Who will light the Olympic cauldron? Odds favor Queen Elizabeth or Roger Bannister

The biggest mystery of the Olympics will be revealed just before midnight Friday when the Olympic cauldron will be lit in London. Speculation on the identity of the final torchbearer began almost immediately after the IOC announced the Games would return to London. In the final hours before the Olympics get underway, odds have dramatically shifted. Who will light carry the final Olympic flame? Fourth-Place Medal investigates. (Odds from Sky Bet.)

Queen Elizabeth II: 5/1

The odds on the Queen have increased sharply in the hours before the Opening Ceremony. The 86-year-old monarch, in the midst of celebrating her diamond jubilee, dropped from 25/1 to 5/1 overnight.

Roger Bannister: 1/1

A prominent British bookmaker suspended torchbearer betting on Thursday after a surge in wagers on Bannister, the man who broke the four-minute mile barrier in 1954. Over 98 percent of the bets that came into William Hill were for the 83-year-old living legend. That helped drop the odds on Bannister to even. He had been 33/1 in June. Not that anyone will be getting rich off these wagers: When inside information can shift a market like this, bookmakers tend to limit the amount that an individual can bet.

Steve Redgrave: 3/2

Redgrave won five consecutive Olympic golds in rowing and is considered one of the biggest sporting stars in Great Britain. He’s been the odds-on favorite since it was first announced that London would host the Olympics and has remained near the top of many lists ever since. That air of inevitability could hurt Redgrave. Danny Boyle likes to be unconventional and the most conventional choice may have a disadvantage. Then again, a Redgrave lighting doesn’t have to be predictable. With Boyle at the helm, a simple torch lighting (think Muhammad Ali) may be off the table. Thinking along those lines, can’t you just picture Redgrave rowing down the Thames and lighting the flame from his boat?

David Beckham: 7/1

You’d be better off betting on Henry VIII to light the cauldron. Beckham isn’t lighting it. There are no certainties in life, but this is pretty close.

Children or normal citizens: Off

The oddsmakers we looked at didn’t have odds on a regular person being the final torchbearer. We think it’s a possibility, however slim. Early word says Boyle’s Ceremony will be an egalitarian tribute to England. There are nods to the industrial revolution and nurses and war efforts. What better way to cap it all off than by having children or citizens of varying backgrounds light the cauldron together?

Hey Brits, despite what the Son of Moroni draft-dodging clown visiting over there says -- and please keep in mind his cult prevents him from even stepping foot in a god-glorious London pub -- there is no concern that wasn't planned for and addressed years ago.  This is going to be one successful event.

And Usain Bolt is literally going to blow doors.

Well done Great Britain. Opening ceremony was very moving and Her Majesty stole the show.

Missed the parade of athletes (fell asleep), saw the torch lighting and turned it off before "Angela Lansbury's" performance of Hey Jude. Blech.

It was such a unique opening...very personal and heartfelt. :) I must admit, I was being lulled into a sense of calm and peace and good old Brit decorum, when.......the London Philharmonic got up to pay tribute to "Chariots of Fire".......and.......we saw one finger hitting one note of a piano.....and.......I thought we were going to hear/see a calm, rather staid version of the song {which does nothing for me, really}, then...............the camera panned up.........and..............................it was MR. BEAN! ;D Just brilliant! I laughted and laughted....

:loloncemore :loloncemore

Loved the decade by decade musical tribute. And Sir Paul....well, he was a bit choked up at the beginning. Quite an historic moment, and very moving. :)

Well done, indeed! 8-)

To be honest, I was kind of let down. I expected much more from the UK and Danny Boyle. It definitely had its great moments and it was obvious that a lot of work and thought was put into it, but I felt it lacked coherence and was kind of slow at points.

It didn't help that stupid Greek television announced in the news one hour before the ceremony, that the Stones were actually gonna play :stinkypost
I should have known it wasn't possible for only Greek networks to be aware of this, but I thought it was a last-minute announcement and was too excited to go online and double check. So I anxiously waited for all the 3 hours only to find Macca playing Hey Jude in the end  :Youmakeagrownmancrylikejoey
Sky high levels of disappointment.

