Title: Stones in Canada, 1965 Post by Edith Grove on Apr 25th, 2012 at 7:49pm
By David Ball
Having already conquered most of Europe, Australia and New Zealand earlier in the year, The Rolling Stones kicked off their landmark first North American tour with a sold-out concert at Maurice Richard Arena in Montreal on April 23, 1965. The highly anticipated tour was supported by their 1965 American studio album, The Rolling Stones, Now!, and highlighted by one of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards’ early compositions, the Top 20 hit “Heart of Stone.” Not surprisingly, each night’s set list relied heavily on the band’s early era blues and R&B influences, and the short-but-sweet 10-song Montreal show was no exception: two originals – “Off the Hook” and “The Last Time” – placed nicely among eight covers, including the Solomon Burke opener “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love,” Chuck Berry’s “Carol,” Howlin’ Wolf’s “Little Red Rooster” and set closer Bo Diddley’s “I’m Aright.” Unfortunately, given the madness surrounding the British Invasion, incessant screaming from hormonal girl-fans marred most of the recordings. Brian Jones, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger with fans in Montreal in April of 1965. After their quick visit to La Belle Province, the burgeoning rock superstars played three Ontario gigs in three straight days beginning on April 24 at the nation’s capital, followed by a stop in Toronto the following evening and a final stop in London before crossing the border on April 29 to play two shows in Albany, N.Y. In total, Jagger, Richards, Brian Jones, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts performed 24 concerts in 21 days, ending their gruelling schedule with a threefer on May 29 at New York City’s Academy of Music. Note: The Rolling Stones’ second American tour also began in Montreal, on October 10, 1965. http://canadianmusichalloffame.ca/this-week-in-history-april-23-to-29/ |

I was 12 then and only an hour from Toronto and London Ontario. No one would take me and it was too far to "run away" to.....I freaked not being there and remember the excitement surrounding the shows on local radio...such as it was back then.....1969 they did not tour Canada....but 1972!!!!!!!!!...it all was in my control!!!!!..camped outside for 3 cold days in streets of Toronto on acid to get tickets to the 2 Toronto shows!..was my senior year in high school and I scored 10 tickets for each show.......Was King for weeks!!!!!!!!!...lol......the tickets were $7.50 each which was crazy back then..(saw Zep for $4.00 which people bitched about)...lol......great times.

I remember seeing this pic for the first time a number of years ago on the BJ fan club web site. I love it! So neat to see just "regular" people getting the chance to pose with our rock icons.

Hey, great story, gimmekeef! It's amazing how ticket prices have changed...imagine seeing the Stones or the Beatles or Yardbirds, etc. for under $10! Those really early shows were rarely more than $3.50 or so....7 weeks worth of allowance for me! LOL ;) :P

LOL..I forgot about my sister in all this.....she was one of the school "hot chicks".....2 years younger than me and blew off the ticket I gave her in the 30th row as she scored a front row seat for the afternoon show in 72 on July 15th. Bill Wyman passed a bottle of wine down to her group and I guy I know still has the bottle. My parents actually tried to force her to let me have the front row seat but I said no.....she wouldnt have listened anyway!..we laugh to this day about all that |
