Which is your favorite Stones lineup/era and why?

I'm confused, live or studio, and is Ian Stewart or Mac too... line-ups changed on albums and tours... not to split hairs, but how does boby Keys not make the grade or current piano player Chuck? too many variables for me...

It's just Ian was a founding member and the band always considered him a "member" despite not officially being an "official member." I suppose this is studio. I mean there are tons of sideplayers, I suppose you could list your own lineup which you liked with the sidemen. I just always considered Ian to be more than just a sideman. |

I agree he was a founding member... he didn't play on Beggars, or tour with the band from 1970 to 1973... and he wasn't the only piano player on albums during these years as well... I'm just saying... Jack Nitzsche, Nicky Hopkins, Billy Preston, and Ian McLagan all played on albums as well as tours... so it is just hard for me to put him as the only one in the line up, without considering these other players who were also playing piano and keyboards!

Changed it to just the core lineups to make it more clear. No Ian or anybody else. |

Without a doubt I'm a fan of the Brian & Mick T. era, it goes with my age of course, 58, & I personality think the Stones did their best work during these times, all I have to do is look at the albums that were made, I like "Some Girls" but it doesn't compare with "Let It Bleed/Exile/Sticky Fingers" & all those great albums that were made with Brian in the 60's, even though a lot of them were covers of Blues they still stand out.

Of course I vote for 1963 - 1969. Better 1963 - 1967.
But I'm one of those here who saw them in the mid 60ies. Who out of you giving your vote here has seen them live and in person back then too? |

@philgood: not me, but being born in '73 I didn't see them with the MT-lineup either and that era is still my favorite.

The albums that they had done in the '60s until Exile are the best they had done.
I might arrived till Miss you.. but it wasnt so great as the others. .. well after Brian's loss, I prefer the two micks and charlie, keith, Bill.. he seems to me as a peanut.. but anyway ok. And naturally the other 'members' Nicki, Stu.. ' but R. Cooder not so much, in stufio. |

And to think that Daryl Jones is the hired help, he's not even one of The Stones, I'm really surprised by this poll, 53? I got a feeling all the people who voted were born in the 80's. |

Part of the 26% here!
Cause of my LOVE for Sticky Fingers and Exhile I think I could live with those 2 alone on the Island If I had too! But I do Love the Really Early Stuff and I like the Bang Disc! Tough Question But I'm a Mick Taylor fan :smilemick.......................... Sorry Ronnie :aimama But nothing beats............ Pulse :areyoufuckingserious Texture :boring and Flavor :smilestu |

Well, you know me.... ;) I voted for the Brian era because I think it was the most exciting and musically diverse time they had. That would be followed by the Mick Taylor era. I'm an old timer... ;)

Well if I am forced to choose, I went with the Mick T era only because it produced my personal favorite album and song, Bitch on Sticky Fingers. I have probably listened to that album over a thousand times. I just love it from start to finish. But I actually love the Brian era most for creativity. And I like the Bill era for laying down a solid rhythm, and the Ronnie era for extra excitement. I'll go with the MICK, KEEF & CHARLIE era ~ it's ALL good!

Well ABB may not have been the RS's finest tour, but it was a very lengthy tour, spanning 2 US legs, South America, Asia, Europe, they were everywhere on that tour! I met so many cool people from all over the planet, including a bunch of Rocks Off people. ABB was the most fun tour!

Mick/Keith/Brian/Bill/Charlie (1963-1969)
The lineup which invented it all Mick/Keith/Mick T./Bill/Charlie (1969-1974) Took a good thing & made it bettah Mick/Keith/Ronnie/Bill/Charlie (1975-1993) Without Ronnie, we have no Stones from '75 onward Mick/Keith/Ronnie/Darryl/Charlie (1994-present) Flashes of greatness in studio, consistent live act Winnah-Mick/Keith/Ronnie/Bill/Charlie (1975-1993) For maintaining the legacy. |
