Title: Question about Charlie/Don Was interview on XM Post by Mel Belli on May 26th, 2012 at 3:42pm
Was and Charlie were talking about the Exile reissue and Charlie's influences. Charlie specifically mentioned a drummer whose playing he tried to emulate on the alternate version of "Loving Cup" (i.e., the unusually long gaps between beats). Does anyone remember who that drummer was?

The drummers Charlie name-checked on the Watts/Keltner project were Shelby Manne, Art Blakey, Kenny Clarke, Tony Williams, Roy Haynes, Max Roach, Airto, Billy Higgins, and Elvin Jones. I think the last one is perhaps his favorite...but I didn't hear the interview so I don't know. If anyone has a link to it, I'd love to hear it.

Gotta be Elvin............Like I said, Elvin, Humbled me in to rethinking my practice habits and jam time. I saw him and was humbled to even think I was playin the same Instrument. He was unbelievable, I was shocked and never really got over it. To the point of tears, almost. I started to really practice and take the drum set seriously. I remember walking home that night thinking I was a joke of a drummer and I was just in the presence of Drum God. His command of the set, made it seem as if the drums themselves were afraid of not sounding and reacting right, for him. I was not worthy, Elvin was!

I have gotten to see Elvin over 20 times and even spent some time with him....insane laugh. Elvin told me his all time favorite band with Muddy waters with Little walter Spann Jimmie rogers and Elgin Evans and that he'd loved to have played in that band...that would have been insane.
I am not convinced that Elvin is the model of that tune though.. we need a link to that interview asap! |
