they'll probably need three free nights to play two shows (they could still do it by dismantling the stage and allowing the venue to be used for something else on the off night but thats probably too much bother).

In which case, unless they play early in the month, the NYC dates would be (IMO) more likely to be November 23rd and 25th. Its a Friday and a Sunday which helps. Its also around the time the greatest hits package comes out, so it would be a good promotional tie in with that release. There's no other combination available in the second half of November.

Just guesswork, I hasten to add.  Quite a roster for this venue that month. Dylan/Knopfler, The Who, Neil Young and now the Stones. And the shows dont have to be two days apart. They could play 22nd and 25th for example.

And thats quite a few nights free at the 02 in London just prior to that. $25 million for 4 indoor shows in front of 80,000 people seems a serious wedge, even by Stones standards (last tour their average gross was $4 million per show - and most of those were stadiums). Unless their prices are through the roof (in which case they can stuff it), there would have to be some kind of TV rights or options on extra shows for any promoter to come up with that kind of dough.

Good point. Big risk reputation-wise after five years of inactivity to not only play a big show (with high ticket prices) but to broadcast it 'live'.

However, all-seated capacity for these venues would be a bit less as Stones shows will probably have that kind of arrangement. The capacity for the 2007 shows there was around 14-15,000 by the time they put in the b-stage as well.

The Rolling Stones‘ Mick Jagger hinted earlier this year that “autumn” would be the next time he thought we’d see the band onstage. It now looks as though that prediction is pretty spot on, as Billboard reports that the band are in the process of lining up four performances later this year.

A source tells the magazine that Sir Richard Branson and Australian promoter Paul Dainty are backing the four shows, which will take place this November. Two of the shows will take place at London’s O2 Arena, while the other two are heading across the pond to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Though the band are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, the talk about a tour has been a touchy one with each of the members at time chiming in with differing stories. Earlier this year the group stated that they wouldn’t go on tour, but then they started having a few rehearsals in the studio. By July, Keith Richards hinted that there might be some live shows coming. He explained, “We’ve got together and it feels so good. There’s things in the works. I think it’s definitely happening. But when? I can’t say yet.”

Michael Cohl, who produced the band’s tours from 1989 through the present, told Billboard back in late June that he hadn’t received any info on the band’s upcoming tour plans.

Gazza, these dates seemed "available" according to the Barclays Center website. But it didn't list the dates for the Brooklyn Nets' home games, which were listed on the team's website. The actually available dates are only November 2, 6, 7, 8, 22 and 26.

Yeah that's going to be expensive...on the other hand it's an arena, a reasonable place to see a concert, I'd be more inclined to splurge some cash on that rather than on a concert ticket in a stadium. There will be a tour in 2013. This is just a taster.

There's no way they're going to rehearse for weeks just for four or five concerts.

The shows later this year will not be the last Rolling Stones concerts.

I know many of us are a bit wary of potentially sky high prices but I do think someone will be underwriting a large amount of the money to put them together. I dont think its a coincidence that theyre playing a new Barclays-owned concert venue for the New York shows instead of Madison Square Garden.

I'm also more confident in Richard Branson - who has a very good track record as a philanthropist - being more fan friendly as a promoter than Michael Cohl. The Aussies on here could maybe give us more of an insight into Paul Dainty.


You will see the Stones in 2013. As will that rat bastid friend of ours from Joisey.

Rollingstone.com have certainly got it right when they said this story really was hush-hush.

It's shaping up to be a major fall for the Rolling Stones. In addition to recording new music in Paris last week, the band will play its first shows since 2007 later this year to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Rolling Stone has learned the band is planning two shows at Brooklyn's Barclays Center to happen before the end of the year. "This was accomplished in a Navy SEAL-like operation," a source familiar with the deal tells Rolling Stone. "No one I knew whispered a word of this before yesterday."

Billboard reported yesterday about the Brooklyn shows and added the band will also play two shows at London's O2 Arena in November with Virgin founder Richard Branson and Australian promoter Paul Dainty promoting the gigs. A spokesperson for the Stones declined to say the London and New York shows were confirmed.

The band gathered to record two new songs for an upcoming box set last week at Guillaume Tell Studios near Paris, where they also recorded new tracks for 2002's 40 Licks set a decade ago. "Had fun in the Paris studio this week!" Mick Jagger tweeted with a photo surrounded by Telecasters, Stratocasters and harmonicas. "I'd love to get some tracks down and see what songs we've got," Keith Richards told Rolling Stone before the recording sessions. "And that goes along with part of getting the band back together and getting things moving. So I'd love to cut some tracks, yeah." Asked if he saw himself writing one-on-one with Jagger again, Richards said, "I have no doubt."

The Stones also rehearsed songs from their entire catalog in the New York area in April. "That was a great time," Richards said. "I thought I'd be quite rusty, after all we hadn't done it for a while, in five years or something. And amazing to hear it sounded as fresh as you could hope for. It was a great week."