It was the music played in the stadium during the Opening Ceremony (great bit of inventiveness and direction by Danny Boyle).  Some of it performed live, some of it a mish-mash of British music down the years to accompany various choreographed routines which included nods to the Industrial Revolution, The NHS, the Suffragette movement, tributes to the British Film Industry etc - and then finally a musical soundtrack to the Parade of Nations as the teams entered the stadium.

Loved the use of David Bowie's "Heroes" when the GB team came in at the end. A genuinely spine-tingling moment.

The gymnastics scoring to qualify for the individual all around are ridiculous!  The top 24 atheletes are supposed to go on, but only two are allowed from each county.  So if a gymnast scores third in the overall competitioin  but is also third on their team they can not go on to the individual round.  That is just stupid.  No other sports at the Olympics have a stupid rule.  Can you imagine the uproar if a swimmer had the third fastest time but was also third on their team and couldn't swim in the finals?

And yes, the the real football is great!  Enjoying that and the swimming very much so far.

Some background here to the exclusion of baseball and softball

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseball_at_the_Olympics

There are also other major sports which arent in it - golf (included from 2016), cricket (despite being maybe second only to football as the world's most watched sport - it's easily the biggest sport on the Indian subcontinent) and rugby (hasnt been in the Olympics since 1924 - the USA are reigning champions! Rugby sevens will be included in 2016, though). Tennis only came back to the Olympics in 1988, I think.

Talk about an uninvited guest at the Olympics.

Friday night's spectacular pyrotechnics display of the most watched opening ceremony in summer Olympics history attracted more than the eyes of over 40 million people. A clearly seen unidentified flying object was videotaped making its way over London's Olympic stadium, reports Examiner.com.
The disc-shaped object is first seen entering the upper left portion of the video as the fireworks erupt over the stadium. The UFO -- which appears to have a dome or bulge rising from its center -- moves slowly across the sky as if deliberately observing the light-show spectacle below it.

While NBC Olympics -- a division of NBC Sports -- has chosen Goodyear blimps for all of its 2012 Olympics aerial coverage, the strange-looking object that appeared over the opening ceremonies doesn't appear to be a blimp.
On an evening that included an apparent Queen Elizabeth and 007 agent James Bond parachuting out of a helicopter into the Olympics stadium, most people probably wouldn't have been surprised if a staged UFO was also on the entertainment menu, just two weeks after the U.K. released its most recent batch of UFO documents.

Last month, former Ministry of Defense UFO desk officer Nick Pope suggested that a huge event like the London Olympic Games, could present itself as a prime target for otherworldly craft to show themselves to a gigantic viewing audience.

"With the summer of mass events, we are all on high alert for terrorism. But we must also cast our eyes further afield and be prepared for even the most seemingly unfathomable," Pope said, according to PressTV.
Pope wrote earlier this year of a conspiracy theory rumor that suggested a fake alien attack would be staged at the London Olympics.

"A combination of special effects and holographic technology will be used to create the illusion of an alien invasion, the rumor claims," Pope wrote on TruTV.com.

"If aliens have studied our psychology, they may choose to appear in our skies on a significant date -- the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games is one date being widely circulated by conspiracy groups," PressTV quoted Pope.

Maybe Friday night's UFO appearance was a dress rehearsal.

Might be the same UFO seen in the French Quarter:

Aliens must be checking out tourist destinations.

And yes, the the real football is great!  Enjoying that and the swimming very much so far.

Yes, the scoring in gymnastics is kind of ridiculous.
The opening ceremony was great and the games have been a joy to watch.

During the women's match between Spain and the United States, one player ended up pulling down another's swimsuit on live television. The "wardrobe malfunction" resulted in NBC airing bare breasts and nipple live on television. The momentary boobage caused an uproar on Twitter, with many going online to seek confirmation that they did, indeed, lay eyes on a bare breast during NBC's live coverage of the event

Why would anyone that has the internet bother looking for that?

Cant they just look at hardcore porn sites like normal people do?

