I've seen the lyrics printed as:
"It's just that demon life..." and I know he sings that, but doesn't he also sing "evil life"?? Or is it just my poor hearing...

In my head...I always sing it as It's just that evil LIE...
it makes sense to me I guess

Demon life = devil-like lifestyle that will kill you eventually if you dont break out of it's control and free yourself from it's sway = evil ways.

Paint it black, YOU DEVIL! People often think of MICK as a Devil, or Demon.