The final day of those rehearsals were filmed for Crossfire Hurricane, a film spanning the band's entire career to premiere November 15th, directed by Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays in the Picture). "Nobody has put the story together as a narrative," Morgen told Rolling Stone earlier this year. "We've been looking under every rock going through their archives. It will be music never heard before, and I've conducted 50-plus hours of interviews so far. By the time we're done, they will be the most extensive group interviews they've ever done." At the time, Richards told Rolling Stone, "He told me 80 percent of the footage has never been seen before, which amazes me. I didn't know there was that much around."

By the way, our friend carlostones10 who has good contacts with Universal in Brazil states that the band will have a press conference in mid September to announce these shows.

In which case, next week's 'Ruby Tuesday' announcement might have more to do with the Universal release for late November.

We'll see.

Footage unseen to most of the public might be a different thing to 'footage not in circulation', I guess, but yes, its quite conceivable that theres a lot of material in their vaults which we've never seen.

At a JFK ( maybe Newark) Hanger in front of a VS 747-400...calling it now!!

I know I sound like a grumpy old man, but I get a 'meh' feeling about yet another documentary. A good unauthorized one could be interesting, but then again...same with the new stuff: if it is 50 licks with 45 rehashed classics and 5 new takes, why not go for an EP?

Anything other than a new record (a good one this time, please) and a tour that reaches further than 4 dates probably won't get me jumping. Then there's the Stones Inc. attitude that's popping up again: if the price of the Brussels vinyl edition is an omen of what is to come, this band is so far out of reach with their fan base it's funny.

Dont think there was any formal 'big' announcement for tours prior to 1981, apart from '75

In 1981, Mick did a press conference at JFK Stadium. For the '82 and '90 Euro tours he did press conferences in London at La Beat Route (1982) and at The Tabernacle Club (1990). The latter one was broadcast on MTV Europe and he almost broke his neck when he tripped over a wire as he came onstage after being introduced!

The 1995 European tour was announced via a press conference in Palm Beach, Florida in November 1994, just a couple of days after the Stones had played the Miami PPV show. I only recall the 1998 tour being done via a press release around November - I remember phoning the Stones publicists, telling them I was a journalist (I didnt even have the internet at the time) and getting them to fax me the tour dates at work. The 2003 Euro tour was done much the same way as I recall. For the 2006 tour, they did something similar to what they did for 1995 - the band were playing in Dallas in late November and did a press conference and interviews there. For the second ABB European tour in 2007, Mick took part in a webcast in March of that year.  Keith was also meant to show up for it, but mysteriously failed to do so!


For the 1999 No Security tour, I think (from memory) they just did a press release again but I seem to recall some kind of VH-1 announcement. The European dates that year had already been confirmed in June 1998 after the UK dates had been postponed for 12 months. They just gradually added a few more dates with minimal fanfare.

For the European 2006 tour we got this hilarious webcast with questions from journalists from each country where they all looked embarrassed by Keith's "randomness" (he was drinking some red stuff) and Mick was trying to keep things moving. Your comment "...there's other people, and they are using them" is ringing very true. The Stones are a corporation (in a sense...sadly, sort of...) and they may take the very safest route to the big cash.. even if there's a tad more in other avenues that pose risk. However, don't count Cohl out. The Stones "are" risk takers in some situations and if Cohl can wave a bigger pay-check in front of their noses for next year they just may chance it. It wouldn't be the first time they had risked and won out. There is no smarter act in the history of music when it comes to touring as The Stones. I'm sure they will make the right choice.

Still... you know Cohl is "concerned" as all get-out right now. It's like seeing a chic you thought you had forever in the bag finally out with another bloke...and having a great time... Will she indeed comeback this time... or is it over? To say Cohl is not mulling this concept over right now is unrealistic. Is Cohl used up by The Stones as so many have been in the past? I can't say Cohls out for a major ticket next year... then again ... guess what...

as you noted... The Stones are proving Cohl is not the only promoter that has the potential to make them record numbers. I openly admit ...a few months ago I just couldn't see this happening with that kind of loot coming from most likely Cohl or at the least Live Nation. I even had argued against the fact that anyone could prove to be that profitable as either those two entities. I am still not saying Cohls out, still it's now it's not so "far fetched" at all in assuming he just may be on the outs. Hmmmm?... we shall see.

I only mentioned it to highlight the fact that the comment Cohl did make was back in June. Before these shows were seriously considered. Some fans even seriously argued that the Stones COULDNT tour until the Cohl/Live Nation lawsuit was resolved ffs! (aside from the fact that the band actually issued a statement about two years ago stating that he was no longer employed as their promoter)

I dont recall Branson having any history as a music promoter though. Which makes the reasoning behind using him a bit more intriguing than it normally would be.

Chris Epting (hbwriter on IORR) who some of you may know is a music journalist stated that he'd been told that there may be a lottery-type ticketless system for these shows to make availability fairer and to cut down on scalping as they know the demand will be massive.  Something similar to what was used when Led Zeppelin did their reunion gig at the 02 five years ago.

If true, this might explain why Richard Branson - who has no track record in concert promotion to speak of but is big on philanthopical and charitable endeavours - is involved in this venture with an established concert promoter in Paul Dainty.

Hospital theme in connection with the "Rescue" concept, love that look on Keith's face during the interview, looks he's just been woken up from hibernation! This makes me want to listen to ER like...NOW!