I've seen a bit of just about everything, I think.  :)

I still think it's strange that beach volleyball, water polo, badminton, etc. are Olympic sports......and baseball and softball no longer fit that bill... :-/ I wonder who determines what sport qualifies? And which sports are added or dumped?? The Olympic Committee? I should know the answer to this.... :-[/quote]
Yeah Sioux. There is a whole criteria of things that a sports organizing body has to present to the Olympic Committiee to get them to consider a sport for inclusion. It usually comes down to politics like most everything else. But I'm with you. I'm trying to watch a little of everything. Never watched so much Team Handball in my life. :wtf1

Thanks for the info, Gazza...:) Yes, tennis came back in '88, one of my fave tennis years, as my girl, Steffi Graf, won the "Golden Slam" that year! All four major tournaments, plus the Olympic gold.  ;D 8-)

Really?  My arcane references don't go for loss.  The Shifter - he was amazing (when he remembered where to show up), like 5 foot nothing, and just blazing last lap speed.  Once ran a 27:30 with a 49 second last 400.  Who the hell runs that fast even today?

Once again MICK shows his parenting expertise! Not every little boy gets to attend the Olympics with his VIP dad & (almost) step-mom. What a great time for them!  I'm sure little Lucas is athleticly inclined, in fact I bet MICK insists on it! MICK's dad was a gym teacher so the apple does not fall far from the tree. With so many sports at the olympics it really opens up possibilities in young minds, and the attitude that if you work hard at something, there is much that can be achieved. Thats why I love watching the Olympics, its inspiring! And I never saw so many people in such excellent physical condition! How about that double amputee Oscar Pistorius from S. Africa? That was incredably amazing!

bad calls, yes.... I have been rooting for teams on the other side of those. Canada blew a lot of scoring chances, and USA had a lot of chances that were just like the game winner... in the end, i wouldn't say ref decided the game. If you watch the game, early on, Canada missed a PK. didn't even hit the goal, completely missed... that would've been there game winner!!!!

By Associated Press, Tuesday, August 7, 6:44 AMAP

LONDON — Now that’s more like it.

Mick Jagger has dropped by Olympic Stadium to watch some track and field. It didn’t help Britain’s medal count, but it reassured celebrity-watchers worried that the world’s biggest sporting event might be lacking in star power.

Jagger was photographed chatting with London games chief Sebastian Coe at the stadium on Monday evening.

He’s not the only A-lister to attend the games, but most are keeping a low profile.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was spotted at the Olympic Stadium Tuesday. Billionaire Bill Gates has attended events including table tennis and beach volleyball.

The London games have also drawn a healthy sprinkling of royalty, with Prince William, his wife Kate and brother Prince Harry popping up at everything from equestrian to swimming to gymnastics.

London Olympics Closing Ceremony: Giant ‘After Party’ To Feature 20+ Music Acts

By NANCY TARTAGLIONE, International Editor | Thursday, 9 August 2012 12:34 UK

Some new details have emerged surrounding Sunday’s Olympics Closing Ceremony while speculation as to the content continues to swirl. Following Danny Boyle’s corker of an opener that scored ratings highs in the US and UK, music director David Arnold told The Telegraph, “To me this should be the greatest after party in the world.” A tribute to British design, fashion, fine art, poetry, playwriting and pop music, the show is titled A Symphony Of British Music. Over 4,100 performers will kick off the event at 9pm local time on Sunday. But once again, it looks like folks in the US will have to wait at least 3 hours to catch the festivities as NBC will broadcast the ceremony starting at 7pm local time, according to current schedules. Among the performers tipped are The Who, Paul McCartney, Elton John, the Rolling Stones, George Michael, Paul Weller, the Spice Girls, Adele, Ray Davies, Liam Gallagher, Annie Lennox, Madness, the Pet Shop Boys, Take That, Muse, One Direction and members of Queen. Over 10,000 athletes and flagbearers are expected to march with the men’s marathon medal ceremony a feature. Stephen Daldry is exec producer of the ceremonies. Arnold, the composer who has handled scores for recent Bond films Quantum Of Solace and Casino Royale and TV shows including Sherlock and Little Britain USA, says he’s been working for two years to put together the show and was forced to turn down scoring Skyfall because of his Olympic duties.

