Title: Gambling References in Stones songs Post by sweetcharmedlife on Mar 10th, 2012 at 10:42pm
Been thinking about this one for a while. Not sure why, other than I'm a degenerate gambler myself. But let's see.We have Casino Boogie,Tumbling Dice. From Hand of Fate "My luck of is up,my chips are down".As well the Kentucky Derby reference in Dead Flowers as well. Any others? Why all the gambling references? Who's the big gambler in the band? It's funny I remember seeing a picture of Mick,Keith and Charlie from the early days at some casino. Interesting pic, because you don't see a lot of pictures with just those three.

ok I'll bite. Interesting topic, lets name them all.
from Tumbling Dice: 'Cause all you women is low down gamblers, Cheatin' like I don't know how, Is he is talking about cheating in more than just gambling? So ALL women are cheaters, and they do it better than you? I dont think so MICK! Honey, got no money, He's obviously losing. I'm all sixes and sevens and nines. I believe he is talking about BlackJack here, you want the high cards and typically you lose with lower numbers. Oh, my, my, my, I'm the lone crap shooter, Playin' the field every night. I know this is CRAPS, and if you bet the field, its a sucker bet and you typically lose. Don't you know you know the duece is still wild. This has got to be Poker, dueces are 2's and they can be wild. Baby, I can't stay, you got to roll me Back to the Craps table again! from ROCK IN A HARD PLACE We're in the same boat On the same sea And we're sailing south On the same breeze Guiding dream churches With silver spires And our rogue children Are playing loaded dice Loaded dice are dice that are 'fixed' to land a certain way, its a comment on religion and social norms that assume all of us should be of the same mindset as older generations. But the younger generation is going rogue, not holding to the same values as thier parents. Deep shit! from STEALING MY HEART My cards are on the table, you can look up my sleeves You say you're honest but love is for thieves This is comparing his heart to a card game, there are no hidden tricks but love is for thieves ia an interesting comment ~ do you have to steal someone elses heart, or should it be given? If you have to steal it, it aint worth taking! HANG FIRE Take a thousand dollars go have some fun Put it all on at a hundred to one Hang fire, hang fire, put it on the wire I've always thought this line was about horse racing, sometimes the odds can be 100-1 or 99-1 but its a crazy bet! |

BITCH...it could refer to just about any sport...there are betting parlors all over the UK...
which, I believe, the actual reference is to...making the quick quid during the repressed/recession of the 70's in the UK...24/7 instead of hustling and getting/finding a job "marring for money, is a full time job...don't need the aggravation..." If you are a FAWLTY TOWERS fan...you will recall Basil always sending out Polly or Manuel out with a fiver to place a bet for him. |