A Stones Sideman Steps Out By JOHN JURGENSEN


The email from Mick Jagger came in on July 24. He was putting Chuck Leavell on active duty with the Rolling Stones, as he has many times since the journeyman keyboard player first toured with the band in 1982. From his home near Macon, Ga., Mr. Leavell flew to Paris for a weeklong recording session that ended last Thursday, and contributed piano and organ parts for two new songs intended for a Stones 50th-anniversary release expected later this year.


Mr. Leavell's calendar reflects his career as a musical wingman to the likes of the Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton and George Harrison. Before parachuting into Paris, he recorded in Nashville with blues harmonica heavy James Cotton. He then spent two weeks at John Mayer's house on the Yellowstone River in Montana, where the chart-topping singer and guitarist was breaking in a studio and recording new material while recovering from throat surgery. The Stones finished just in time for Mr. Leavell to make a concert—with his own band—in Chattanooga, Tenn.

In addition to impeccable chops, musicians hired for long-haul sessions and tours must provide good company. During an interview in New York this summer, Mr. Leavell chuckled over road memories, like winging it on an out-of-tune piano in Italy during his freshman tour with the Stones; or when a stage tech attached two hair dryers to a plastic tube to warm the pianist's fingers during a frigid mid-'70s Allman Brothers show.

Seated at a Steinway in Electric Lady Studios, where he played on Mr. Mayer's last album, "Born and Raised," Mr. Leavell improvised some boogie-woogie, stride and barrelhouse riffs. He explored these styles on his recent album "Back to the Woods," a homage to Otis Spann, Leroy Carr and other piano pioneers. He says, "When you say 'blues,' everybody thinks 'guitars.' "

Mr. Leavell last joined the Stones for a rehearsal in New York in April, the first time the band had assembled in five years. He describes the songs they recorded in Paris as "up-tempo" Jagger/Richards rockers, including one on which Ronnie Wood played slide guitar. "Great hooks. Great energy. Bare bones," he says. With co-producer Don Was present, they dashed off the songs with just a few takes each. Mr. Leavell wouldn't confirm a recent report that the band will play concerts in London and Brooklyn in November.

There are risks to playing sideman to the stars. When Mr. Mayer canceled a tour because of his throat problem, Mr. Leavell lost a job that would have lasted at least six months. It was also too late to book many of his own solo gigs for the summer. In part to buffer himself, he has built side careers, including a founding stake in a conservationist website, the Mother Nature Network, and a 2,500-acre tree farm he runs with his wife. When gigs fall through, he says, "I don't mind spending time on that tractor."

 They couldn't, circa 2007 (remember the stewards on the stairwells with fistfull's of free upgrades??)
The ballot system would be a cannny way of generating positive p.r & a guaranteed 'sell out'

All true, although the significant difference this time is that in 2007 theyd played London just 12 months earlier, and more importantly these will be the only shows in Europe this year.

I am so shocked Dainty is involved. He tours them here with great success, but i still think its an unusual choice. Of course, the real benefit could they WILL tour Oz next year!

I am speculating that hbwriter isn't aware that paperless tickets are illegal in New York.

Exclusive: Rolling Stones Dates In New York and London

The Rolling Stones have picked their dates for four 50th anniversary shows this fall: November 26 and 27 in London at the O2 Arena and December 6 and 7 in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center. Tickets will be roughly $500 apiece to offset the $25 million the group is being paid by Sir Richard Branson.

The shows follows an HBO documentary (which this column announced some months ago) plus a huge 50th anniversary photo book that collects all the best pictures of the group going back to 1962.

The Stones are not alone celebrating their 50th anniversary this fall. Barbra Streisand will precede them into the Barclays Center in October.

The Stones shows may be the beginning of a big worldwide farewell 50th anniversary tour. There may be an album of new material too.

Branson, I am told, was convinced by Mick Jagger to get into the live promotion business with Australian Paul Dainty. Jagger rejected offers from Live Nation, AEGLive and Michael Cohl, the producer who just settled his “Spider Man” lawsuits on Broadway with Julie Tamor.

Worth repeating Erikjjf's detective work from the other day which indicated that the 02 is available November 16-25,27 & 29 and that the only three nights available at the Barclays Center in early December are 6,8 and 13th, so these dates may be wrong. Hopefully the ticket prices speculation is as well.....however this journo apparently broke the SuperHeavy story - so he has a bit of a track record for news stories that would freak Stones fans out!

The Brooklyn Nets have a home game at the Barclays Center on December 7th.

Combinations of November 25/27 for London and December 6/8 for New York WOULD work, though.

You know, I never even noticed that.

So, he's wrong on those concert dates.

He's also wrong on the new album.

I'd guess he's probably wrong about a 'big' tour.

$500 isnt unbelievable for shows in New York considering their top price was $450 six years ago, but the top price for UK tickets in 2007 was £150 which was considered really excessive for here and way above what anyone else was charging. This, if true, would mean the prices this time would be more than DOUBLE that.

They'd deserve to be sent to the Tower of London if they charged that for a show in the UK.