Closing ceremony to showcase least pleasant aspects of Britain

07-08-12
IN a bid to ensure international visitors don’t outstay their welcome, the Olympics closing ceremony will feature the fighting and vomiting aspects of the UK.

The epic event will feature a specially-constructed 23-storey Wetherspoons and 10,000 drunkards drumming along to Oops Upside Your Head before the largest synchronised vomit in history.

Volunteers will drink four litres of value-range cola and eat 2lb of asparagus on the day of the ceremony  to ensure all the seats in the stadium are coated in a pungent layer of urine, illustrating the traditional use of the UK’s public places.

All other Olympic volunteers have been instructed to mug the spectators as they leave the stadium, with each mugging having a personally-tailored racial epithet based on the ticket-holder’s booking information.

The climax of the ceremony will be the dousing of the Olympic flame by Wayne Hayes, a taxi driver from Carlisle, who will light his roll-up on the flame, complain about his last gas bill, extinguish it and tell the remainder of the crowd to fuck off home.

There will also be an interactive element to proceedings as ‘townie’ pissheads in shiny short-sleeved shirts blunder through the audience, deliberately bashing into people in the hope of starting a ruckus.

Artistic director Danny Boyle said: “The powers-that-be are concerned that the overall success and good vibes during the games may have given tourists an unrealistically positive impression of the country.

“While I’m intrigued by the creative challenge of a bleak and nihilistic closing event, I baulked at their suggestion of filling the stadium with West Ham fans.

“However they insisted on having One Direction, even though I thought that was too depressing.”

Latest from E! :

How's this for ending the 2012 London Olympic Games with a bang?

The games will come to a rousing finish with performances by One Direction, Spice Girls, (Joey alert:) The Who, George Michael and Take That at this Sunday's highly anticipated closing ceremony, a source confirms exclusively to E! News.

The news caps months of speculation about exactly which top British talents will be gracing the event, whose roster has remained under top-secret lockdown. But that's not all the talent that will be on hand, either.

Queen with Brian May, Jessie J, Madness, Pet Shop Boys and Russell Brand will also be taking part in the extravaganza, according to the source.

Featuring a little something for everyone, the closing event sounds great: One Direction's appearance is impeccably timed to coast on their wild and surging fandom, which has yet to hit its peak while the Spice Girls and Take That, offer a much more nostalgic edge, and will certainly hit some high notes with viewers raring for their '90s heyday.

From the official Who website:

The rumour mill is in full swing. The twitterati are atit.

Who’s playing at the London Olympics closing ceremony on Sunday and who isn’t?

The Who are playing. We all know that. Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey have confirmed that.

But Keith Moon isn’t. Is he?

Joey, is Keith at the Brazen Head tonight?

I'm sorry, but I must admit that I am genuinely surprised.  I was a bit sadden, too.  That image of Marcelo and Neymar sitting on the grass literally crying.  It truly broke my heart.

P.S.  Did you know that Giovanni Dos Santos is half Brazilian?  His mom is Mexican and his dad is Brazilian.  Anyways, he did not get to play in the final game because of an injury.

Days after her facial reaction became a viral favorite, U.S. Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney appears to have fully adopted her own meme.

After settling for a silver medal in last Sunday's women's vault final, Maroney made waves with a pout that captured her second-place disappointment. That prompted the birth of the "McKayla Is Not Impressed" Tumblr, sporting the 16-year-old's signature expression toward situations outside of gymnastics.

On Saturday, Maroney brought the "not impressed" air to her own Instagram account, posting a photo of her disappointment that a pool was closed.

Didnt get to see the closing ceremony tonight as I was at a gig, but have recorded it to watch later. Have to say its been the most enjoyable two weeks of sport I've ever experienced and I'm really kicking myself now that I didnt go to London to see any of it (hindsight is a wonderful thing - but I genuinely did expect a security incident at some stage and the stories about overpriced hotels were offputting). I'm really sorry its all over and its a sobering thought that its probably the last occasion in my lifetime we'll ever stage it.

