Richard Branson To Make Exile On Main Street Movie

Entrepreneur Richard Branson has acquired the rights to the book ‘Exile On Main Street: A Season In Hell With The Rolling Stones’ and will adapt the story for the big screen.


The Robert Greenfield book, first published in 2006, deals with the turbulent relationship between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards during the recording on the classic 1972 Stones album in France.’

The story begins in April 1971 when the Rolling Stones became tax exiles and left England to live in France. Richards leased the mansion Villa NellCôte on the Côte d’Azur. It became headquarters for the recording of the album.

Villa NellCôte was a 16-room house built in 1850 and used as Gestapo headquarters during World War II.

It was a crazy time for the Stones. Keith Richards and his girlfriend were heroin addicts, guests such as William S. Burroughs and Gram Parsons would casually drop by and Mick Jagger met and married Bianca Perez-Mora Macias that same year.

The screen play is currently being written by Brandon and Philip Murphy. The last script ‘The Last Drop’ was recently picked up for production by Mandate Pictures.

COOL~ I wonder who they are going to get for actors! Ashton Kutcher would make a nice young MICK, and for KEEF, they can get Johnny Depp, the KEEF wanna-be! For Marianne and Anita they can get 2 blond bombshells, no shortage of them in the movie bizz! I think it will be great!

could be very cool, if done right... need a killer director, doesn't matter who is acting... casting will come second!

I don't know about this guys. You know up front that it'll fail to  live up to the expectations of Stones fans who simply read, listened, talked and speculated so much and so long about this era. Even if it's good. So that makes me hesitant instead of happy.

The only biopics I liked were the ones about people I'm only casually interested in. Others - Nixon, The Doors, Walk The Line - were certainly not bad films yet they annoyed me big time. So I'm not saying this shouldn't happen, but it'll be nicer for the people who just know the warhorses.

I enjoyed STONED although it was mostly inaccurate. There was enough sex and drugs and rock and roll to keep it interesting.

AGREED...I know friends who enjoyed it who weren't/aren't Stones fans...at least not like the bunch in this asylum...

Don't know about the Rock & Roll part, The Stones didn't allow any of their music in that one, in fact they used songs that were written by other people (like Little Red Rooster) I guess The Stones didn't endorse it at all.

I don't know. This sounds like a bad idea.  It could go wrong in a hundred different ways.  The worst being a making of Exile movie that the Stones do not allow the music to be used for.