SO so proud of how London and the UK pulled it off and amazingly delighted and uplifted by the performances of our athletes (and indeed all the athletes regardless of where they came from). The feelgood factor throughout the country in the last two weeks is something you simply can't put a price on. And for a nation that's so easily down on ourselves and where you almost have to feel apologetic for taking some pride in your achievements, that's made such a pleasant change.  Hopefully one legacy will be that we see kids growing up seeing the likes of Ennis, Hoy, Farah, Ainslie, Wiggins etc as people to be admired and emulated instead of vapid airheaded z-list celebrities who have achieved fuck all of note in their shallow and pointless existences.

Interesting bit of Olympic history here:

August 10, 2012 8:25 am
The Olympic Salute We Don’t Use Anymore Because it Looked too Much Like Heiling Hitler

This statue is saluting the Olympics. Image: Arch

If you really loved the Olympics, you would do the official Olympic salute. It goes like this: right arm out slightly and pointed upward, fingers together, palm out. Kind of like you’re raising you’re hand in class. Unfortunately, it also kind of looks like you’re heiling Hitler. Which is why no one uses the official Olympic salute anymore.

At Today I Found Out, they dig up the history, and confusion, caused by the salute. Apparently the Olympic salute came long before Hitler’s gesture, but it caused all sorts of confusion in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Apparently no one could tell which teams were saluting Hitler, and which were saluting the Olympics. The French team, who were trying to salute the Olympics, got a standing ovation from the German crowd who thought they were saluting the Fuhrer.

The origin of the salutes is unclear. Some people think that both the Olympic and the Nazi versions came from an imaginary Roman salute (imaginary because there are no Roman accounts of this salute, but 19th and 20th century artwork all portrayed Romans doing it). It was adopted by the Olympics, and then also by the Italian Fascist Party. From there, the Nazi party swiped the salute to use for their own rituals. Although that’s not how Hitler tells it. Here’s his story, as Today I Found Out quotes from a “Table Talk” from 1942:

I made it the salute of the Party long after the Duce had adopted it. I’d read the description of the sitting of the Diet of Worms, in the course of which Luther was greeted with the German salute. It was to show him that he was not being confronted with arms, but with peaceful intentions. In the days of Frederick the Great, people still saluted with their hats, with pompous gestures. In the Middle Ages, the serfs humbly doffed their bonnets, whilst the noblemen gave the German salute. It was in the Ratskeller at Bremen, about the year 1921, that I first saw this style of salute. It must be regarded as a survival of an ancient custom, which originally signified: “See, I have no weapon in my hand!” I introduced the salute into the Party at our first meeting in Weimar. The SS at once gave it a soldierly style. It’s from that moment that our opponents honored us with the epithet “dogs of Fascists”.

The salute was commonly used in Olympic posters, like this one from the 1924 Paris Olympics:

http://olympic-museum.de/poster/poster1924large.htm

In 1948 the Ottowa Citizen reported that the salute would probably be discontinued after the 1948 games. They write: “The Swiss propose a new salute, consisting of turning the head sharply to the right while keeping the hands to the side.” But it wasn’t really necessary to ban the thing – after 1936 it all but disappeared from use.

That was the Kaiser Chiefs. Pretty sad when neither Gilmour or Waters wanted to be there. No Stones. That's a crime.

London is the best.  I encourage you all to go.  Even a whining political crybaby would enjoy London.  Probably.

Anyway, I called my bar earlier.  Told them not to expect me, and I'd be drinking from home today.

You cant make people play if they don't want to be part of it.

Big fuss over nothing IMO.

The musical universe doesn't revolve around rock bands who appeal to the over 45's and Britain's contribution to the arts and entertainment cultures didn't begin in 1963 and end in the late 70's.

I would daresay that if the Stones had wanted to be part of this, it would have been them and not The Who closing the event.  They chose not to. The main 'blame' for their lack of profile at this event lies with themselves. They had the perfect chance to showcase themselves and instead chose the 'we're not ready' excuse. For fuck sake, even the bloody Spice Girls were able to put a five minute routine together after not having worked together for almost a decade. How difficult would it REALLY have been to play 'Satisfaction'?

I think the guy who put together the musical content had something like 1,000 songs which had to be whittled down to about 30. Hard to effectively showcase every era in history from that. For all we know, the Stones might not have wished their music to be included or maybe asked too much. We simply dont know.

At the end of the day, its not important. The Stones' legacy isn't enhanced or minimised one iota by their inclusion or exclusion from someone's playlist at a sporting event.  Doesnt bother me in the slightest that they werent at the event, but its pointless blaming the show's producers for their absence when they were given the perfect opportunity to present a headlining, show-stealing cameo.

" Closing Ceremony cuts spark outrage  "

" Viewers were left wondering what happened after NBC cut some iconic British performances out of the Olympics Closing Ceremony on Sunday.

Fans looking forward to hearing the Who, Muse, and Ray Davies of the Kinks
instead got a commercial-free airing of the new NBC comedy "Animal Practice. "

The network did air the Who after "Animal Practice" and the local news, around midnight. But that didn't seem to satisfy some fans who couldn't believe the snubbing of Muse, whose contribution was particularly important to the 2012 Summer Olympics.  "

This happened nationwide  ---- totally pissed the entire United States off to no end . There were riots in Phoenix ( well , kinda .................. )

Its not 'wrong', its just personal taste. Its only the closing ceremony of a sporting event, after all. It doesnt matter.

The Who actually being there to perform sort of helped their 'case'.

Bowie isn't really the same era as the Stones.

Likewise with Zeppelin.

The Stones' music was included in the opening ceremony anyway. They were mentioned in a newspaper report a couple of days ago as being featured in a '3 hour musical tribute' - maybe the organisers had to edit it down, who knows, as I dont think the music lasted anywhere near that long.

The same Americans who were happy that Chicago didn't get next games are the ones who predicted London would fail.

I like doing acid, but even more boozing it up.  I don't like injecting drugs.  Cheap fleeting, nowhere licks.  Dont get my creative thoughts flowing, nor my morose ones.

Need to get back to regular business thoughts.  There is NOTHING greater than American business.

Some serious Olympic games!

THE most astounding performance of the games for me.

To destroy a field like that - despite most of them setting their personal or season's best times. Incredible.

and to do it from the front - with no pacemakers, as is normally the case when attempting a world record.

Rolling Stones Refused to Play Olympics Closing Ceremony

Tweet  By Holy Moly, Tue, August 14, 2012

According to a man who writes for The Telegraph, The Rolling Stones never even considered performing at the closing bash, even though they were asked (presumably with the suggestion of Kitty Brucknell as guest vocalist on 19th Nervous Breakdown).

Ronnie Wood told the reporter: "It was never going to happen. Believe me, it was never even on the cards."

The Libertines also turned down the offer (that explains the Kaiser Chiefs then: "Oh just get one of the other bands from the NME to do it. They're all the same..."), with Carl Barat writing on that Twitter: "Libertines got asked, couldn't do it."

Pete would've failed the drug test anyway.

So who else must they have got an out-of-office reply from?

David Bowie apparently said no to singing Heroes, although we hear they drafted in his band to play Fashion for that inexplicable bit where Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell walked about in frocks.

Kate Bush said no, but let them have a new remix instead - which was nice of her. But ffs woman, it's been 33 years since you last toured. Get out of the house for a bit!

And the Sex Pistols stuck two fingers up at the man also responsible for the Concert for Diana atrocity, and told him to bloomin' well sod right off.

But who else said no? And who should they have asked? Maybe everyone who isn't too weird is rubbish. Maybe that was the problem.

We reckon they asked Adele. But a) she never plays big public events because she suffers from stage fright, and b) she has a small child's skull pressing against her cervix.

Robert Plant probably said no, when the rest of Led Zeppelin said yes.

Amy Winehouse stupidly died a year before she could've been the best thing in it.

And Susan Boyle couldn't be trusted not to pull her pants down.

Let's face it, Britain is very good at sport but not actually as good at pop music as we like to think.

Agreed, and great points.  And he did it in the usually tactical and slow Olympics.  On fire from the start.

Coe once ran 1:41.73 out front from the gun, but it was a planned race.  Like you said, Rudisha was facing what turned out to be the toughest 800 field ever.
